Hello everyone! After being around the 'Lage a while i noticed the lack of support for those thespians and theatre-techies or just plain lovers of theatre....thus i have created the S.T.A.G.E. zone which stands for "The Stage and Theatre Addict Group Experiment"....I hope there are other fuse-a-holics out there that will come and celebrate all kinds of theatre...

we can talk about any kind of theatre you want (1) backstage stuff (2) Broadway and shows like Rent, Wicked (3) STAGE actors and actresses like Bernadette Peters or Idina Menzel, etc... anything you want so long as its theatre related.

and as is custom of all 'lage groups i shall start a numbered list....

Theatre addict, you say? Let's see. . . I do up to five shows a year, directed twice, been in 20 shows in the last 8 years, been a lighting designer, sound and light board monkey, built sets, and spend more time at rehearsal than I do at home. Yep, I think I'm a theatre addict.

And tomorrow, I'm going to Wicked! ;D (Backstage, too, maybe.)

Mole, please do report on Harvey Fierstein in Fiddler. Cause that's gonna be interesting. Gone from an obese woman to a Jewish peasant. Verrrry interesting.

HAHA, don't worry i will report!!

is this the first time you'll be seeing Wicked?? B/c if it is, you're seeing a great cast!! Please tell me how Jennifer Laura Thompson (hence referred to as "JLT") is as Glinda!! I want to get tickets to her last show....i went to Idina Menzel's last show when she came out in her red track suit...it was AMAZING... (i've seen the show 6 times, im and addict, thus this group)...

P.S. you get to be #3!!

The White Lady
04-13-2005, 11:43 AM
Good! I"ll be interested to hear what you think.

Yep, never seen Wicked before. I'm really excited! I was hoping for Spamalot, but it's qutie literally impossible to get tickets. I'm glad this is a good cast! I heard Idina Menzel was bloody amazing, so I wasn't quite sure how this one compared. . . V. excited! ;D

TheMole171
04-13-2005, 01:26 PM
yah, I saw Shoshana Bean (current Elphaba) do the role on Jan. 9th (when Idina made her cameo) and she was AMAZING...i hadn't expected much, but she blew me away!!

I have tickets for Spamalot, but not til July but they're in the Mezz, not Orch...I am sooo excited for it, Eric Idle is ridiculously funny and the Holy Grail is one of my favorite movies....

The White Lady
04-13-2005, 03:54 PM
oo, good! ;D

You have. . . Spamalot tickets?

. . .

.
.
.
.
:o :o :o :o :o

*dies of jealousy*

I was hoping to get some because my uncle is a producer, and he can generally get tickets, but alas. . . maybe for this summer, eh? ;D How much were they? Just wondering so I can start saving. . .

I wanted to be. . . a lumberjack! Leaping from tree to tree as they float down the rivers of British Columbia! The giant redwood. . . the larch. . .the fir. . . the mighty Scots pine!

ROFL!!!

Yah, Spamalot tickets are in high demand, they're a good 100 + a piece for orch and like 85 for non-orch...they also have SRO if you wanna go spur of the moment....i think Playbill.com has all the prices on it though....

So is anyone else like to be on stage?

TheMole171
04-13-2005, 10:54 PM
yes...ALL THE TIME!!!

My favorite shows to do are musicals b/c there's so much fun backstage time, but plays are a blast too...what shows have y'all been in?

LostEnchantment
04-13-2005, 11:16 PM
I've been in Rebel Without a Cause, It's a Wonderful Life, and the Beverly Hillbillies. I was also help backstage in Pride and Prejudice. I've never done a musical but I've always wanted to be Christine in the Phantom of the Opera since I was like 2! My parents got me listening to the Phantom of the Opera music since I was about 1 maybe. But I've never seen it (either the movie or the stage production)

I LOVE being backstage! That's so much fun!

What shows have you been in?

TheMole171
04-13-2005, 11:35 PM
HAHA i'm seeing Phantom in 9 days!!! YAY, it will be my 3rd time...ps i secretly want to be Christine too, what did you all think about the movie???

anyways...shows i've been in....i was Chava in Fiddler on the Roof....Chorus/Dixie #3 in Give my Regard to Broadway....Mrs. McAfee in Bye Bye Birdie....Chorus/Dance in Anything Goes....Chorus/Haberdasher in Kiss me Kate....Red (yes i played a guy) in the play Father of the Bride...and Sister Sophia in the Sound of Music....for the first 3 shows i listed, i did a bunch of stage crew stuff too...prop manager, etc....

LostEnchantment
04-14-2005, 07:47 AM
That's awesome! Although the reason why I didn't go see the movie already is because I wanted to see it on stage first.

My sister played a guy too! She was Percy from Beverly Hillbillies. People couldn't tell if she was a guy or girl. She had her hair slicked back and everything. People said she looked like a "not quite so dirty-uped Kurt Koban" which I guess is saying something because I did make up every night too! :lol2:

I'm the only one in my family who has never played a guy.

Which one was your favorite to be in?

The White Lady
04-14-2005, 10:19 AM
Yikes. . . a stage resume?

Let's see. . .
I have:

Directed: The Actor's Nightmare, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Lights: The Compleat Wrks of Willm Shkspr (abridged), Periculum (original show), and same as directed.

