View Full Version : technology
Carmelita 03-09-2009, 07:08 PM I just had a thought.. if Jacob doesn't like technology and Ben answers to Jacob then how can the others live in the Barraks, using electricity, and the dharma test facilities not to mention Mikhail at the flame with a satelite, colour lcd screens, internet a computer etc... had there not have been a jacob siting I'd now think he was a lie made up by Ben so he could blame someone for his deciept.

They moved out of the Barracks in season 3 for this very reason.

Maybe that is why Ben does not heal like Locke and got a tumor on his spine. The island is sending him a message. The island is unhappy with Ben for using electricity and living like Dharma.
LadybirdKate 03-10-2009, 12:30 PM I like that alot Pascal...and it's always been on board with the idea that although Jacob might be Ben's 'leader'...that he is also either being held by Ben...or protected by Ben (which I'm not certain yet). If he were being held...it would be because he still has the most insight and knowledge into the island. If he were being protected...question is...from what?
Course I could be waaay off on this one. ;)
Carmelita 03-10-2009, 12:42 PM the ash surrounds the cabin is that what keeps Jacob a prisoner in the cabin? Did Ben spread the ashes? Are the Ashes Jacob's former body?? soo many questions!!!
100%

Nice!! That would explain his tumor, not to mention the many many beatings he takes fromt he Losties, the arrow in his shoulder from Russeau.. perhaps the island/jacob is making Ben suffer cause Ben is a bad person unlike Locke who is a good person who does things for the good of the island..

In some cultures it is believed that ghosts and other spirits are unable to cross a line of salt. Jacob could be a spirit of some sort, perhaps in some respect related to Ben's mother and the whispering in the jungle.
In witchcraft and ritual magic, a "magic circle" is cast to contain energies. The circle is thought to be a conduit which allows one dimension to communicate with another. This could indicate how Jacob can communicate with the outside world.
In the movie "The Skeleton Key", a "circle of protection" is invoked by drawing a circle in chalk around oneself and using a spell. An individual inside this circle is unable to leave and is trapped there.
In other magic, beings of magical nature can be trapped and contained by a circle composed of the apparent material used to surround the cabin. Jacob is being held prisoner within this circle. That is also part of why he asks Locke for "help".
crazy !

I think we're on to something here.. that story was freeky!! and yeah Skeleton Key- I totally remember that!! so- who put the ash/ salt stuff around the cabin? I hope we see that sometime soon cause it means something!! I can't wait to find out!
emmaAmethyst 03-10-2009, 08:41 PM Alternate thought about "Jacob hates technology": Effectively everything that we think of as "technology" requires a power source. Any "technology" that would be getting schlepped to the cabin would be battery powered. What if Jacob is either disturbed or invogorated in some way by electromagnetic changes around him? Maybe the electricity flow in the turned-on flashlight was painful to Jacob. Or, alternatively, maybe even that little bit of electricity flow was enough energy to allow Jacob to toss around Ben. Either way, telling Locke that "Jacob hates technology" could be a way to try to keep Locke from bringing anything like that around Jacob.
On the magic circle front, I'm quite sure that it has an energy-related / magical purpose. Keeping Jacob in is the thing that I'd assumed when we first saw Jacob. But there's also the possibility that it's purpose is to keep any kind of electromagnetic fields away from Jacob. (Sort of a magical Faraday cage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage), if you will.) Whether that's to protect him or keep him trapped is yet to be seen.
ETA: Just happened on this elaboration (http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Cabin#Circle_of_ash) in Lostpedia about the ash being "protection or magic or containment."
Note that one of the objects that Richard took to the "interview" with young Locke in the very early 60's was a small vial of apparently the same material as the circle. And that is one of the objects that Locke selected as "his" ... (For whatever that's worth.)
NBC001 03-10-2009, 09:18 PM I just wanted to add that there was also a circle of salt around the Pearl
EKO: I don't see nothing.
[He looks down at Locke and sees a circle where not much is growing.]
[We see Eko tasting some dirt in the circle area.]
EKO: It's salty.
LOCKE: What?
EKO: The earth. It's been salted so that nothing can grow.
LOCKE: Why would any want to salt -- there's nothing here.
EKO: I believe they made a circle -- a target -- so that this place can be seen from up above.

Good point.. so they are Lockes Ashes, was Jacob reincarnated in Locke? I think that's the question.. Is this why the cabin can be seen by Locke why Jacob can be heard by Locke?? Is this what makes Locke so special is he the 2nd coming of Jacob?
