View Full Version : String or Street

In Daniels analysis of time, I'm pretty sure he say's time is
like a street. Someone please listen to this again. It's driving
me crazy. String does make sense (sort of) since there is
an actual string theory about time, but I'm not sure it's the
same definition as this. Real string theory is the belief that there
are 11 dimensions in time and space.

Most of the posts are saying string, but I swear it's a long "e" sound.
Stream or street. Probably not crucial in the long run, but just trying to
clarify what is being said.

Ehh, whatever.

I heard "street", I've read CC said street too.

Travelling up and down a string is odd, a street, less so.

String

I've watched the episode twice and it sounds like street to me. That makes more sense.

CC could be right... I swear I just watched right now. I kept rewinding.
It's definitely a long "e" sound...

First time around I thought he said stream, now I'm hearing street.

I also heard "street"

its string, not street. his analogy would not make sense using the word street. only a string would because you can only go forwards and backwards on a string as he says.

It sounds like "street" but "string" makes 4815162342 times more sense.

I heard "stream." Time to watch again, I guess...or ask someone who watched it with CC on.

EDIT: well now I'm really confused, because the first time he says it, it could be either "string" or "stream," but then he very clearly says "street" twice more within a few seconds.

I mentioned this in another thread this morning, but I most certainly heard 'street'

Daniel is trying to explain this to Sawyer - so his analogy would have to make sense to Sawyer. String would not make sense to Sawyer.

I heard "street" - and this analogy would make sense to Sawyer.

I heard "String", seems like that would be a word Daniel would use as a physicist, string theory and all. Espcially considering string theory's relation to dimension and spacetime.

The first time Daniel says it, it does sound like string. However, the second and third time he says it, it sounds like street (the third sounds the clearest). That and the fact he is talking about moving forward and in reverse on this thing makes me settle for street. It just makes sense.

I heard string....what is it....like it really matters....lol

Just watched it with the caps on.
It is indeed "street".

I heard street both times I watched it, even though I expected him to say string and, because of that, thought for a split second that was what he said. String would have made more sense since, as others have pointed out, there's a number of string theories that are relevant and he'd be no doubt aware of them. Thing is, they are a little foreign to try and explain and envision, and, as kittenkong80 pointed out, possibly he thought street a better analogy to use.

It does open up some interesting possibilities for time travel though, doesnt it? Can do all kinds of things on a street. Can drive in both directions, in forward or reverse, can do 360's, leave rubber, run stop signs and lights...

I remember hearing both as well, just as you described it, and thinking to myself, "Didn't he say 'string' before? Naaaah..."
I thought string made more sense because Faraday says that "you can't make your own string/street" off of it - you can only go forward and backward along it (I'm paraphrasing, obviously). With a street, you can easily make your own side street - you just run off the side of the street, jump the curb, and drive where ever you want to. With a string, you can't just pull another string out of the existing string (well, not very easily, anyway). I suppose you could tie another string to it to make your own, but that just didn't seem to fit the analogy he was making.
Just my two cents.

Neither street, nor string.
He said STREAM
"Time, it is like a stream. Alright, we can move forward on that stream, we can move in reverse, but we cannot ever create a new stream. If we try to do anything different, we will fail every time. Whatever happened, happened."

Does it make more sense now? To me it does

You can hear him pretty clearly enunciate a "t" sound at the end of the last two times he says it. The first time he says it is more ambiguous and does sound like string, possibly, until you then listen to the next two times he says it.

He said street. The CC says street. You want it to be string because that's what you're familiar with and what your brain anticipated. Quantum Leap Used balled up string. Daniel is saying street.

That's true - and funny. I wanted it to be "string". Watching it again, it does sound like "string" the first time, but the second 2 times, it really sounds like "street".

Yup, this is how I heard it, too.
