Fundamentally,

WHY do they need to go back?

Charlotte spend her whole life trying to get back to the island, & even became an anthropologist to help her find it?
Jack & Ben insist the O6 have to go back.
Locke is going off to bring them back.

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT GOING BACK?? WHY DO IT???

I wonder if the writers even know the answer to that question. I doubt it.

...um because if the O6 don't return then everyone on the island will continue to flash until they all die from their brain freaking out.

I'm sure that it actually goes much deeper than that. (The island flashing people so that Locke will go retrieve them for some greater purpose?) who knows.

While you are figuing out "why" they have to go back, let me know "who" has to return.

The O6 for sure.

But what about Desmond, he was on the island longer than any of them?
And Aaron, he was born there?
Then there is Frank, he was on the island for a while.
Ben. He said he can't go back.
And Sun's Baby?

How does Locke know which ones have to return?
All he was ever told was "all of them must come back."
He seems to be reading a lot between the lines.

I'm guessing when it's said that they "all" have to go back, it's the O6. That begs the question, does that include Jin and Sun's baby?

Jin is already on the island. Sun's baby isn't part of O6, so no. Poor Ji Yeon.

Wow, that's harsh. I'm sure they know the answer. Just because the audience doesn't know YET doedn't mean we will never know. You've seemed rather bitter and angry in a lot of threads lately. I hope you find more enjoyment in the rest of the season.

To the OT, I think it has something to do with some balance needed in the destiny of the island. I'm guessing we will find out soon.

Charlotte, because her mom told her she made the island up in her head, but she knew she didn't.
She remembered leaving her father there. So I understand her over whelming need to get back there.

The rest I don't know why they have to. I know why they should. To get everyone else off.

They were Dharma! That is a twisted way of putting it. But it is the truth. They were all part of Dharma. They helped Dharma with the button pushing concept, escaping the purge, broadcasting the numbers, the incident, etc....

Wow, I hadn't thought of that. This is the only theory that makes sense. They have to go back and time-travel back to the Dharma period because they have "always" been part of Dharma and done whatever it is we haven't seen them do yet. It's part of the "course correction." (Which of course implies that the past CAN be changed--but Mrs. Hawking's original appearance also implied that, despite what she told Desmond.)