Acted:
Ace of Diamonds in Alice in Wonderland
Rachel in How to Eat Like a Child
Ethel in Pirates of Penzance (but not a pirate's daughter :P )
Chorus in Oklahoma
Captain in Anything Goes
Mission Girl/Hot Box Girl in Guys and Dolls
Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street
Madame Summatorother in The Good Doctor
Man 2 in The Visit
James Agnes in DMV Tyrant
Operator #4 in Sorry, Wrong Number
Claudius in Dog's Hamlet
Player in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
Mona in The Mystery of Twicknam Vicarage

annnd yep, I think that's it. I always do a lot of lighting and carpentry backstage as well.

I loove Phantom. But. . . I don't want to be Christine. I'd rather play the Phantom. S'one of my dream roles. ;D So is Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, and the Woman in Black in the eponymous The Woman in Black.

;D

Backstage is so much fun. One of my favourite parts of theater this year was sitting in the booth during Compleat Wrks and having the most random conversations with the guys backstage over headset. goood times.

yah, its probably a good idea to see the stage production first.....thats what i did....

Which one was your favorite to be in?

It a tie between Chava in Fiddler and SIster Sophia in SoM....they both were AMAZING parts to do and there were a TON of really funny rehearsal and backstage moments....

Lights: The Compleat Wrks of Willm Shkspr (abridged)

Which production of that did you do lights for?? I saw the West End version and LOVED IT...DEF one of the funniest shows around...

HAHA yah during my production of Father of the Bride, we had two mishaps during one of the first few performances....one of which involved the guy who was playing the father walking on stage with his fly open....everyone's headsets were buzzing over it and the running crew was asking the lighting crew if the audience could tell....haha it was great....the second mishap involves one of the other actors slamming a door REALLY HARD...it was a great effect, but he slammed it soo hard the flat's supports started to splinter and so the crew was running around with duct tape! trying to fix it....lol, it was great tooo

The White Lady

It was just a school production of Compleat Wrks. I saw The Bible (The Compleat Word of God, abridged) in the West End, and it was bleedin' hilarious. i was in stiches the whole time. I'd love to see the RSC doing Compleat Wrks. It's the funniest show I've seen, I think. Good stuff. And the footnotes are brilliatn. Very Terry Pratchett-esque.

HAHAHA! That's fabulouis! We had a few mishaps like that. During Compleat Wrks, the guy playing Juliet was "dead" ont he stage, and "Romeo" had to come in and find "her." And every single time, "Romeo" would accidently kick "Juliet" in . . . you know where. So all of us on set would be going "Oh no. . . did he do it again?" "Um. . . yeaaaaah he did. Oooh, Nate. ::)" And you could definitely see "Juliet" kind of doubling up. Heheheh, it was hilarious. I miss the booth.

Okay quick poll, which is more fun, backstage or stage?

Why must you ask such a hard question? ???

hmmm maybe backstage b/c of all the funny stuff that goes on that the audience can't see?...honesty though, its a tough choice....

actually Rehearsals may be the most fun....

LostEnchantment
04-15-2005, 07:46 AM
Yeah rehearsals are the most fun!* *:lol2:

A few funny mishaps for some of the plays I've been in is that in Rebel Without a Cause the guy who was playing Jim was doing a fight scene with knives (not real knives of course it was actually one of those flip out combs that they used to have in the 50s but it looked like a knife from where the audience was sitting) and the other guy playing Buzz accidentally knocked his "knife" out of his hand and it flew into the audience! Then he got back up and said "Do you want me to fight *then looks down at his fists* these?" It was so funny! But the good news afterwards is that the knife went flying towards my sister (I mean not to make that sound mean or anything but it's better then it flying at someone who really thinks it's a knife) who knew it was a mistake so she picked it up and brought it backstage for the next scene!

Do yall have anymore funny stories? I got plenty more!* *:lol2:

OK, ahem, I am joining. :-*

And I say backstage is more fun. I stage manage and do lights and curtain as well. I have also been an AD once and loved it. I used to do stuff on the stage but I don't really like it so backstage is the clear winner.

OMG! I have to join!

I've seen just about any broadway musical that has come out since the 80's.* I also was in a lot of theatre growing up and I still do some in the summer or during school.*

Once on This Island (Erzulie)
Jesus Christ Superstar (Mary)
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Narrator)

South Pacific (Chorus)
Once Upon A Mattress (Chorus)
You're A Good Man Charlie Brown (Sally)

Cinderella (Cinderella)
Show Boat (Chorus)
Sound of Music (Marta)

I've also sang songs as solos or duets in various chorus's from:

Starlight Express (Starlight Express)
Oliver! (As Long As He Needs Me)
Lion King (Shadowland)
Jekyll and Hyde (In His Eyes)
Chicago (Cell Block Tango)

And I'm seeing Wicked when I go home in May, I can't wait :)
I've also seen Rent 24 times (and for those of you who don't know, they are making the movie RENT as we speak, well maybe it's already done, but I am excited about that as well)

Does anyone here like Hedwig and the Angry Inch? I love that show and the movie is great too.

