So, remember when Kate and Sawyer were held captive by Ben on the second Island? They were forced to help build a RUNWAY which no real explanation was given as to why? I think they were building the runway so Lapidus would have somewhere to land safely. Ben knew he wouldn't teleport with the others so he made sure his pilot Lapidus had somewhere safe to land. Remember Ben is in really bad shape he is NOT supposed to come back to the Island he is cheating his fate.
