Hurley this time surrenders to the cops after Ben tries to talk him into trusting him and going back to the island. He remembers Sayid's warning to do the opposite of whatever Ben asks him to do.

He sure seems to feel there's safety in the lockup, for he jumped at the chance to go to Santa Rosa in last year's premiere when Charlie was disturbing him.

I loved when Hurley did that. And Ben's face was priceless and so was Hurley's. Sometimes you have to choose between the lesser of two evils and I would rather see prison or the nut house then follow Ben with what Hurley knew.

I am rewatching the episodes again. Just watched the part where Anna Lucia pulls Hurley over. Remember what she said. Don't get yourself arrested!!!!!!! Ultimately that is exactly what Hurley does. Bad Hurley.

Bad Hurley? Yeah, maybe... We'll see. In any case, I was going to point that out as well... he may have remembered Sayid but he forgot about what Ana Lucia said to him.

Yes, bad Hurley. It really puts a wrench in the works for everyone. Getting Hurley out of jail is going to be pretty tough.

Exactly. Clearly the island has some plan as well. It didn't want Hurley to get arrested. After watching these two episodes, I can't wait for the larger picture to pan out. Is Ben doing everything for his own self interests or not. Same for Widmore. And what is the island's plan for everyone.

Didn't one of the officers look like Abaddon? If it was the then Hurley isn't going to jail.

I don't think that Ben ever talked to Sayid or Jack. If Ben had really talked to Sayid don't you think Sayid would have warned Ben of what he had told Huley, "If you should ever happen to run into Ben then do the exact opposite of what he tells you to do." If Ben knew Sayid had said that to Hurley don't you think A. Ben would have mentioned it to Hurley so that Hurley would listen to him (Ben)? or B. Ben would have told Hurley to turn himself into the police so that Hurley would do the exact opposite and go with him, (Ben)?

No it wasn't Abbadon. Ben didn't talk to Sayid but he did talk to Jack. They show Jack talking to ben on the phone when he tells him he has Sayid.

Ben talked to Jack not Sayid. Sayid was stll unconscious at that point.

I think Ben really miscalculated Hurley's reaction to him. Like someone said, Sayid told him to do the opposite of what Ben said and so he did. I have a feeling though that he won't be in jail long.

yeah it seems Jack has turned over to Locke's side - where reason and science dont matter - Hurley will always been on the side of reason and moral - even though its apparent that he is very special. He shouldn't have turned himself in, but its obvious as a plot point that will be appararent in the next couple weeks im sure.

But what choice did he have in that moment, it was a tough one!

Yes, but how can it want Hurley to follow Ben? I am confused by this, there seems to be a conflict. Ben is clearly evil & dishonest, yet he is doing the island's bidding, so seemingly good. Yet, at the same time, all the humans (alive or ghosts) are indicating that no one is to trust him. But don't they have to- to a degree- to all reach their ends, to get back to the island? Is that what it is? Everyone trusting Ben to the extent that they can get back to the island yet hold enough back not to get taken in by his 'mind games', LOL? I think given that alternative, Hurley made the wiser choice by far, poor guy!

ben is smart and probably figured out that hurly, having been with sayid, wouldn't follow orders. so, he wanted hurly to turn himself in so that he is cuffed and can be taken back to the island whether he wants to or not. remember all the reverse psychology he and locke pulled on hurly right before they moved the island?

^^

I agree with the above poster, i was going to say that. If Sayid works for Ben but told Hurley to not trust Ben, it could have been Sayid manipulating Hurley to do exactly what been wanted to. Maybe Ben wanted Hurley to get arrested. Notice Ben just stood outside while Hurley was getting arrested you'd think the Cops would also atleast detain the man running out of the house behind the murder suspect but Ben makes no quick movement like 'Crap I gotta get out of here now the police are here' so that could have been set up. Hurley would obviously be the hardest to convince to go back besides maybe Jack but thats been taken care of. IDK, im just really happy i get to be confused and start thinking again!

Look at it from Hurley's point of view. It was the Others' rescue of Ben that got Libby killed. Ben has brought nothing but a world of hurt to Hurley.

I can't decide whether Ben's seemingly heartfelt appeal to Hurley was genuine or manipulative. Ben has a track record for miscalculating Losties' reactions to his mental games - the only person he truly has had wrapped around his finger is Locke. (I'm hoping Jack is not going to supplicate himself to Ben much longer once he gets clean.)
But it seems like Ben would rather have Hurley out of jail than in, so maybe he was really trying to convince him. Either way, Hurley ran scared.

Wait a minute
when did Ben talk to Jack on the phone? I totally missed that. I thought Ben was lying.

Jack called Ben as he pulled into the hospital parking lot with Sayid.

I'm sure Hurley was totally freaked out by Ben's visit. After all, how did Ben know Hurley was at his mother's house? As far as he was concerned, Hurley was still at Santa Rosa. Not to mention that Sayid told Hurley to do the exact opposite of what Ben told him to do. I'm sure Hurley's mind must have been spinning and over-reacted by getting arrested.

Poor Hurley. He's been through a lot in 3 years off the island.
