HAHA but it's true. I just don't get why Sawyer went to sun before asking jack who is an actual doctor, but Sun still rules!!! How many different medicines in that jungle are there? And wasn't that the same leaf she used for shannon when she had the sathma attack?!
But anyway Sun's new nickname is medicine woman, or not. It actually sounds dorky, but who cares. Does anyone have a cool nickname for Sun

I think Sawyer probably went to Sun first, before Jack, because 1) He didn't want to have to ask Jack a favor and 2) He didn't want to feel like he owed Jack. Sun the Medicine Woman...it has a ring to it... ;D (Sorry, I don't have any good nicknames!)

There's a great connection between Jack as the representative of "modern" medicine and Sun as the representative of "ancient" wisdom. Or, Western vs. Eastern medicine. She was a very effective trauma nurse during the whole incident with Boone. Makes you wonder what else she studied while Jin was off being Mr. Bad-*** Businessman?

I think Sun offers a nice alternative to Jack on the island...not necessarily as effective for serious injury but to help the survivors deal with everyday problems..

And btw I think it's obvious that Sawyer went to Sun because the LAST thing he'd want to do is ask Jack for help. Kate had to practically drag him there even after Jack offered to help him earlier.

I never had the chance to see Sun's flashback episode "House of the rising Sun", so I don't know if it addressed why and how she knows so much about Herbs, plants, and alternative medicine. What was her original profession before the came to the Island? Botanist? East Asian Alternative Therapist?
Or did they just gave her that skill for her to do something on the Island?

They didn't address it in her flashback...but it doesn't seem that far-fetched to me. She is a very well bred woman from an Asian culture...and it was probably something she learned in her studies...

Hmm....I don't know about that.
I myself know many a " very well bred women from an Asian culture ", and It seems that they would be in DEEP trouble if they were stuck on a desert Island - only plants they know are flowers and the the vegetables in food. :D
After all, Why in the world would they need to know how to grow plants, or what kind of plants are for medicinal purposes. They are RICH!! :D
Unless Sun specifically studied her plant knowledge in a school in Korea, your theory is pretty far fetched, I'm afraid....
Anyway, It would have make FAR more sense that Jin would have this "Asian Botanic" knowledge, since he was a poor country boy after all... :)

I have this wild idea that Sun served as her father's goon doctor. Because of the shady activities her father is involved in, her father's goons can't go to the hospital when they're injured. Boone is no big because Sun's faced death before. It's not her place to question her father, but she is probably suspicious of the injuries the goons come in with. She concludes that her father is up to no good. This is why Sun is wary of Jin joining the family business.

Off topic....

Isn't it funny that Jin thinks the woman he loves needs protecting because she's a "sheltered" rich kid? Also, isn't it funny that Sun has skills that would compliment his ambition? No, not to rise to chief executive of finger breaking.

Didn't Jin say he wanted to open a restaurant? Sun can garden. And didn't she cook a meal for him, which he totally didn't expect?

Didn't Jin say he wanted to open a hotel? Sun knows medicine and herbal remedies. She could either be the hotel doctor or organize its spa.

I think Sun was serious about eloping to America. She would give up her lifestyle for Jin. She would support his restaurant venture and be involved in management. Hell, she would probably get a job to get bootstrap money to make it happen.

Jin you fool. You had it all and threw it all away! Looks like death for Jin in the season finale.

I can't help but wonder why Sun knows so much about tropical plants anyways...she grew up the daughter of a wealth man...I doubt she ever had to live off the land...I'm wondering if the writers have fallen into an asian stereotype trap...how much time could Sun have possibly spent in tropical jungles? where did all of this botanical knowledge come from...unless she studied holistic medicine, I just don't get it...

Exactly what I was saying!
This past weekend, I was eating with some friends at a Chinese restaurant in Flushing , Queens. One of my friends is a well-to-do Korean woman, who happens to be a big fan of the show. ( She is in love with Daniel Dae Kim! ). I asked her about if it was realistic how could Sun know so much about tropical plants if she lives in temporate Korea. She told me that it could happen, but it is just too convenient, the writers could have done something else to explain why she knew this knowledge. She told me that if Sun wasn't supposed to be a a rich woman, she would probably believe the scenario. She herself and her other Korean female friends do not know all the natural plant information that Sun does on the show... ::)
She told me that it was probably a plot device that the writers needed, like Micheal suddenly knowing ship building and nautical knowledge ! :)

If she didd't study it in school it was probably a hobby. There are many people here, myself included, who dabble in herbs and natural healing remedies. For myself the herbs are mostly used for cooking but it wouldn't be that hard for me to figure out what* plant is good for what ailment if I wanted. If she was very very interested in plants she might be familar with things grown around the world including tropical islands but that would make her an almost 'geeky' plant lover although I suppose its possible.

The late Emperor of Japan didn't 'need' to know about plant life but he had a great interest in it...he was in fact and amateur botanist becuase he was personlly interested in it. When he wasn't busy with matters of state he was looking through a microscope at something... ;)