Wow u sound exactly like my friend kim...(Erin- how many times has she seen it now?) there was this long period last year where she literally saw it at least once every two weeks.

I <3 RENT!!!

and since this is a group about theater, this isn't really THAT off topic. Erin...since u're not online and apparently REFUSE to turn ur phone on, what time am i picking u up to go see Wizard of Oz? (which is a play, hence making this not off topic )

EDIT: Erin- nvm i just read through this STAGE posts and realized u're seeing fiddler right now lol. oo i def should have told u or megan to get harvey's autograph for me...assuming you SD...but this is u so u prob will.

oh yeah stage resume thingy....

hmm....

Cab driver in Harvey
Dancer in Anything Goes
Juror #10 in 12 Angry Women
Buzz(/Beth) in Father of the Bride
Dancer in Sound of Music
-also helped build sets for all the above (mainly Sound of Music for which i spent an entire saturday building sets with my friend, our director, and the creepy security guard)
Lights (credited as "Lighting Master" lol) for You're a Good Man Charlie Brown

......well those are just what i've done in high school. I did more when I was younger, both at school and at camp, and at camp had done a bunch of solo/duets for random broadway songs.

and apparently i'm the only junior this year who's done enough shows to qualify for that thespian...thing. yay that.

Allrighty then! *Theatre! *Kewl! *Hmmmm... a theatrical resume...
Well, starting with High School...
Mostly backstage, light booth, costumes, makeup, set design, etc. for Girl in the Mirror, The Ice Wolf, Voices from the High School. *Played Susan in Girl in the Mirror, and over the course of 2 weeks: Lucy, Linus, Sally, and Snoopy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (flu outbreak and I knew all the parts... Super Understudy!).
In Community/University Theater/Opera...
AD, musical director, propmaster for Ladies in Retirement and My 3 Angels. *Annelle in Steel Magnolias, Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit, Fairy Godmother in Cinderella (rogers and hammerstein version). Carmen in Carmen, Queen of the Night (aria) from the Magic Flute, Gypsy girl in Carmen (diff. year), various smaller roles in operas in too many other languages to count!

Does opera count?

angelharp42
04-16-2005, 02:29 AM
Cinderella was fun, but not very challenging. It was a little cringe-worthy, esp. the choreography(!), and Cinderella never laundered her costume... or wore deodorant. Prince Charming nearly hit me in the head with the glass slipper one night, and dropped it on another. The "magic" was fun. Lots of fishing wire and hidden 7 year-old "mouse" extras. My dad was the King, though (started out as the Herald, but the King hurt his back and my dad had to step in w/ 2 weeks rehearsal), and we did the song "Boys and Girls" which is pretty hard. And I got to throw LOTS of micro-flake glitter! It sucked only when I got strep when we had to do 3 shows in one day. By the end of the night, my throat was actually BLEEDING! But nobody noticed, thank gawd!

OK! That's my Cinderella story! I'll shut up now!

BurningStar4
04-16-2005, 02:36 AM
Haha your's sounds much more entertaining than mine. There was a lot of drama amongst everyone in the cast, I forget why, it was a few years ago....but I hated being Cinderella, it was such a bore! I wanted to be a step-sister instead :( And our prince was gay.....and he was having a tough time of kissing me, figures ::)

angelharp42
04-16-2005, 02:54 AM
Our step-family was Hi-Larious!!!
On a side note... high school and community theater can pay off! My friend Katie (Sally in my year of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown) went on to be the helpless victim in the Visa check card commercial with the super-heroes that premiered at the Super Bowl. It's a start!

YAY FOR SEEING WICKED!!!!!!!!!!!!! I <3 show SOOOOO much!!! Oh, and P.S. i am the BIGGEST Idina Menzel fan that ever lived, and RENT is an AMAZING SHOW....i am SOOO excited for the Movie....have any of you read the screenplay? its AMAZING!!!

YES LISA, I *WAS* seeing Fiddler....Harvey Fierstein is the FUNNIEST MOST TALENTED PERSON EVER!!!! He was so emotionally into the role, he knew when it was time for comic relief and when it was time to be serious....he was AWESOME....AND he signed my playbill whilst i was stagedooring....!!!!

ALL of you have amazing resumes!!! I like LOVE all the shows you mentioned....its funny that you should talk about Cinderella, b/c its *may* be the show my school is doing next year.....hmmm....in your opinion, is there any part that you would recommend?

thats AWESOME....i hope Broadway works out for you....i mean it is becoming a tougher and tougher business and its becoming very demanding b/c everyone wants a perfect performance every night.....take for instance one of my idols, Idina Menzel....she was a nothing wedding-singer for years, auditioned on a whim for a little show called Rent, and the next thing you know, she's winning a Tony for Wicked....i dunno if you all heard or not, but Idina cracked a rib falling through a trap door the DAY BEFORE SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO LEAVE THE SHOW!! So her understudy, Shosana Bean, ended up having to perform the role of Elphaba INSTEAD OF IDINA for her supposed final show (i was there)....everyone, and literally, i mean EVERYONE in that audience had come to see Idina, NOT Shosana, and yet Shosana put on an AMAZING performance, but it went by the wayside since people were mad/sad that Idina was not there (Idina came out on stage in the last scene...so we weren't TOTALLY disappointed)....wow, sorry, i get on these rants.....

