Remember that famous line from Ben directed at Jack in season 3? Ben remembered that Jack didn't want to save his life as a child and perhaps wanted Jack to redeem himself by removing his tumor.

I know time-traveling can be confusing, but does this mean that Ben remembers his first encounter with the Losties? Wouldn't he remember it was Sayid who shot him?

2) How would Ben know that Jack, a janitor from his past, refused to do a surgery, especially when he wasn't there to hear a refusal? All he knows/knew was that he didn't get a surgery.

Ben could be told by someone else about what really happened, whether Ben wanted to believe it or not. My theory is Ben doesn't believe it because he forgot what happened (according to Alpert) and just used this as bait to get Jack to do the surgery.

I do agree Alpert was telling the truth, and this is why he doesn't recognize Sayid as the man who shot him when he was younger. This was a clever way of the writers to avoid nagging questions like "how does he not recognize Sayid in the future."

I wonder if he was ever really sick with the spinal tumor or if somehow he made it happen just so Jack would have to save his life.
