View Full Version : Charlie was weak.
Redemption_Isle 04-25-2005, 06:17 PM In DriveShaft and before, Charlie was weak and a follower. He abandoned his own beliefs and started using drugs. Has he changed now? Was the shooting of Ethan an evidence of strength? That is was he really protecting Claire and the others? Or was it evidence of weakness, he so scared of Ethan personally that he couldn't bear for him to live?

As much as it pains me to defend Charlie, I think he thought it was a display of strength, even though it was a monumental display of stupidity. Since he at least thought he was doing something helpful and constructive, we must give him at least grudging credit for trying to change. Even if he going about it all wrong.
Peach 04-25-2005, 08:26 PM I think it's a little deeper than that. Especially given the flashback, he felt like a complete loser that he hadn't been able to pull himself up and show Lucy (was that her name) he could take care of her. Then Claire counted on him to take care of her, and he couldn't stop Ethan from killing her. I think shooting Ethan was Charlie's way of trying to show that he COULD take care of someone- whether it was actually a stupid thing to do or not!

I don't think it was a sign of strength or weakness. I myself think it was temporary insanity. We all know what Charlie and Claire suffered at the hands of Ethan and it was intense. No maybe some would think 'snapping' as a sign of weakness but I personally don't.
Has he changed? Somewhat. He's no longer going on and on about his band like he did. He cares about someone other than himself. He has gone through physical withdrawl to drugs but his emotional withdrawl is still going on and he has had no rehab counselor to help him out so he's just sort of winging it and acting like most newly clean former substance abusers.
HelloFromVenus 04-25-2005, 10:57 PM Here is a big HELL YEAH to Charlie for surviving an addiction.
I spent a long time with someone who was going down the same path as Charlie, and I can tell you that in the withdrawl periods, he was a whole hell of a lot worse than I've ever seen Charlie, and I've had the cracked ribs and everything else to prove it.
Blamo 04-26-2005, 03:52 PM Killing Ethan was the prudent thing to do, not weak. He had the opportunity to act decisively to protect his own life and others, and he took it. I think it was smart, not stupid.
If someone managed to lynch you despite your best efforts to defend yourself, wouldn't you be afraid of that person?
I hate being in the position of defending Charlie, because he really is too weak to admire, but I like that he shot Ethan.
peanutbutter101 04-26-2005, 07:06 PM I don't necessarily it was a sign of weakness. As many have said before, he thought he was doing something constructive and he thought it was just. It was simply retarded but washing up on an island and temporarily (or permantly) do that. I mean, look at Danielle. She killed EVERYONE that was on the boat with her when she got washed up. Was she weak? Or was (is) just an insane woman who has never adjusted to the island.
Charlie-Survivor 05-04-2005, 05:21 PM HOw dare you disrespect Charlie! HE WAS AND NEVA WILL BE WEAK!!!! >:(
peanutbutter101 05-08-2005, 09:59 AM Woah :o Calm down there. It's just an opinion. The starter of this thread has the right to express it. You don't necessarily have to agree with it but you might as well respect it. Because if you just blurt out
HOw dare you disrespect Charlie! HE WAS AND NEVA WILL BE WEAK!!!! >:(
it will just start a big fight between the Charlie fans and the Non-Charlie fans, and, if the Charlie fans biggest defense is that "we all love Charlie/Dom", then we will most likely lose the argument. So let's try to keep things civil here. ;D
elfdream 05-08-2005, 10:28 AM I think we could take a page out of the book of the Shannon defenders and start a thread on 'the defense of Charlie' .
peanutbutter101 05-08-2005, 07:36 PM Yeah we should. And we have to make guidelines as well. You must refrain from using "Charlie is right because I adore him so much so therefore he is never wrong! Neva!" :lol2:
SandraSpalding 05-15-2005, 10:01 AM let's see how strong/weak he is when he discovers the copious amounts of heroin on the plane.

D***! You win on that one... Or maybe not. My cousin's theory is:
Claire finds his little Mary statue, including the drugs, and convinces him that he has promised to care for Claire and TurnipHead and he can do it without drugs. He should do it without the drugs. Mindpower over willpower.
Yes, I know the baby's name is Aaron, but I like "TurnipHead" better.
lost_aussie_gal 06-02-2005, 04:59 AM I say the statue was empty............................. Well I dam well hope it is.................I mean there is a chance It could be isnt there? :-\
dgjordan 06-02-2005, 05:17 AM I say the statue was empty............................. Well I dam well hope it is.................I mean there is a chance It could be isnt there?* :-\
I hope it was empty, too. Doesn't really matter if it was, though, because Charlie knows where the plane is and can easily go back for more. Braving the jungle won't be a problem if he is trying to get another fix.

Why would charlie carry an empty statues? i think he took some of the heroin and if its gone he will go back and get some again ;D

Charlie was maybe a little weak, and he didn't really want to be a follower. He did give in to Liam, though, and continued to be in the band when he knew he shouldn't be, and he stopped being a follower when he realized what Liam was doing. But then he started being one again, doing what everyone else was doing - sleeping with girls, doing drugs - and he thought he was being stronger, especially when he told Liam he didn't want help to get over his addiction.
Yes, I think Charlie has changed a lot. I think he sees Claire in a different way than all the other girls he had been with. He just seems more friendly and more with it.
The shooting of Ethan wasn't 'evidence of strength.' He was merely wanting to protect Claire, and he even said it. And I think he meant it. Charlie was a very selfish person, and I think it was a huge turning point when he did something for someone else...like saving Jack from the cave in, shooting Ethan to protect Claire etc etc.
Shrooms 09-02-2005, 08:22 PM He was, but god he was a druggie.
Kimo's_LOST_in_Hawaii 09-28-2005, 03:18 AM Charlie always irritated me.
His immaturish... selfish attitude just came off wrong to me.
I think he will totally do the drugs. He doesnt seem smart - i mean strong- enough to say no.
When he shot ethan i lost what little respect i had left for him...
Idk... he always seems like such a small person... like not short, but just no presence, like a little irritating puppy i'd like to kick.
So yeah.
I like Dom tho...
But i hate charlie.
So this is the 'im just not into u' thread... so dont kill me now :P
Bradislost 10-05-2005, 04:18 PM I hope he gets caught with the Drugs...... HE NEEDS HELP!!!!!!
Can you say intervention??

I won't kill ya... Though I am a Charlie supporter!
Hell though... I would have kicked him too... For fun though... he would kick me back then I'd chase him through the woods... But I love the naughty guys who need help and are just so cute...
funkycherrygirl 10-23-2005, 05:34 PM Although I know this is a thread dedicated to people who don't like Charlie and I don't think it makes sense for people to defend him here as you have the chance to talk about loving him in the countless other threads - I do have to say that I think Charlie acted on impulse to protect Claire and that doesn't make him weak just misguided. And if he wasn't in Lost then it wouldn't be the programme it is and that goes for all the characters. You have to see the big picutre - you may not like him but you wouldn't be able to watch/understand the show without him because he links into the story lines of not just him and Claire but of everyone else - as you can tell when you see how they bumped into each other and interact before they were on the plane (e.g. where charlie is in the lift when hurley runs past on his way to the airport.)

Quick question:
If you are a Charlie fan, then why are you posting in this specific forum?
