View Full Version : 16 years ago....yes what year?
-calypso- 10-17-2009, 05:54 AM Ok, i just realized that in 2004 when Ben/Locke moved the island, ben said to Hurley that the cookies were here for 15 years....so we can deduce the island was previously moved 15 years ago.....in 1989.
We know that the island is moving in space but also in time or at least the people on the island. So we know that after being moved the island was in 1989 but what was the year on the island before being moved to 1989 ....we don't know for sure!!!! It's obviously not 1989!!!
So Rousseau distress signal....we know that it was 16 years ago....one year before the island was moved! But we don't know for sure what year it was!!!! it was probably not 1988 as we thought!
We saw a lot of things coming from World War II on island...so maybe the island was in the 1940s before she was moved?
jane_eire 10-22-2009, 10:23 AM 16 years ago, an Island was born...
Soon it will pass into the mists...

I have to say...this is very interesting calypso. Remember when we heard the radio transmission of Glenn Miller? ;)

Not sure I'm getting your deduction. Is it not possible that the island wasn't moved fifteen years ago, and there just happens to be can of crackers that've been sitting there all that time? I'm not sure how you've deduced that a move had to have happened in 1989. But I'm all ears...

Of course it's possible, in LOST we're never sure....but the scene is pointless if Ben only said that to say that! It must mean something more! And they're here to move the island....so my deduction is....if they were here fifteen years ago it was probably to move the island too!
LBK who is Glenn Miller?

I had the same thought about the crackers...15 years ago someone put them there. I don't think the island had to move to get crackers.
2lamama 10-22-2009, 07:59 PM So -- are you saying that Rousseau's team actually came from a different era (not the 1980's)? Then wouldn't Rousseau think it was odd that 815 crashed in 2004?
I do find it odd that there are a lot of old 1950s type songs played during several flashbacks (mostly Kate's) that I can recall and also Juliette's I think.

The clue is that the partly-eaten stack pack of saltines was still good. The choice of explanations is that the crackers had moved in time, or that they had simply been planted there very recently. I know the explanation I'm choosing.

I strongly doubt those were a clue to an era, rather than being individually clues or simply artistic choices. And do you think I couldn't turn on the radio now and some time during the next few days hear Glenn Miller's orchestra? I usually listen weekly to music recorded even earlier than that on The Big Broadcast, Rich Conaty's program on WFUV, "music for the old and the old at heart". If I want still earlier, I could listen on WFMU to The Antique Phonograph Radio Hour or Thomas Edison's Attic (alternating weeks).

Thunderstorm 10-23-2009, 01:35 AM Also, "15 years" is easily seen as a figure of speech that could mean anything from 12-17 years or more or less.
Considering Ben used the mirror in the box, (to signal Richard and the Others) even knew where it was to begin with and it had Dharma crackers in it, it's reasonable to suggest it was placed there post-Purge (1992). Which would mean 12 years or less. That is, assuming they didn't regularly nab food from Dharma before they moved in to the Barracks. Of course, Ben was still in Dharma up until 1992, so he could have put them there himself. Anyways, I don't think there is any big clue here.

Glenn Miller was a famous big band orchestra leader and composer during the 30's and 40's.
From the Long Con...
Back at the campfire, Hurley is reading a manuscript called Sayid walks up with the radio and a pole. Together, they tune it past Danielle's transmission, and find a clear signal from a classic jazz station playing Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n92ATE3IgIs). Sayid tells Hurley that, because signals from that frequency bounce off the ionosphere, the music could be coming from anywhere. Hurley responds, "Or any time... just kidding, dude."

Yes Suds...but you aren't on the island ;)
I realize that radio wave transmissions never actually die...but I've been thinking, what if when we see Richard in his long hair and pirate shirt...we actually have seen him in another time period without being aware of it? What if somehow they've been moving through time all along (think Hurley bird). Even crazier...did Rousseau actually remember Sayid ...?
JACK: [to Sayid] What the hell was that?
SAYID: He is one of them.
JACK: Yeah? Did he tell you that?
SAYID: No.
JACK: Then how do you know?
SAYID: Because I know. He is one of them.
JACK: I think that Rousseau thought that about you once, Sayid. If I'm not mistaken she strapped you down, she shocked you, all because she thought you were one of them.
(Referring to this scene...)
SAYID: Please just listen to me. I keep telling you I don't know who Alex is. I'm a survivor of a plane crash. I found a wire on the beach, I followed it. I thought it might have something to do with the transmission we picked up on our receiver. A recording, a mayday, with a French woman repeating on a loop for 16 years.
DANIELLE: Si quelqu'un m'entend, je vous en prie, venez à notre aide... Il les a tués. Il les a tous tués...[1] [coming out of the shadows] 16 years. Has it really been that long?
SAYID: You.
DANIELLE: You just happened to hear my distress call? I know what you are. [She knocks him out with the butt of a rifle].
later...
DANIELLE: So, you heard my transmission -- came looking for me, for answers?
SAYID: I didn't know you were alive.
DANIELLE: Still lying.
SAYID: I'm not lying.
DANIELLE: Lies!
and later...
SAYID: Your distress signal? The message I heard, you said, "It killed them all."
DANIELLE: We were coming back from the Black Rock. It was them. They were the carriers.
SAYID: Who were the carriers?
DANIELLE: The others.
SAYID: What others? What is the Black Rock? Have you seen other people on this island?
DANIELLE: No, but I hear them. Out there, in the jungle. They whisper. [Long Pause.] You think I'm insane.
SAYID: I think you've been alone for too long.

Awesome...you're actually making sense to me for once. :) True, they seemed to think those crackers were pretty edible, rather than spitting them out as I would have. Then again, I'm not starving on an island for months...but still. You might have something there.
LadybirdKate 10-23-2009, 10:29 AM That's a good catch with the crackers Robert...and on that note...do you think they were planted? Keeping in mind that the Dharma Ranch dressing has an OPENED shelf life of 44 million years. :)

Among people where even a child slips loaded dice into a backgammon game, I think everything on this show is planted!
