Agreed - this certainly opens up that question again.

Perhaps the body stealing as mentioned by the Smocke in I believe the Smocke episode, or maybe when he was talking with Kate, is how kid Jacob, who seems more like the man in black we know, comes to look like the man in black.

He steals his brothers form in order to feel the kind of love "Mother" had for him. To be the one loved most. maybe, idk, epsidoe is like eating a steak with no bite.
