View Full Version : Stop overdoing the Ben Baddy Music!
dhollmusik 04-10-2009, 10:42 AM Man, ever since the Ben Badboy Theme came back after Ben had throttled Locke in LaDoJB the producers have just been completely overcooking it.
You know, the music which has those 3 edgy notes to it to signify Ben is a badass (neh-neh-neh), we heard it when he first summoned Smokie in S4 and after throttling Locke...then it gave me goosepimps it was so well tuned into the scene:

Reminds me of the best of Final Fantasy music.
But the last few episodes they've been recycling it like a dozen times, it's losing its power and becoming its own caricature.
Like the smoke monster is in danger of becoming: what cheesy Dallas-style drama was that at the end?
Anyway, The Powers That Be: stop overcooking the music, please. It's becoming as bad as Season 3 was.
Use it sparely, it's beautiful.
snakey 04-10-2009, 10:44 AM I really, really think it was the Get Smart theme played in a slower cadence, for once I'm not being sarcastic.

Each character and character pairing has its own theme music. Once you become aware of one you tend to hear it everywhere-at least that is my experience. The first time I heard "Ben's/Others theme" was in TMBTC when a gas masked Ben walks into New Otherton with all the bodies lying on the ground. It is achingly beautiful I think in its entirety. Last time they played the whole theme was when Ben tells the story of Thomas to Jack which is why I think that story is more about Ben than about Jack.
I have to listen to the show a third time to really appreciate the music. When two characters interact, their themes interact too. I don't know of any TV show where I have ever paid attention to the music before. Expect much more of Locke's theme in the weeks to come. Ben is now Locke's lackey and I don't know if lackeys get their themes played lol.
onenil 04-12-2009, 05:49 PM I don't mind them making heavy use of Ben's theme during a Ben-centric episode! But I do agree that they should make very limited use of the Dharmacide version, as it is VERY powerful.
khopzilla 04-12-2009, 06:46 PM you know, I never really notice the music that much. Not just in this show, but in any tv show or movie. It really has to stand out (either be really good or really bad) for me to notice. I'm just too busy enveloped into the story.

Exactly. Even if you don't consciously recognize what's going on, it draws your mind back to the earlier young Ben scenes, and that's what you're thinking about.
I'm not prone to hyperbole -- or maybe I am, I don't know, but regardless -- as far as I'm concerned, Giacchino's work on this show is head and shoulders above anything that's ever done on TV.

I'm just too busy enveloped into the story.I think it's one of those elements that you don't necessarily need to notice explicitly, but which still has a profound impact on the total experience. The music geeks (& I say that in the most loving possible way ) are all over the details of how the themes are used & intertwine. While us normal viewers just assimilate it all as part of the total experience. Yes?
evanesco75 04-14-2009, 03:03 AM Well said, emmaAmythest. And as a music geek, I agree with you :) I for one think it's an amazing piece, since it can be terrifying one moment, and unbearably poignant the next.
Giacchino's a genius, and I have to say I love the concept of each character having their own music. Makes the experience more intense, for me. :)

It was used a lot in Man Behind The Curtain. Agree that it might be overkill.
Totally agree on it sounding like the Final Fantasy music sometimes.
xzeox 04-14-2009, 03:24 AM That's not the "Ben Baddy Music," it's his theme.
Who's centric episode was it again? Oh yeah, Ben's.
Get over it, both Sayid and Kate's centric episodes did the exact same thing this season.
It is by no means annoying.
Michael Giacchino is a genius as far as I'm concerned. The music pacing throughout the episodes every season (maybe with the exception of Season 2) have been absolutely fantastic.
The only reason you think it's losing it's "power" is because they have yet to play the theme as powerfully as they did in Season 3 or 4.
If they want to truly move you with the music, they will. No matter how many times you've heard it before.
khopzilla 04-14-2009, 05:18 AM ...oh, I in no way meant to imply that the music was only mediocre. It just gets buried under the story for me. Yes, it adds tension and emotion for me, it just doesn't get in the way. Now when I hear a familiar tune (downtown, make your own kind of music, come on everybody) it stands out.