P.S. a small round of applause for our new group vice president....Aeryn Crichton(#5)!!!!

Thanks for the good luck wishes Mole....

I saw Indina a few times during RENT and she is truly a great talent...I wish I could of caught her in Wicked. I also am a big fan of Adam Pascal from RENT....I was lucky and got to meet him during Aida and got his autograph and stuff, he is such a sweetie.

Like I said above I really did not care for Cinderella.....not really my personal style for a musical, especially one to be in. But I'd recommend a step-sister or the fairy godmother. I was Cinderella and I hated it, the part was boring (like most main roles).

angelharp42
04-17-2005, 02:57 PM
Pretty much my same opinion on the Cinderella role... i think most of the ingenue roles aren't as much fun as the "supporting" roles or villians. *Fairy Godmother was fun, and any of the step-family are really good, especially if you have someone good to play off. *The Queen is a nice role, too. *I liked the Fariy Godmother's magic tricks, several people came up and asked how we did them after the show. *A hint: *if you have petite people playing the mice, you can hide one under the table and they can move the chair with fishing wire, stuff like that.

BurningStar4

Fairy God-Mother had the best songs too.

TheMole171
04-17-2005, 04:17 PM

Has anyone been in West Side Story....I was but only as a dancer. I know a lot of High Schools aren't allowed to do the show, but I did it in Community Theatre a few years ago...the dancing was really hard though but I was only asked to be in it because the people from the professional dance school I practiced at asked us to. I was just wondering if there were any other dancers in the thread who may of done the show?

My school did West Side Story, but I was in sixth grade, so I was not in it. *But they left every thing in, rather suprisingly. *They're usually so uptight.

So, I'm back from NYC. *I saw three shows.

The first was The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. *It's not out yet. . . we went to the invited preview. *But when it's out, you should all go. *It is. . . hilarious. *A sample:

"The word is 'Jihad'."
"Defintion?"
"A holy war to
"Can you use that in a sentence?"
"Quick, Billy, get behind that Western Wall. *I think I see a Jihad coming."

Good stuff. *

On the second night, we saw. . . Spamalot! *My aunt spent the whole day saying "We'll have to figure out to see tonight. . . Democracy's supposed to be good. *Nine men in gray suits. *Its about German politics during the Cold War." *(She was kidding, I knew that.) *But we had to go to the Shubert where Spamalot is playing to drop off a gift for the company manager. *And then we went up to the box office, I thought to drop it off. *And then my aunt picked up tickets. *I actually shrieked. LIke. . . "We're seeing. . . Spamalot?!" "Yep! Did you really think we were seeing Democracy?" "AAAAAAAHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" *Oh wow, it was hilarious. *We were right in the fourth row orchestra. *I was just yards from. . . Tim Curry and Hank Azaria and David Hyde Pierce. *I was in stitches the whole time. *Gods, I love Monty Python. *;D *Shan't say any more, b/c I know some of you are seeing it. . .

And on the last night. . . Wicked. *Wicked was beyond description. *I cannot express how I loved it. *"Defying Gravity" is the best song ever. *It's my new theme song. *Shoshana Bean was incredible. *Elphaba is one of my dream roles. *God. . . Defying Gravity. *I started crying in the middle. *I really love this show. *I'm just babbling now, so I'll stop. *

Defying Gravity is my new favourite song. I'm ordering it as my ringtone. <3

Burningstar, if you want to see Spamalot, order tickets NOW. When we were at the box office, people were going up to buy tickets and the constant refrain was "You don't have anything until JULY?"

When we were waiting for the company manager who had our tickets, we were right outside the stage door, and it opened and there was. . . Tim Curry! In fully costume! I was like. . . :o :o

Wow, thanks for letting me know! I will tell my mom to order a pair tomorrow!

I am still so jealous you saw Tim Curry, I have loved him since Rocky Horror ;)

I did see his "look-a-like" Terrance Mann though in the revival of Rocky Horror a couple years ago with Sebastian Bach and Gilbert Goddfried. What a show, it was great. My leg was also humped by Sebastian and Terrance gave me a kiss :-*

AHHH I LOVE DEFYING GRAVITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favoritest songs of all time!!!! Its a shame that you didn't see Idina sing it live, but Shoshana does a GREAT version of it....she also does an AMAZING version of No Good Deed...i was blown away by both....

I have tix for Spamalot, but not til July...lol, and they aren't even orch, they're mezz...its IMPOSSIBLE to get tix, its CRAZY!!! I was right by Spelling Bee the other night and i have read some of the reviews and it sounds like a HILARIOUS show....my friend lives in Putnam County, so she got tix as a joke, but now i'm jealous...i wanna see it....

a question about spamalot though (this is assuming you've seen the movie) how much like the movie is it, and are the jokes translated onto the stage well?

The White Lady
04-17-2005, 10:41 PM
BlueStar--I bet Tim Curry will still be in it this summer. It is, after all, the hottest show on Broadway. You don't leave a show like that quickly. ;)

Mole--I was dissapointed that I didn't get to see Idina, but wow. . . Shoshana was incredible. Defying Gravity. Wow. Hello new obsession. And her "No Good Deeds" was heart breaking. She was absolutely amazing. Just. . . wow.

