I recently watched The Brig and I was thinking...
Do you think there is any connection between the killing of Anthony Cooper, being that Locke HAD to do it, and...
-- Jacobs Death?
-- How Jacob and Jacob's Nemesis can't kill each other
Or is Anthony Cooper a version of Jacob's Nemesis even??
The point is, do you think their is any significance to killing Anthony Cooper besides it being Lockes test?
Hmm interesting. Ben didn't think Locke would do it, he just wanted to humiliate John in front of all of the Others to prove that he's not some awesome, special up-and-coming leader. Especially with Ben considering Locke a big threat. Since Richard helped get Cooper dead, perhaps there is more significance. But maybe Richard just wanted Locke to succeed - so he could eventually become leader, instead of Ben. According to Richard, Ben is just "wasting time with novelties like fertility problems."

Yeah as the episode went on I was a little more convinced their was no significance. Then I watched the next episode and saw how Ben murdered HIS own father. Kinda like how Locke had to kill his.
Also Interesting

Agreed. Fits with the season four and five storyline with Alpert and Locke about Locke becoming the Others' leader. And there's the nice symbolism with Ben having killed his father, as Dan23X mentioned.

I wonder if it really "counts" for whatever ritual is going on, considering it was Sawyer who ended up doing it.

Do you think it's an actual ritual? Like, an Other has to kill their father to become leader, or something along those lines? I always assumed it was an informal thing.

An informal thing like, Ben came up with it on the fly? Or kind of a family tradition "eh, we always kill our dads before we become the next leader"?

As far as I am concern the fact that JL did not kill his own father personally he did not make that certain gesture where Sawyer did. Ben was only fooled into thinking JL killed his father but in actuallity he didnt. So really, was JL ever really one of the "Others" as Ben did by killing his own father. I dontthink he wa sever the Leader just thought he was and RA should know this because he was the one that showed how JL can have his father killed but not actually do it himself. To me Sawyer is the one who made the committment where JL didnt
