I'm confused by having both Caucasian and European. Couldn't those terms be used interchangeably?

Hiram
12-07-2004, 03:42 PM
katejones if you were talking about the UK I would agree. But, I think of European as including France, Spain, Swiss, Italian, etc.

If I were to list all of those we would have a much longer list. But I will give it more thought. Thanks!

OK katejones, check it out now ! ! ! If that isn't a list I don't know what is.

ummm, maybe English should be changed to British or United Kingdom, to inlude the Scots, Welsh....not sure if Ireland is considered part of it or on it's own.) Also, Oriental is what we used to call Asian, but I believe it's now considered politically incorrect to use Oriental. Asian could also include India (considered to be south asian)

Prncssleia
12-07-2004, 04:33 PM
Asian refers to people, Oriental refers to objects (rugs, lamps, etc.)

BTW, I think it has gotten a lot more confusing...for demographic purposes, usually there is Caucasian, African American, Asian, Hispanic, etc. and does not include countries of origin...Like I posted to caucasian, but now it's been changed to English (of which I am not) My great great grandparents (on both sides) were from Germany and Austria a little of the Irish mixed in... I do not consider myself to be European, though...

I appreciate all the input. I knew this list would either be too long or too short or down right
have some wrong stuff in it so I think I will make these changes and restart the poll.

After much constructive input from several people made several changes to the list
to make it hopefully more user friendly as they say. However, during the course of this
it was necessary to restart the poll, so if you voted please vote again. Thank you!

That's what I meant that there should be less choices, instead of more. I just thought those of European decent are considered Caucasian so I didn't understand why there were both choices. Sorry Hiram Abif! Apparently my comment made you do lots of extra work!

no, you were right katejones....I was thinking about it in the shower and was going to come back and post something similar. There was a little confusion there between nationality and ethnic background, which aren't one and the same.

FlarnChef

Excuse me Mr Hiram, sir........Jewish is a religion not an ethnicity. There are Jews of many ethnic types, including the Falasha (Black Jews of Ethiopia) and Sephardic(Jews from the Mediterranean region including Spain)

This is sooo politically un correct, too! ::) Looking at your list.... a person could actually be Hispanic, Jewish AND South American!

A better ask would be of family roots:
N.Africa
S.Africa
N America
S America
Australia
British Isles
China
Indonesia
E Europe
W Europe
Japan>>>>>>> and so forth OR
just looking for the simple census:
Caucasian
Africian American
Hispanic
Native American >>> and so on....

marbalbc
12-07-2004, 07:13 PM
or because it's impossible to list all countries....

Native North American
Native Central American
Native South American
European
Asian (includes India)
African
Native Australian
etc. based on continent.

Ethnic background is very different from nationality. Ethnic background is based more on race, isn't it?
Hiram, for all his best intentions, has crossed them over.

Hiram
12-07-2004, 07:22 PM
Yes he has, darn that Hiram! What he set out to do was more than a simple are you
white, black, yellow, brown, etc. but from where do you find your family roots if you
know them.! If that makes any sense.

Umm could you possibly change it to African American instead of African. I mean I'm African American, Native American and White but I and I don't really classify myself as one or the other. In your poll I chose African, but it kinda threw me for a loop because I have never been to Africa. I know you said primary but if you are mixed its hard to chose. Thanks!

Hi Hiram!!

Hmmm... I'm of mixed racial descent. Here's what I am:

1/2 Mexican (Mexican Indian and Spanish mixed with Scottish and possibly Moorish)
1/2 German Norwegian (mixed with French, Irish, Welsh and British)

I identify myself as Latina, not Hispanic. Hispanic is an adjective used to describe things, like food, language, land, etc. Not people. Latino/Latina signifies a place of origin and a people. Just like Oriental is an adjective that describes food, etc. and Asian signifies a place of origin and a people.

