View Full Version : An interesting thought...
mariners100 12-03-2004, 07:11 PM Are we totally sure that Claire is indeed pregnant? I have read that a woman can actually show the signs of being pregnant, weight gain, loss of monthly womanly stuff, without being pregant. The reason that I bring this up is that when Claire and Charlie are in the woods waiting for Jack to come (Ethan was supposed to get him). Charlie says, I wonder where Jack is. Claire gets a real scared look on her face all most like I don't want him to come becuase he might find out.
Maybe I am off base here, but its a thought.... Wouldn't that be a twist?
Fogey 12-03-2004, 07:46 PM I briefly considered that too. However what about the test strip that showed the pink stripes. Would a false pregnancy result in the appropriate chemical changes to fool that test? I think that Claire is pregnant because the alternative is just too complicated a plot line to play out well on the show.
Nutmae 12-03-2004, 08:00 PM Yes, it's possible for a woman to think she's pregnant when she's not actually, and her body will make adjustments such as missed periods and such, but I've never heard of these experiences lasting so long nor causing a weight gain only in the stomach area, so I'm betting she really is pregnant.
My What 12-03-2004, 11:52 PM WOW! Interesting thought and man would that be the biggest twist in the history of television if Claire were not pregnant. But wait, are you KIDDING ME! After I finish writing, this post I am going to search the Internet until I find proof of this whole women can have the belly of an eight-month pregnant woman and not really be pregnant. If this is true I may just faint. No way is this a possibility in "real" life. Now if JJ and Crew tried to pull this idea off then man I would give them some props. What a fantastic theory Mariners100. If you were like most people on this thread, you would definitely think I am being sarcastic but I really think Claire not being pregnant would be a terrific twist. I just want to make sure you understand I am not trying to be rude to you. Most people on this website think I only post on this website to start arguments when in fact I am just opinionated and enjoy debating. Welcome to the board.

Interesting thought - - except that she has felt the baby kick. And Jin and Charlie have also felt the baby kick. Would that go with the territory of a 'faux-pregnancy'?
Would be QUITE a twist, though!!
MadisonFire 12-05-2004, 08:50 AM I don't think so. Too much has been detailed about it. The test, the pyschic knew before she told him, his fear of the child within her, an adoptive couple would more than likely insists on medical record before shelling out $20,000 for the baby, Charlie and co have felt him kick, her early contractions. It would have been a good twist, but I think it would be unreasonably complicated to twist it now. Besides I think the baby is involved somehow, with the bigger picture.
Abney 12-05-2004, 10:48 AM except that she has felt the baby kick.* And* Jin and Charlie have also felt the baby kick.
That's what I was going to say. And it can't be that she's "faking" the kicks because Jin and Charlie have both had their own amusing responses to Claire's baby kicking.
jennifer81 12-05-2004, 06:56 PM Is that possible? wow. Her stomach is pretty big by now.
As for the whole Jack finding out thing, she wouldn't have demanded that Charlie to go get Jack if she wasn't pregnant eh.
But if she isn't...and its just another plot twist...I'm going to be very confused.
maryblue 12-05-2004, 08:19 PM It is possible, but I'm not sure her body would "fake it" to such an extent. I've heard of the opposite happening thought- woman not knowing they were pregnant until a few weeks before their due dates or when they go into labour.
desertislandgirl 12-06-2004, 04:46 PM I know it's possible - the body can stop having a period and the stomach can distend. I don't know how she'd fake the kicks, though. I mean, I know women can think a baby's kicking when it isn't really, but for it to be big enough for others to feel it, I doubt that.
Also, she seemed to really *not* want to be pregnant in the flashbacks, rather than willing herself to be.
Another thought - did anyone think it was odd that the psychic didn't suggest that she abort? I don't want to start a pro-life/pro-choice debate here, but it would seem that if it was a little Hitler inside her body, he might try to persuade her of that rather than put her on a plane crash... ???
telemelia 12-06-2004, 06:51 PM I really don't think that she isnt pregnant. It would seem like a letdown if that was the way they ended the plotline.
As far as the abortion thing goes, perhaps the baby is supposed to be a pivotal figure in the world. If taught to be good and moral, he will bring as much goodness to the world as he would bring evil if he were 'Raised by Another'. He could also be the only one able to prevent some big crisis, and thus we would need a good version of him.
The psychic would want her to raise him and bring about a positive change.

That goes along with my theory that the baby is powerful, and could do much good if raised with the right influences and not by someone who wants to use that power for their own agenda. I think the baby was too valuable to be aborted, which would also mean that one day they'll be rescued, maybe after the baby is safely raised...
pikameta 12-06-2004, 07:17 PM does anybody else think of Wyatt from Charmed... ??

Claire is definitely pregnant. The more interesting question is whether or not she is still pregnant with her own child.
There was an intriguing series of exchanges between Claire and Charlie in the first few episodes that hinted that Claire's baby may have died during the crash and that something took its place inside her.
With all this Claire's baby is evil stuff from the psychic, I wonder if whatever forces are behind the island have already taken the place of Clarie's baby and this might have something to do with the island's "agenda" (this could explain why "the others" are so interested in Claire's baby). I think this may ultimately have a major role in explaining why the flight "crashed" on the island in the first place. Definitely one of those higher-level questions that the show has not reached yet.
Trueogre 12-06-2004, 08:35 PM But the baby isn't either good or bad. The Psychic merely stated that Clair's good spirit will help the child on the right path. That's like with every mother...well almost. It seems that if Clair has the baby she has to be there for the child to develope into a good spirit like her. But if she dies, or gives up the child the force on the island will be a big factor into the development of the child. The child will definately be next generation, and whatever happens to this child in it's infancy will effect it's life somewhere in the future.
rayne 12-07-2004, 12:15 AM good points, all.
my only question is (regarding the possibility that Claire's baby dies during the crash):
what if the crash actually made it so that the evil-nasty-Daddy parts of the baby went away when it "died", leaving only the parts of the spirit given by Claire? I'm having a hard time verbalizing my thoughts, but hopefully you guys know what I mean.* or maybe life was given back to the baby via Jin (whose name in Korean means "treasure" or "truth", and in Japanese it actually means "kindness" or "tenderness"). Jin offered her the sushi which caused the baby to kick, after all.* just a thought...
