Faraday could be a stepfather (or just an alias).

Related question: Why does Daniel have an American accent when both his parents have English accents and he appears to have spent most of his adult life in Britain?

Obviously, Daniel was primarily among speakers of American English when he was young (up to the age of 12--accents don't change after that). Could have been on the island (most of the Hostiles have American accents; the diversity of their accents remains unexplained). Also could have meant he spent most of his childhood in the U.S. or Canada.

Same issue with Miles Straume--why is he not a Chang? We saw no indication that his mother ever remarried.

Maybe a lot of others changed their names like the jewish people...to survive (the purge ou the incident)!

Perhaps Eloise's maiden name was Faraday and she married a Hawking? It would be nice to have this explained though.

Perhaps its because the writers never planned on him being the son of Widmore, and thought it would just be cool if he was because it'd give them another chance to play dramatic music and have a shocking revelation. Its becoming increasingly obvious they're making this up as they go along.

i don't know, they said in a recent podcast that they introduced Miles with the idea that he was Chang's son in mind. that's why they were so insistent on getting Ken Leung as well.

I thought that maybe Eloise has Daniel while still a hostile, but not on the Island, and has someone take care of him or gives him up for adoption/puts him in foster care. But then, after shooting the future version of her son, she elects to leave the Island to spend time with him. Ultimately though, she can do nothing more than prepare him for his own death.

Anyway, in my scenario, I postulate that Daniel was RAISED BY ANOTHER, not an other. Dunh dunh dunh. (hence the different last name)

I've been wondering this too. Maybe he thought Michael Faraday was really cool and wanted an alias because his mom is so mean. :p Or perhaps that was Eloise's surname but she took an alias.

kietotheworld's 'Oops, we didn't think of this early enough' theory makes sense too. An explanation would be nice though. Same with the accent. Where was he born? Maybe they were living in the US when he was young and he didn't end up in England until he attended Oxford.

In the narrative, a reasonable explanation would be that Hawking never wanted Dan to know that Widmore was his father. So she lied to him about another man that knocked her up and she picked her favorite physicists who studied electromagnetism.

In the writer's room, they wanted a name to hint what was coming in the next season. Faraday seemed perfect.

Was he ever been called Faraday off the Island?
Because if he wasnt then its possible he did this for the same reason Micheal did, and that is to avoid being discovered. Actually, Micheal WAS the one who could expose him by telling his name to Ben. Ben doesnt seem to be liked by anyone, so both Hawking and Widmore have a reason to hide their son's identity from Ben...
It could also explain Ben's strange reaction to Desmond's telling him he's also come to see Daniel's mother, like he just made the connection.

That would make sense. Maybe Mr. Hawking was the "very clever fellow" who built the lamppost station.
