View Full Version : Changing the past to change the future.
sseguin613 05-07-2009, 07:19 AM This is total BS.
They claim if they change the past by preventing the incident, that the button won`t have to be pushed and the plane won`t crash.
But
By doing that they erase their history on the island.....
If so, then everything will happen as it was before since they won`t be there anymore to prevent the incident.
OBVIOUSLY, there will be some cheap reason as to why this won`t be the case, you would hope. Think of Back to the Future, 2nd movie where the timeline gets changed by Biff by driving the DeLorean back to 1955 to give himself the almanac, and Doc and Marty had to go back to then instead of slightly in the past to prevent him from stealing the DeLorean. This is a different scenario but in a way similar. Either way my argument above stands.
Elbonio 05-07-2009, 07:36 AM Personally I think by attempting to change the future they are actually ensuring it happens.
What if the incident never was going to happen, until they try and prevent it?
Chang wasn't going to tell his wife to leave him until he found out Daniel told him to do it. We know this always happened, so now we know it always happened because of Daniel's interfering.
It's very likely that by trying to prevent the incident they already know happens, they actually cause it in the first place.
All along they could have been the cause of the incident, simply by trying to stop it happening.
phorkster 05-07-2009, 07:37 AM By virtue of them preventing the "incident" via atomic bomb, they are preventing a whole lot of stuff from happening. Ultimately it is believed that if it works then there will be no button to push, no Desmond to not push it on time and no Flight815 crash.
Of course I believe in the WHH theory, so this could be something that has always happened, like Sayid shooting childBen and Jacks refusal to operate on him.
abbybaby 05-07-2009, 08:03 AM What bothers me is Jack saying "our plane lands safely in L.A." Even if they could prevent the plane from crashing on the island didn't the pilot say the plane was already 1000 miles OFF COURSE??? Even if the plane doesn't crash I don't think it could land safely in L.A.? Preventing the incident may prevent the plane from crashing, but what made it go that far off course in the first place??? Am I missing something here?

That's right. I am hoping that the writers don't allow the past to be changed, instead it is just being acted out in the way it always did. If anything gets changed, it's a new low.
loserboy 05-07-2009, 08:34 AM Well, even if the writers do allow the past/future to be changed, they've already established a very viable plot tool for the final season. They have already shown us that the "consciousness" can travel through time and retain memories of changed timelines. So it is possible that all of the people involved would have all of their memories of that time, in spite of it not ever "happening". Of course this brings up major philosophical and metaphysical arguments such as, "Is something real if only you have experienced it?" etc etc....
MichaelTheAngel 05-07-2009, 09:21 AM This is how it always happened.
The positive energy from the bomb will absorb much of the deadly negative energy from under the Swan. However, there will still need to be a protocol to release the remaining energy under the Swan. Radzinsky will think they need to take radiation absorbing shots as the Island is believed to be contaminated (but it's not due to Daniel's bomb).
Much like Desmond, our Losties will appear to die (at least to Richard) in a great explosion. However, like Desmond, they will wake up in their usual spots on Paradox Island in 2007/8.
merew 05-07-2009, 09:35 AM The entire season has held to the mantra that "what happens, happens" and that has always made sense. We are already viewing the future island events with Locke, so that timeline cannot change or be erased as it would be going against every time travel conceit professed by the producers. I hope they respect the fans too much to monkey with that.
