Anyone see the movie Equilibrium, where "Father" is a fictitious figurehead? Maybe Jacob is the same thing... really a council of the now old Losties in 2007 who hid after the Incident and created Jacob to manipulate the Others with Richard's help? That would explain why Richard sees Locke as a problem... and why he said that he saw them all die... he's covering up for them.

Locke used Jacobs name in 1954 to get Richards attention so Jacob has been around that long at least.

The Man Behind the Curtain, The Wizard of Oz.
A fake device to scare and rule everyone. Not exactly new! But fresh food fir thought after FTL, certainly.

I agree with Donga. There is a Jacob, but he is not the almighty to be feared as he has been made out to be. Locke was even feeling this way prior to his regeneration.

Maybe older Walt who time traveled back to pre-Dharma/pre-Others time? After all, he is special too.

He might be like the Dread Pirate Robert. He is retired and has passed on the title to someone else.

Equilibrium was a good movie, not very original, but entertaining nonetheless. I doubt TPTB would be as opaque as that...

p.s. I hated how "the underground" was actually underground...
