There is a large hole in the ground that looks suspiciously like a grave of some kind. It can be seen when Richard Alpert carries Ben to the Temple. I thought maybe they just used the same location as for the Purge victim's grave in which Ben shot Locke, but in the preceding shot Alpert takes a long, intent look at it. Could there be something to it?

I don't think it's necessarily the purge pit... I'm not convinced based on that picture. Could be something else.

I thought the *exact* same thing about the temple!!! It really did seem like it (and Alpert) just suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

*IF* that hole is the purge pit....which would make sense since it's so close to the barracks... and they wouldn't have wanted to drag all those bodies too far.... It means the temple definitely does move, since we've seen the pit a couple times now and haven't seen the temple near it before.... But... It seems like the DI would have stumbled upon the temple at some point if it was so close to the barracks... Makes me wonder if it does in fact move, like the cabin.

He's not looking down at the ground at the hole now is he. He is looking at his eyeheight to the left, where he's walking to - he's looking at the temple.

Maybe it's just another grave pit, where they put the army people perhaps?

obviously dharma vans got them quite far, depends how big the dharma territory is. does seem like everything is shrinking. especially as ben tells danielle, alex and karl to go to the temple, which was meant to be a good distance away.
main point, i dont think it's the purgehole and if it was then it shouldn't be special yet coz dharma aren't in it yet. my guess is that it's a cereberus vent. i agree with piperdox i thought he was looking through the bushes to the temple not at the pit. plus i think if it was massively important then they should've focused on it a little longer.

From those pics, I think Alpert was considering ending Ben's sad life by tossing him down the pit.
OR, it's a Smoky vent, and Richard decided that Ben was too important to give to Smokey and have Smokey "possess" him or whatever.

i first thought it was the hole from the hatch but i would quess the DI pit would make more sense or it's just a hole in the ground.

Also, kind of glad they only take a couple of minutes to walk through the jungle. Who wants to waste time on the show watching them walk through the jungle?
