Liplocked 09-04-2008, 04:37 AM Very interesting find, myanmar.
I thought I'd run a search on Natja Igney: http://www.bizjournals.com/tampabay/stories/2007/11/19/story1.html
But I hear Black Swan and think, Claire: she had black hair when she met probable architect of some scheme or other, Christian, in Australia - native home to black swans - and she appears to be 'on the inside' now.
Of what, I'm not sure.
myanmar 09-04-2008, 11:58 AM ooh.....i like that idea about claire!
the odyessy .... seems to be a bit far fetched....seems to be a real company (tho not maybe an ethical one....) and it seems to be in the wrong oceans to have any relevance to lost, but interesting just the same...
coincedence or ?
hehehehehe

Well, you are certainly on the right track about the Black Swan. However, the Black Swan Theory refers to a large-impact, hard-to-predict, and rare event beyond the realm of normal expectations. Please refer to Wikipedia under Black Swan Theory. When and if you do choose to read it please note the names mentioned. Also check out the catagory "See Also" and read about Quasi-empiricism in mathematics, etc.

However, who knows where this game is headed. How cool would it be if the winners of the game were to get their share of the Booty from the Black Swan. Who says that the "Black Swan" couldn't be written into the show. There's the Black Rock, time travel and other mysteries that could easily be woven together into the recent "discovery" of the Black Swan. I think to to assume that the Black Swan only refers to one thing would be a mistake.

Yes think outside the box!
Another nice little association that I found (well, I haven't seen it posted anywhere) was that "The Legend of the Black Swan" is a story in DC comics House of Mystery #48 (1957). It was also re-printed in Ghosts #6 in the 70's.
(On the bottom right of the front cover)

I've had a look round the web but I couldn't find a copy of the actual story however, but I think it's probably to do with ghost ships...but if anyone out there has it????!!!
Anyway, I liked the comic link, I think Jack Kirby did the front cover of this issue of HofM...er...no, whoops, it was Bill Ely
waywardwanderer 09-05-2008, 10:11 PM Well, well. Hume, Mill, Bentham... look at all the names associated with the Black Swan theory. Goodness, those writers certainly do their research.
ETA: Huh. The cover of the book is the origami swan. AND the right side up and upside down swan are images in the newest video on DWY. IIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiinnnteresting.
BlackLotus 09-06-2008, 10:45 AM im a bit obsessed with a possible pirate link to the Others at the moment - we've been talking about it over at the queST. (http://forum.thefuselage.com/showthread.php?t=102168)

RAD24 09-06-2008, 02:46 PM Also, about the "Black Swan" book by Taleb, there is a link in that wikipedia page for the book that leads to Ludic fallacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludic_fallacy), which mentions "the misuse of games to model real-life situations"...something to do with this Dharma "game"?
NBC001 09-07-2008, 02:01 AM Found this while searching for something on the Black Swan. It is a whole blog some of it is translated into English and some of it is Portugese. It is a story that someone has been writing for over two years. He does have a link to Lost on the page. I checked the source but not that sure what else to look for besides the usual maybe someone else can find something.
I put a spoiler tag on it because it is pretty long. It's probably just a coincidence.

The Black Swan: Myth or Reality?
The tradition said that whenever there was a royal birth the festivities would last five days. And for the record, the Black Swan wasn’t from the royalty; she descended from the common people. Her birth shouldn’t be so extraordinary to be celebrated during five long and cheerful days. But how everyone, even now, knows her as one of the Greatest Princesses of the north’s breed and no one knows her real name? Was she favored by the Gods even if she was born in the weak state of the Great Crystal? All the births in Atlantis are controlled to occur during daylight don’t ask me why. Many facts are vague, imprecise, some of them are lost.
It’s known that in a remote time, there were two kingdoms coexisting in Atlantis. The Rinkinens were the one of the north, and the one of the south were the Margrietus. There still was an independent religious tribe, the Crystal People who protected the Great Crystal, the Sun of that hidden land.
Presently there is only one united kingdom, and that restrict group of high-priests. They live in the Temple of Light near the Pyramid of the Great Crystal. Only they have the keys to the secrets of Atlantis. They are the ones who guard all the doors, all the locks, all the books, all the testimonials written about the History of this land.
There is a collection of ancient books named The Lost Keys. Very few have access to its confidential information, only the Pontiff Mar-Hir and his five closest priests have that privilege. Even the Kings don’t have any kind of permission to take a look. Some more curious have used the force and tried to steal them but each and every one of them have failed. We’re talking about a restrained group of priests who knows different arts of magic. They can do things that no one dreamed of.
Now, the Pontiff Mar-Hir will tell us one of those stories. He chose the ancient language of the Rinkinens to enlighten us about the mystery of the Black Swan, a nickname that endures until now. She was the one who unified all the habitants in one kingdom yet no one knows her real name. And her name was…

RAD24 09-07-2008, 11:43 AM That is interesting, what "Black Swan" and "Great Princess" is he talking about?
NBC001 09-07-2008, 12:08 PM I'm not sure because as I said some of it is in English and aome of it is in Potugese and I don't speak Potugese. If you use a translator it is hard to understand. There are other stories on the sight so you have to figure out which one is the next chapter, I still haven't found her name.
RAD24 09-07-2008, 03:05 PM It also mentions atlantis... hav the lost producers discredited this theory yet?

