I re-watched the whole 3-parter (aka season 3 finale) today and wow... I think I'm loving it more each time I see it!!!
I went to our old discussion thread and to my surprise the only reaction (by me) I found there, was this:
I am - speechless... and in awe...
:ntworthy: :ntworthy: :ntworthy: :ntworthy: :ntworthy: :ntworthy:
Okay, no BIG surprise because this WAS my regular reaction to pretty much every episode in season 3 but I was surprised that it was my ONLY reaction to the WHOLE 3-part finale!! :eek2:
And it surprised me even more to find so few reactions from the rest of you (the thread quickly turned into a discussion about a certain Prince concert... :nono: )
So - this since is BIG POST day for me... obvisously - I'll try to come up with some more coherent thoughts.
When I thought about rewatching the episodes, I thought about skipping Utopia because I wasn't in the mood for the "Future Kind" and Professor Yana (the Master is so much more fun ;) ) but then I remembered all the Jack/ Doctor interaction
The Doctor: Stop it!
Captain Jack Harkness: Can't I say hello to anyone?
and especially this brilliant scene with Jack in the radiation room and the Doctor behind the door where they finally talk about what has happened, both brilliantly written AND acted out by David Tennant and John Barrowman.
So in the end I knew, I couldn't skip Utopia and re-watched it (again ;) ).
And really, those are my favorite parts of the episode, plus the Master/ Doctor interaction at the end of the episode
The Master: Use my name. (monger :71:)
The Doctor: Master...
and just overall David Tennant's acting that is so brilliant and spot on in this episode... so many great lines, just brilliantly delivered:
The Doctor: I'm a bit of a hermit really.
The Professor: A hermit with friends?
The Doctor: Mmm. Hermits United. We get together every 10 years and swap stories about caves. It's good fun.
Or when he tells Marfa that they need to leave... that they really really should go and then his facial expression turns from concerned-serious to beaming with glee within a split second. :24: (Are there any animated icons from that scene out there, btw? I so need one!!! :71:)
Okay, so overall, this episode had to tie some lose ends (what happened to Jack after Parting of the Ways and before Torchwood), it had to set the scene for the finale, introduce the new villain(s) and connected former - seemingly stand-alone episodes (Family of Blood/Human Nature) and story elements (Face of Boe) - with the finale to one big story arc. That's one helluva job to do that and I'm sure many TV shows would pretty much fail to do that balancing act but I think Doctor Who accomplished it brilliantly. (especially after seeing the rest of the season... I remember that at first sight the Future Kind seemed to be a bit of a filler in the episode)
