View Full Version : Young Ben says he "hated" his father?

I guess I should listen again, but when Ben was talking to Sayid about his father, I swear he says "I hated him" instead of "I hate him". Anyone else hear this?

I heard this also! Perhaps he tried to kill two birds with one stone. The house on fire gets everyone's attention so he can free Sayid. The house on fire is where Roger Linus is sleeping! We know Ben ultimately does kill his father during the purge.

I heard that too.. now maybe his meaning was that he 'hated' him in the past, but now doesn't care about him anymore.. OR, we have another case of time travel.
Interesting!

Absolutely! I thought at first that his father was in the burning bus until I remembered more details about his father's death. But he definitely sounded as though his father was dead. He didn't really die until right before the purge though, right?

That is what I think I heard also. But I got to watch it again to be sure too. I couldnt hear half of what Sayids cop lady was sayiing either.

I heard, "I hate it here." I should probably listen to it again though. I'll know for sure once the AC3 version comes out and I can rip it apart.

Yep. That's what he said.

I heard "hated", too, and at the time, thought it was a time loop thing.

I didn't think of that. But it looked like a man and woman were rescued (or escaped) from the house, so if it was Roger's house, maybe he survives the fire and goes on to be purged.

Maybe Roger was course-corrected out of the fire.

I think you've got it.. Ben thinks that he just killed his dad.. but in fact didn't, this time.

I think Ben "hated him", and now hes made a disconnect. He no longer hates him, hes become indifferent.

I also heard "hated"... maybe he did think he'd killed him tonight. Although I have to say, I didn't really see Ben as a killer yet. He's a weird, sad kid, but I don't think he's murderous... yet. I saw murder as more of something that he grew into over time....

He said, "I hate it here"!

Agreed. He hated life in Dharmaville and asked Sayid to take him to his people.

I heard "I hated him", but I'm open to it being "I hate it here". They both work. I'll listen more closely next time.

My closed captioning read I really hate it here but it still sounds to me like I really hated him. This is the Jack either/neither discussion all over again.

He said both things just at two different times. One time he said "I hate it here" and then later he said, "I hated him". I didn't think about the fact that he probably thought he had sent the van into his house killing his father. Only that's not what happened.

I got my hands on the surround mix of the show and it's definitely, "I really hate it here." Here's the clips.

As heard in the show. No processing done. (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ci0dzzlnm4n)

EQ'ed slightly and slowed down 100% (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?wjonikkmn2f)

Pitch shifted to a lower voice (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?z2iqtnoownn)

That's what I got, too.

I think what he's saying is that he is leaving his father, so that hate relationship is now in the past tense. He's starting a new life.

I don't recall him saying that he hated his father, but I definitely heard him say "I hate it here" at one point.

In what scene did he say "I hated him"? If there is a separate scene, we should look at that one, too--because I like the idea of him thinking he had killed his father.

It's "I hate it here."
If you just listen to the scene, eyes closed, you'll hear "I hate it here."
If you watch the scene, he closes his mouth at the end of "here," and it looks like he said "him."

It's definitely 'hate it here' people! I've rewatched it thrice.

"I hated him". Makes the most sense. I really don't think he could hate a place that he revisits his dead mother, he has a cute girlfriend who makes him dolls, he's on an island for gosh's sakes, and has a weird friend with guyliner making him promises. It's definately "I hated him".

"Here" as in Dharmaville, not the Island.

I'm going to pimp my own post because it kind of got buried on the bottom of the page and it seems like everyone is hearing "hated him" because they want to. I ripped and uploaded the sound clip in this post here. (http://forum.thefuselage.com/showpost.php?p=2135567&postcount=20) This is ripped from the AC3 (surround sound) mix of the show, which means the clip is from one channel of audio and has nearly all background and other extraneous noise removed. I even slowed it down so the syllables could be heard better. The "T" sound at the end of "it" is especially prevalent, so if you're still in doubt, listen to the slowed down version.

Slow version if you don't feel like going to the other post. (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?wjonikkmn2f)

I thought your post was great, thank you--but Guinevere indicated there was one time he said that and another he said "hated him," so I was trying to get the details on that if there was more than one scene.

I rewatched the scenes with both big and little Ben and I only heard the one line, but if s/he could elaborate on where they heard it I'll pull apart the audio and see if we missed anything.