I know! I saw that, too. I snickered and it makes me wonder if the conclusion of the game is going to be that Dharma fails miserably, because their tests let people througth who will end up destroying it. (*ahemUSahem*) Hehe. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a clue or a name or something with Ludic in it before things are all said and done.

Sounded like a ship to me as well, but is too similar to Black Rock, I would think -- then again, so is Black Lotus!
- Black Berry
(PS: I have a complete reprint run of EC's "Piracy" comics from the 50s -- I may look to see if there's a Black Swan... or Black Rock, or Black Lotus... story in there!)
DearDairy 09-09-2008, 11:42 PM It also mentions atlantis... hav the lost producers discredited this theory yet?
I was thinking this also, but thought I'd be mocked with hails of derisive laughter!
My main reason for thinking this is the use of the names of Greek giants as group names in the game. I'm reminded of Ol' Four Toes, and wondering if part of the purpose of the game is to hint that the coming season will provide some answers about the statue.
Atlantis may be well-known, but that wouldn't necessarily rule it out as a possibe solution to the Lost mystery. After all, what's more LOST than Atlantis?
Atlantis isn't a lost continent, the ancients just moved it!
Rosalind12 09-10-2008, 11:16 AM So is Black Swan Mittelwerk, or is Black Swan giving us a warning of Mittelwerk's involvement in all this somehow? This is getting interesting! :)
golf_fan 09-10-2008, 05:38 PM Ahh, to throw another twist on it, what if the "Black Swan" ends up being that the new Dharma, not an acronym, is being assembled by Hans to overthrow, prevent, or undo anything Mittlewerk has done with the Spider Protocol tests. Thus, Rucusguy, Daniel, whatever, would be a proponent for Mittlewerk! He'd end up being a hack against the new Dharma, but an anti-RB at the same time!
Thus, we'd have played in two ARGs and end up being on both sides of the fight, but won't know unti the end. I think I want to be on Richard's team
Probably not though ;)
Rosalind12 09-10-2008, 05:42 PM oooooh.....my brain is melting.....
golf_fan 09-10-2008, 05:54 PM oooooh.....my brain is melting.....
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. Don't forget that Mittlewerk is the new Hanso Foundation. Maybe, just maybe there was a huge falling out between the Hanso Foundation and DHARMA (The DeGroots) that we haven't seen yet. That would make (my theoretical) fight an extension of a past we know nothing about. Dundundun!
Sam G 09-10-2008, 08:46 PM At the end of the LE Mittlewerk was on the run, wasn't he?
September 26th
With Mittelwerk now a wanted fugitive, Alvar Hanso was freed and reinstated as head of the Hanso Foundation. On thehansofoundation.org website, Hanso thanked Rachel for all her efforts. However, clicking the word “humanity” revealed a secret message from Mittelwerk.
“You've taken the battle, but that's all it was, a battle. Humanity needs me, now more than ever. I have the virus, I have the will, and I will not fail.”
So you're saying Mittelwerk has come out of hiding and has infiltrated a dead Dharma?
golf_fan 09-10-2008, 10:04 PM At the end of the LE Mittlewerk was on the run, wasn't he?
So you're saying Mittelwerk has come out of hiding and has infiltrated a dead Dharma?
Well, at the end of the LE, wasn't the year 2004? And, are we to believe and assume that the show and this ARG have moved into 2007 or 2008? (Correct me if I am wrong)Perhaps, if so, Mittlewerk has come out of hiding.
But, I may be able to blow my own theory. We presume that the vid cut-ins are placed by Black Swan, who we also assume is Rucusguy. Well, would Rucusguy give us his boss' name in a hack blip? If so, why?
So, I don't think Rucusguy can work for Mittlewerk.
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. :)
waywardwanderer 09-11-2008, 12:05 AM Hans Van Eeghen = Mittlewerk?
That's what I'm going with. The man IS a wanted fugitive after all. The man knows some of the best doctors in the country, right? I'm sure he could find an excellent plastic surgeon.
