Some have speculated that Eloise Hawkings and Charles Widmore, who were on the island in the 50's together, may be Dan's parents.

Ben's surprise could be because he now has choices: he could kill Widmore's daughter, Penelope, or his son, Dan. Multiple paths to revenge.

Ben certainly didn't know this before and perhaps this information has him reconsidering the motives of Hawking? I've thought since before we even found out that Widmore was funding Dan's research that Danny-boy might be a Hawking-Widmore love-child.

Everyone is supposing that everyone is Widmore's child. I have yet to see any evidence backing Widmore's supposed bloodlines to anyone other than Penelope.

People kept screaming "OMG! Charlotte's a Widmore because that would be crazy!" or "Hawking had to have slept with Widmore because that would be crazy!" Obviously, I'm exaggerating (a little).

Look, while it's still possible, there's nothing to back up any of these suppositions. I could say that, in season six, Sayid metamorphs into a polar bear and flashes back in time and it turns out that he's the bear Sawyer killed. Unlikely? Yes. But there's just as much evidence supporting that as anything else that's getting tossed around.

But wait - you're dissing my favorite theory - Karl is obviously Widmore and Locke's love child! Come on, can't you see!?!

But how do the mechanics (or electro-magnetics for that matter) of that work?

I feel the same, I'm all for looking at and discussing theories, but they has to be a bit of evidence to support them and they do usually give us some clues. Having said that though, I am equally frustrated by the people that refuse to see and acknowledge the clues, wanting it spelling out for them all the time.

Widmore and Hawking were on the island together in the past.
Widmore still knows Hawking's location in the present.
Hawking is Dan Faraday's mom.
Widmore was funding Dan Faraday's research.

There's enough evidence to hint at a deeper behind the scenes connection between these two characters than what has yet been revealed. At least enough to get folks speculating. Besides, I always just assume everybody is sleeping with everybody behind the scenes. It's as good of a base assumption as any.

I like the idea that Eloise & Charles are siblings. Someone brought that up a couple of weeks ago & although there is no "proof", I liked it. It takes some of the "soapiness" out of it.
