Here is a theory about the number 44. I believe it was meant to represent the number of survivors left on the island. This is why. There were 48 survivors of the crash. If you eliminate the people that have died since which are:

1) Marshall - The man transporting Kate
2) Joanna - Drown
3) Scott - Shot and killed by Etahn
4) Boone - Crushed by plane

There are 44 left.

Baby born=45.

Baby born=45.


SO someone else needs to die to get the number down to 44 by the end of the season. Maybe two, if Danielle joins their group. And 17 more need to die to get the number down to 23 by the end of season 2.

The creator of the show claimed he was inspired by Survivor. Doesn't everyone get thrown off Survivor Island until only one is left ? Does this mean that everyone minus 4 will get killed off by the end of season 6 ?

Why can't they kill off more regulars ? They have 30 nameless faceless people walking around in the background, each with a backstory to be told. They could kill off 6 regulars and promote 6 backgrounders to "main cast" for next season !!

It would be 44 survivors left because the baby was not counted as one of the original 48 survivors. If the baby was not counted as a plane crash survivor right after the crash, it would not be counted as a plane crash survivor just from being born. There are now 44 people left from the 48 originally counted.

Actually, the baby [i][is/i] a survivor, too. He was on the plane and I doubt you would find even the stanchest pro-choice person who would argue that an 8 month old fetus isn't a person in their own right. I stick by my count, 45 survivors.

What about "Sucked Into Jet Engine Guy?" Does he count? He was a survivor (for a minute or 2 ;)). If so, then 48 - 5 + 1 = 44.

I think that the use of the number 44 shows that somebody was a baseball fan (Reggie Jackson and/or Hank Aaron).

TV Guide said that they were told there was no connection between baseball and the numbers. I will assume they are telling the truth.

Two things - the pilot was also alive briefly post crash and was sucked up into the trees by the unseen monster, and Ethan...as I recall quite a few viewers felt sure that he was still breathing in that body bag. So we're not really 100% sure that he's dead.

I don't understand how 44 is a "magical" number. It's not part of the 4 8 15 16 23 42 numbers. I know it's on Sarah's shirt but why does that make it a special number?
