Omg some people need to go either watch or rewatch season 3... It's a bit irritating how everyone is so clueless about it... white smokey isn't a theory, Locke saw it in season 1 walkabout and then talk about it to Eko in season 3 episode 5 - the cost of living. If you haven't watched any seasons prior to season 5 I suggest you do there are some really important facts in it.

Locke said what he saw was beautiful, Eko replied, "That is not what I saw".
Another theory that "Esau" is smokey and wanted to cultivate John to be his "loophole" is just as, if not more viable, than your theory.

Locke says: I saw a very bright light, it was beautiful.

Sure. He can see that in smokey.
Plus, when Locke sees smokey in the season 1 finale, he is more than willing to go with it.

While I believe there could be a white Smokey (or both Jacob and the man in black can control Smokey at different times) your reasoning doesn't mean that there is definitely a white Smokey. As afterthegoldrush mentioned, the man in black could have been controlling Smokey when Locke saw it in Season 1, discovered he could use Locke to kill Jacob when Smokey "scanned" him and let Locke live because he needed him.
