Putting all the magical and mysterious properties of the island aside, maybe there is a game going on between Widmore and Ben. There has been mention of "rules" before. And Desmond is usually right when he is yelling like that. As to the type of game,,,, i dunno, seeing how many lives they can ruin.

Haha, I like that logic.

He usually is. "IT'S ALL BLOODY REAL! WE HAVE TO PUSH THE BUTTON!"

I like this train of thought - kind fits in with all that stuff in season 1, where Locke said - Two sides, one is black, one is white etc etc

Perhaps there has been an age old game going on for generations between 2 sides - one black, and one white. But who is black and who is white....surely its not as black and white as this?

Maybe Richard has been playing this age old game for a long time.

ha. ever since that family guy "stewie kills lois" cliffhanger, i've joked, "that's it! that's lost! stewie's playing a virtual reality game!" :)

Stewie would make a great Ben. "So Jack, you uh, you and your friends going to leave the island? Going to take a little helicopter ride? Gonna go back to the main land and leave Sawyer behind? Think you're going to leave? Ha!" (Stewie shoots Jack point blank in the chest)

It seem there is some sort of life or death game being played, but I do hope it's more than just a game.

When Desmond says "these people are just using us, they're playing some kind of a game, we're just the pieces" it made me think of the book I'm currently reading called "The Eight" by Katherine Neville (I'm only halfway through so far). The book is all about chess and the mysterious Montglane Service that once belonged to Charlemagne. One of the ideas in it is that the pawns are not necessarily there to be sacrificed but rather they could be quite powerful, if used correctly. I think the Losties are the pawns in some greater game being played by Ben and Widmore, or maybe even someone bigger than that. In the book the protagonist also finds a hidden message that says "Just as another game this battle will continue forever". It made me think that maybe in Lost, too, there is some kind of a greater game that's been going on for a long time and will continue for many, many years to come. In the book the characters are fighting for the power hidden within the Montglane Service, and perhaps in Lost they are fighting for some power hidden within the Island.

I know that maybe I'm drawing too many parallels with the book, but I do agree with Desmond when he says that they're all just being used. I wonder what the consequences for the Losties are of one of the sides winning.

I agree, but it's confusing why Ben would be a main player, Widmore i agree

Could be Jacob vs Hanso,
Jacob vs. Ben
Richard Vs. Matthew.
Island vs Jacob.

Who knows, the possibilities are endless.

Maybe its Aaron Vs Ji yeon. And has always been that way. And all else are pawns. Well maybe Ben could be a queen.

It could also be some sort of war, and Ben has in mind some sort of "rules of war."

Hard to think of it as a game, when so many people have been killed, even murdered.

:)

I would prefer life and death struggle rather than two opposing 'teams' just playing a big game. But I agree with the OP, Desmond is usually right when he yells like that.

"Ben. Goa'uld. Thank you." That's one of my favorite Jack O'Neill quotes.

I could see that happening.