Hmm. . . Spamalot is a LOT different than Holy Grail. But it's still hilarious, and the jokes definitely translate. It's just as funny as Holy Grail, no worries. Different, but not worse. It's. . . Broadway-ified. ;D

i kind of want to see spamalot, mainly because of the cast, though i've never seen the movie.

i've been thinking of going to see a broadway show sometime soon w/ one of my friends, preferably one i haven't seen yet (i've seen very few...wicked, rent, and glass menagerie). anyone have any suggestions?

Batboy, Tick Tick Boom, The Last 5 Years, Hedwig and the Angry Inch?

there's a program near me called "curtain call" that does semi-professional as well as professional threatre programs and has things going on at all times of the year and for all different ages, from very young to adult. I saw their production of the "wizard of oz" on Saturday (my friend was ASM-ing it! ;D) and i thought it was very well done. Those types of programs are very good for getting your foot in the door for things...also, the play house where i saw Godspell (technically a play BARN...) is a type of place that would be good....i hope it works out for you!

Godspell is a fabulous show. Why did you opt not to have a solo, CC4F? (Did you already answer that?) I loove her song. And We Beseech Thee is one of my favourites.

I'm to be inducted into the International Thespain Society. I'm the only junior from my school who qualified, along with ten seniors. There was a thing about it in this newsletter thingy they send to the parents at our school that describes it (and also mentions everyone who qualified EXCEPT me), and apparenlty it'll give me scholarship oppertunities, so maybe i will get into college after all. :lol2:

Broadway is love. One of the universities I'm thinking of is Drew, and I admit, one of the big things in its favor is Broadway. I adore it. I've seen. . .

Aida, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, (and been backstage on all of the above), Avenue Q, Spelling Bee, Wicked, Spamalot, We Will Rock You (ack), Saturday Night Fever (flashing floor. need I say more?), and Jesus Christ Superstar.

(I need to see Wicked, Spamalot, and Lion King again).

And that's just the musicals. :P Also seen The Woman in Black (scared the hell outta me), Proof, The Exonerated, Hamlet, The Scottish Play, another shakespeare play that I just blanked on the name of, Compleat Works of God, and Metamorpheses.

I can't imagine life without theatre. I really, reallly can't. I live and breathe it, I love everything about it.

Welcome, DLG! :)

I saw Into the Woods on Broadway w/ Vanessa Williams so it was really good. I've also been in the show as the witch and it was a lot of fun.

I looked up a synopsis online because it's kind of a long thing to tell. But here it is:

Into the Woods blends various familiar fairy tales with an original story of a childless Baker and his Wife, who catalyze the action of the story by attempting to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child.

In the first act, the characters set out to achieve their goal of living "Happily Ever After" through familiar routes - Cinderella goes to the Ball and captures the heart of Prince Charming, Jack climbs the Beanstalk and finds a land of Giants and Gold, Little Red Riding Hood survives her clash with the wolf at Grandma's house, and Rapunzel manages to escape her tower with the aid of a handsome prince who climbs her long hair. The Baker and his Wife move through their stories while pursuing their own goal - the witch who keeps Rapunzel (revealed to be the Baker's sister) has put the curse on his house, and agrees to lift it if the Baker and his Wife can find the ingredients to help her reverse a spell which her mother has laid on her, keeping her old and ugly. Those ingredients are: A Slipper As Pure As Gold, which the Baker's wife gets from Cinderella, A Cow As White As Milk, which the Baker buys from Jack in exchange for the fateful magic beans, A Cape As Red As Blood, which the Baker gets from Little Red Riding Hood in exchange for freeing her and Granny from the Wolf, and Hair As Yellow As Corn, which they get from Rapunzel. The ingredients are gathered, and the spell works, stripping the Witch of her power, but restoring her beauty. At the end of Act I, all characters seem poised to live "Happily Ever After".

Act Two, however, deals with the consequences that traditional fairy tales conveniently ignore. What does one do with a dead Giant in the back yard? Does marrying a Prince really lead to a happy and fulfilling life? Is carving up the wolf the solution? Is the Giant always wrong? In Act Two, all the characters must deal with what happens AFTER "Happily Ever After". As they face a genuine threat to their community, they realize that all actions have consequences, and their lives are inescapably interdependent, but also that that interdependence is their greatest strength.

It's really a cute show and it's enjoyable. It was amazing on Broadway, but that's Broadway. If you're seeing it in a community theatre I am sure it will be really good, that is where I performed in it and we did a great job, have fun!!

Well, if you can only see one show on Broadway, The Lion King's a pretty good choice. :) It's probably the most visually spectacular show I've ever seen. Really incredible stuff. I'm hoping to see it again to just take everything in.

For John T's last show, he wore a red track suit like the one that Idina Menzel "famously" wore for her appearance at her last Wicked performance (she had cracked a rib the night before....see one of my other posts...note: i was AT Idina's last show).....haha god i LOVE HIM....;D

I was in Guys and Dolls two years ago. Not one of my favourite shows, but it had its moments.

