I thought it at the start of S5 and this episode made me really believe it..
Could time travel be the reason why ....
1) Locke couldn't see Jacob? Because he exists in a different time.
2) The whispers are people who are in a different time zone viewing another time zone, for eg. In this epi, when Sun and Frank go to Dharmaville and clearly hear whispers , is that because all the hustle and bustle of our 1977 dharma people were disguised in time?

I see what you are saying. I think the whispers have to do with different times as well. Kind of like being in the same space as something going on at a different time and a little of it seeping through in the forms of whispers.

I also think you could be on to something regarding Jacob. It's hard to wrap my head around it and come to a theory but know we know time travel and course correction are in play and that may have something to do with it.

I remember when Ben and Locke 1st went to see Jacob and Ben was convinced there was someone there and with all the aftermath of the cabin shaking, plates getting thrown etc its obvious there was someone there. I also think this could explain Christian. When Jack brought his body back to the island , Christian probably flashed back or forward to another time.

When Jacob says help Me, I think what he is asking for help getting out of a time period he is stuck in. I think Jacob is actually younger then the 06 and time travelled after them. He is stuck in a different period like the the 05 currently are, I think we will finally see him at the end of the series when everything is harmonized. Everyone reunites with the correct time period. O6 back in 2010 which will be the end of the series.

Some good thinking, the whispers being associated with "time overlays" on the island has been discussed you should be able to find some good threads around the place =))

Jacob being displaced in time, possibly the future is interesting although you would need to expand the idea as to why he is such a leading figurehead with the others in particular the mysterious Alpert and the fact he was a part of those early other days (Jughead epi) and his association with Christian.

I think you are EXACTLY right!! Sun and Frank were there with Christian in the very spot where we saw Kate and Jack and the rest of the DI busy and occupying that space that very day. I think they are hearing the VOICES of those who are there at that very spot but in a different time!!!!

Since time travel was revealed, I've always likened the whispers to "residual haunting's." A residual haunting is where something in the past repeats itself over and over, kinda like Danielle's taped recording.

What if the Jacob we first saw with Ben and Locke in the cabin is Christian, our guiding force, in a future timeline that at some points along the timeline (i.e. the cabin) intersect?

Jacobs definately in the future, i think he will be revealed in the finale!

We cant let go of the "help me" Jacob asked of Locke. Also dont forget the line of ash surrounding Jacobs cabin that Ben was afraid to touch. Not an ounce of me trusts Ben, hes a manipulative sleaze bag and I think hes somehow been able to contain Jacob to a degree.

Working through dreams and Christian maybe all that Jacob can do for the time being.