So I went to see I Am My Own Wife today. And here's what I had to say in my LJ about it, because my wrists hurt and I don't feel like typing something else up. :P

It's a one man show in which Jefferson Mayes playes over 40 characters. Its really unbelievably. Just incredible. Mayes was amazing. Completely different voices for each character and everything. If you get a chance to see this show, GO. It's a true story of this transvestite who survived not only Nazi Germany but Communist East Germany. She has this museum of antique German furniture and ran the only gay cabaret in East Germany. Bloody amazing. More on the show later.

Afterwards, everyone else went home but Maddy and Zook and I waited outside the stage door. After 15-20 minutes. . . he came out!! EEE! Jefferson Mayes himself! And since we were the only ones there, he actually stayed and chatted with us! And we all shook hands (ee!) and he signed our programs and we chatted. Wow. So cool. He remembered us, too. We were right in the front row, and he remembered all of us! Heeeee. :D :D :D

yes, and of course the best part was the lighting, especially since the person doing the lighting had never done lighting for anything before and wasnt even told the lighting cues until the day of the performance. ;)

Gerard could never be deformed. :-* :-*

I liked the movie, personally. Emmy Rossum had a good voice, as did Gerard. Cinematography was incredible, but the rest was kinda so so.

I was going to see the tour that's in Boston right now (haven't seen it since I was 8) but I heard it was AWFUL. So I'm not. :P

Fun fact: My aunt told me that theatres have to be 'Phantom-ised'. A lot of owners will have back walls torn out so the theatre can be expanded and loads of new space has to be found underneath for the lake and the dozens and dozens of traps. It's a HUGE show. However, once a theatre has been Phantomised, it can play literally any show, because Phantom is the biggest and most complex show there has ever been. A lot of theatre owners do it for just that reason, so they can play the really huge shows.

By the way, I know I mention my aunt and uncle a lot. This is because they are both invovled in theatre. My aunt is an electrician on Broadway. She does preshow stuff like hanging lights, etc and she also runs the lights on various shows. My uncle is the producer of Beauty and the Beast. So it's not just random, all the stuff that I quote them on comes from good authority.

yah Phantom ROCKS....*drools over Hugh Panaro*

in the movie, Gerry Butler plays a RIDICULOUSLY hottt phantom (which is key), but i found the makeup job the did was really poor. At one point he is wearing a mask that would normally very clearly show his defect, but it DOESNT....very annoyed by that, and also, it looks like he has RADIATION burns...not some skull like face like was was SUPPOSED to have...other than those few complaints, i LOVE the movie....

side note to Nads:
BUQUET THE STAGEHAND: …And in the book, he’s got a hole where his nose ought to be, and his hands are cold and he’s like a cadaver all over!
SOME DANCER: But what about in the movie?
BUQUET: In the movie? He’s got a terrible… third degree… SUNBURN!

AND

THE PHANTOM: YOU CAN NEVER EVER LEAVE MY BATCAVE NOW THAT YOU HAVE SEEN MY ACCURSED RADIATION BURNS!
CHRISTINE: I don’t—it’s just—it’s not even that much of your face!

AND

RAOUL: OMG YOU SAW HIS FACE?
CHRISTINE: It was terrible!
RAOUL: How terrible?
CHRISTINE: Well… not really all that terrible, it wasn’t even his whole face—it wasn’t even really half his face…
RAOUL: IT SOUNDS SO TERRIBLE.
CHRISTINE: And I mean, really, it’s not like he’s a leper or anything… really, you could just have him sleep on the right side of the bed and he’d look just fine if you were lying on the other side… really fine…
RAOUL: YOU MUST BE TRAUMATIZED. TELL ME YOU ARE TRAUMATIZED.
CHRISTINE: Well, there was that whole murder thing just now.

AND

RAOUL: Oh, COME ON, Christine! You hung out with this guy! You fell in love with his stupid voice! You ought to be able to recognize it!
CHRISTINE: Well, it does sound kind of familiar…
RAOUL: And you saw his face, right?
CHRISTINE: Well… yeah… I mean… he bears kind of a passing resemblance to my father… I mean, aside from the giant Sunburn of Doom… He really looked like my dad when we were singing about the Music of the Night and he was running his hands all over me.
RAOUL: YOU ARE WRONG IN THE HEAD.

AND

CHRISTINE: YOINK!
[Christine rips off the Phantom’s cute little Zorro mask, revealing a monster with half his face burned off and his eyelid all messed up and half his hair greying and fallen out… despite the fact most of this wasn’t covered by the little Zorro mask, and it looked fine two minutes ago.]
CHRISTINE: WHOA!
THE PHANTOM: WAHHHHHHH!
EVERYONE ELSE: OH MY GOD, HE’S SLIGHTLY UNATTRACTIVE ON ONE SIDE! TO ARMS!

The White Lady
04-27-2005, 10:44 PM
1) This changes a lot, but for the moment I'll say Wicked. I'll be obsessed with Spamalot once the CD comes out.

2) That's hard. . . I just saw I am My Own Wife, which was incredible. The show that left the greatest the greatest impact, however, was The Woman in Black. I'll explain why tomorrow, because I don't want to think about her now. . . when it's dark. . . *shudder*

okay, the topics lately have been very off-topic so here i am starting a new topic:

1) What is your favorite musical? why?
2) What is your favorite play? why?

1) Hard for me to give only one but I guess I'll go with, Rent. When it came out it really introduced a new element into theatre and explored topics that were mainly taboo in society. This musical opened up a lot of ignorant people to accept others for who they are and even gained a little knowledge of what it is like to live on Avenue A and be gay, have AIDS, etc.

2) Again, another hard one. I'm going to go with Death of a Salesman. Maybe it's just because i saw Bryan Denehy in it, but he was really remarkable and a great actor. I also love the play and all the content, emotion, etc. It's very realistic and identifiable to what you feel as an adult as far as how successful your life is or has been, how you support your family and your feelings for your family (how they grow stronger and deminish over time). I also enjoyed the Graduate though and it was really amazing seeing Kathleen Turner on stage as well.

Aeryn Crichton
04-28-2005, 02:38 PM
1) Rent, for various reasons. Mainly just because it's awesome. Although my answer may have been influenced by the fact that most people I know have seen it at least once, and most of those people loved it. Even my teachers sometimes make random references to rent (and I still love it despite that). The plot is interesting, the songs are awesome, and it deals with serious subject matter without becoming too dark itself. Oh, that and I'm Maureen...though I don't believe if I ever found a Mark I'd leave him for a woman, but I've yet to come across anyone Mark-like enough to test that theory on. ..............I <3 Mark!

2) More difficult.....i havent really seen htat many plays, though 've always been fond of A Christmas Carol (the non-musical version).

The White Lady
04-28-2005, 03:11 PM
And now, a better answer to 2.

The Woman in Black is a 2 man show, and it's the most well executed show I've ever seen. Everything had to be dead on, exact, there was no room for mistakes--and none were made. The acting was incredible. One guy played probably about 20 roles. It's an absolutely amazing show. If you see it, go to the matinee and bring friends.

DomsLOSTgirl
04-30-2005, 06:26 PM
wow those are tough ones.

1) hm....i'd have to say.......oh gosh...i can't even choose........hmm......i;ll get back to you on that one

2) romeo and juliet...i love shakespeare...i lvoe that play. it is so beautiful.....i don't know what else to say besides i love it.

TheMole171
04-30-2005, 11:14 PM
i just realized i didn't answer my own question...

1) my ALL TIME favorite is a tough choice, but i'd have to say Phantom of the Opera just because it was one of the first shows i ever saw and i have loved the music longer than any other show...two close seconds are Wicked and Rent but i would not consider them ALL TIME favorites YET....;D

2) By FAR would have to be 12 Angry Men i have read it too many times to count and have seen it performed both on B'way and off numerous times. It is sooo well written and almost impossible to mess up when performing. i :sweety: it! and the current B'way rendition of it is AMAZING!!! go see it. now. seriously. now!! ;D

Honestly, Rent has never held any interest for me, perhaps becuase I've only heard the CD and not seen the show. Maybe I should see it. . .

(A) White Lady - GO SEE RENT!!!! It is an AMAZING show and currently has a great cast....

(B) Brooklyn Synopsis: It is the story of a woman who is a star in france who falls in love with an american soldier. She gives birth to his child while he is off in war and then he disappears to America leaving her alone with the child. She names the baby girl Brooklyn after the place where the man is from...when Brooklyn is just a little girl, she is orphaned by her mother and lived in an orphanage...she has a love of music and becomes a big star in France. She decides later to go to America and find her father...so she does and she meets a big American star named Paradice (thats the actual spelling) and they get into a big "sing off" i won't tell you how it ends, but thats the general synopsis. She also meets a homeless man who helps her out....yah its kinda confusing to explain, but they do it really well....DEF go see it!!! ;D

Megan: I have to tell you something
Me: What?

Megan: You should sooo blame my sister for this, but we're going to see DRS and Spelling Bee

That is so funny...I went Saturday afternoon, too bad I didn't go a day earlier, not that I'd know who you are anyway, but you'd probably recognize me haha.

I saw Julie Reiner (sp?) in her place....and she was amazing! I think she sounded better than Eden (from what I have heard of her on the soundtrack). I also had the understudy for Taylor, he was pretty good...kinda cute in a older way haha. I saw a few of the actors when I was waiting to go into the theatre but I had to get home right after the show so I didn't stick around.

hello everyone...i have 2 things to post:

1) I declare a day of mourning for the loss of JLT and Carole Shelley from the Wicked on sunday... :(

2) i have NO IDEA who will win Best Actor in a Musical OR Best Musical...there are SOOOOO many good choices... do you think should start a poll? or do you all just wanna say what you think...

Does that mean Michelle Federer is the only original lead left?

I'm guessing Spamalot will win Best Musical, though Spelling Bee certainly could win as well. It really is a delightful show (Billy! Put down those philacteries. We're Episcopalian.).

As for Best Actor. . . I don't know. I'm rooting for Tim Curry or Hank Azaria. ;D

Sean: I LOVE YOU TOO!!!

No worries. In fact, we're in the minority here. Most people haven't seen that many shows on Broadway, and honestly, I'm surprised that I've seen ANY shows nominated. :)

You know, I feel bad for David Hyde Pierce. Of the three big names in Spamalot, he's the only one who didn't get nominated. :-/

^ haha Star...i KNOW that was SOO RANDOM...

ok, so my thoughts on the Tonys...

- The Light in the Piazza SHOULD DIE for pulling *almost* an Avenue Q on Spamalot....Spamalot should have won SOO MANY MORE AWARDS!!! GRRRR

- NORBS WON!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!! And he *officially* has the most amazing voice ever....

- Idina and Taye looked GORGEOUS together in the audience...:D

- Hugh Jackman should NEVER HOST AGAIN...although the "Never Gonna Dance" bit was cute...

- remember the time when JOHN TARTAGLIA WAS THERE!!! and i SCREAMED!!! I <3 HIM SOOO MUCH!!!

- Gary Beach wins for best live performance...i LOVE him...

- Sara Ramierez was SOOO funny with her dress and she has and AMAZING voice (find your grail...)

so yes... that is what i thought...what did you all think?

i'm going to see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with NORBS!....AND Spelling Bee on saturday so i'll com report everything about those shows when i get back!!!

Heh...was I the only one who wanted to jump him while he was singing?

Ooo and remember the time John Tartaglia was there and I thought to myself, ERIN'S PROBABLY SCREAMING RIGHT NOW!

hehe and the al sharpton thing was just funny.

I seriously cried when I watched that trailer....I cannot wait for that movie!

Back when I first saw RENT when it first came out, I was like THIS NEEDS TO BE A MOVIE SO I CAN WATCH IT ALL THE TIME!. But then I lost hope, since it wasn't cool to make a musical into a movie anymore. Luckily with the success of Chicago (and somewhat success with Moulin Rouge) that changed! I was also so happy that Justin Timberlake did not end up playing Adam Pascal's role of Roger (I remember back during 9/11 when they were thinking about making this movie, they were speculating JT as playing Roger >:( )

I am so happy and so excited! I only wish Jon Larson could be around to see it all happen!

The two of them have GREAT chemistry together...DO NOT see the show if either one isn't in it, b/c it will definately not be as good!! Sherie Rene Scott has one of the greatest roles...her character is GREAT!! Oh, and with out giving anything away, the surprise ending is GREAT!!! it was the same kind of shocker as Wicked's ;D !! Ok, so after the show, i stagedoored, per usuale, and i MET both Norbs AND John!!! and i got them BOTH to sign my playbill AND took pictures of/with them!!! :jump:

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee:

the theatre is set up like an school...its SOO NEAT!! You REALLY think that you are seeing some school's spelling bee! It was HYSTERICAL too, p.s.!!! I can see why Dan Fogler won the Tony, he has the BEST character!! The way the theatre works, there is no stage door, so you just wait in the Lobby...it was weird, i didn't like it...:P So, long story short, I met Dan Fogler and got his autograph, but DIDN'T get a picture with him :( but it's okay!!

Good news and bad news!

The good news is I just read that Les Miserables is coming back to Boston next year. I have never seen the show even though I love both the music (doesn't One More Day just give you chills every time?) and the Victor Hugo novel.

The bad news is that I've also discovered that the producer, Broadway In Boston is owned by ClearChannel, an eeeeeevil media corporation that is highly complicit in the current Iraq debacle, and the inevitable blowback that's going to hit America.

I so hate it when my enthusiasms and my principles conflict. Next they'll be telling me I can only get tickets at Wal-Mart. :(

Ah well, we're tentatively planning a theater trip in August. Anyone have any 411 on cool shows playing in city theaters, preferably in the Eastern half of the US and not in New York?

Rames, I know what it is like when enthusiasms and principles conflict. But you must see Les Miserables, it's brilliant!

I would suggest just going to Ticketmaster and looking around there for tickets...

Oh yeah, and here's a link to the Philadelphia Theater tickets page if you feel like coming down to the Philly area. http://www.theatermania.com/content/listings.cfm?int_city_id=12

Rams, Did you go see Into the Woods?* Was that you, I get so confused?* Did you like it?

First of all, thanks for the link, JerseyGirl. I missed Sweeney Todd, rats! We actually have family in the NJ/PA area, and might prefer to visit somewhere we haven't been -- Philly's kind of a place we can always go to, if you know what I mean. Nice city, though, no offense intended! :)

Yes, that was me who went to see Into the Woods last weekend. I absolutely loved it. The music was wonderful, Sondheim can turn a phrase like no other. I didn't expect it to be as funny as it was - everyone was cracking up! The girl playing Little Red Riding Hood was a phenomenal actress and had us all in stitches.

At the end of Act I (which is really long, if you recall), the crowd flowed into the lobby and some people near me were heading out the door saying stuff like, "Wow, what a great show." So I said, "It's not over, you know." "What? It's not? I thought that was it..." "No, " I said, "Don't leave! It's not over!" Maybe if I had kept my mouth shut we could have upgraded to better seats. But, it was a small theater anyway, so no complaints at all. :)

I'd see it again in a heartbeat. Thanks for asking!