I learned in college about the origins of the word Hispanic, and ever since, I can't use it without it feeling like a slap in my face. Here's what I learned, in case you are interested. In the 1800s, California and the US southwest used to be part of Spain. In 1810, Mexicans kicked Spain out and took over the rule of Mexico and the southwest. During this period (between 1823 and 1845) known as the rancho period, many Mexicans were wealthy, educated landowners in the southwest. In 1843, a Native American found gold and showed it to Sutter, who consequently took credit for the find and sent word back east. Lots of pioneers started getting gold fever and moved themselves and/or their families to the southwestern states. The land still belonged to Mexico until the pioneers (in conjunction with some rich Californios who were unhappy with Mexican rule) started a revolt in 1845. The Mexican American War started and was ended in 1848 by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ceded almost a 1/2 of Mexican territory to the United States. The Treaty also guaranteed the rights of property, language, religion to the Californios who chose to remain in the now United States. With the gold rush of 1849, lots of pioneers moved into California and started squatting on rancho land. They would literally pitch a tent and stake a claim on Mexican-owned land and then the ranch owner would have to take the white pioneer to court in order to try and remove them. Many many ranch owners lost their land this way in the mid to late 1800s. During this time, Native Americans had no rights and were basically regarded as the lower class. The white pioneers would characterize the ranch owners as Native American, calling them "Indians", and in order to prevent losing their rights (as they would if indeed they were identified as Indians), they started denying their heritage. They started saying "we're not Mexicans. We're Spanish. We're Hispanic."

It came out of fear and self-hatred, and I will NEVER ever ever identify myself as Hispanic again. I am very proud of my roots, and of my Mexican Indian roots in particular. I would never deny my heritage.

Thus ends the lesson on "why Gia HATES the word Hispanic".

Hiram

Gia I understand what you are saying.* I settled on the term Hispanic because that
seemed to be the most common one used in the censuses. Also, I do not see it as a derogatory
term at all.

If I understand your description of your ethnic background, it sounds as if you may not in fact be majority Latina.

I have a similar problem: I share my ancestry with the Scott, Irish, as well as Germans.
So what does that make me?
Euro trash? Just kidding! I originally wanted to separate the UK from Western Europe. But I got a good bit of negative feedback.

But, that is neither here nor there, this poll is all about how you find your Primary Family Heritage!
I edited the first post in an effort to clear this up. I sudjested going with your current generation Primary Heritage
or choosing, none of the above.

I am and will consider your suggestion. I can tell how strongly you feel about it! In the mean time I
would suggest making a vote and then refer back to the Topic later tonight to see if I have been able
to make a satisfying change for you. You can change your vote I believe.

Wow, interesting. When I first saw this topic, I was afraid that there were going to be a lot of angry posts, but it's so nice how couteous everyone is.

Anyway, I think this poll is interesting. And, Hiram (if I may call you Hiram), I'm really glad that you went more specific than the standard "Black, white, latino / hispanic, asian" choices. I've always thought those categories were a little too broad to say anything about. Then again, as you've seen the problem comes up that we are in a melting pot. I've known quite a few people whose backgrounds were extremely complicated.

In any case, it's an interesting sociological study. :) And very brave of you, if I may say so.

Yeah, but the sample size is pretty small.

I remember reading on the Nielson reports or something similar how the show was much more popular outside of NY and LA. Or at least NY, because I live there, and I was pretty surprised that it was NOT the top show. Anyone looked at where people are from in the US yet?

ok... typically I am not the type to bring up a negative issue, especially in a message board forum such as this one, but I have one teensy complaint about this poll (and practically every other type of form that asks this question) - there's no option for Asian-American. In this particular poll you have Euro-Asian, but not Asian-American. Every poll I've ever seen that asks this question always says "choose one" and this has always bothered me. I typically put down Asian, since I am half Chinese, but I am also half caucasian American, and must admit I look way more Caucasian than Chinese. So I typically can't stand polls like this that make you choose just one option or don't have an option like Asian-American on it.

oops... sorry... didn't mean to rant... just had to get that off my chest... :-[

Hiram
12-18-2004, 02:33 AM
Well, zia what I was looking for was your family background. Not really your current generations place on the list.
Like I am caucasion, but I would much rather have been able to break it down as my family comes from
Scotland, Ireland, and the Germanic peoples. But the limits of the length of a workable list made that difficult
to do. So. since most caucasions have UK or West European backgrounds I left it as it is. I would rather you chose
"none of the above" than not cast a vote, because that would show in the final analysis the short comings of the list.

Hiram
12-28-2004, 05:47 PM
At this point in the poll I am very surprised that there has been only one vote in the African-American category!

I know that this cannot represent an accurate demographic. Come on out and post or please let me know
why you may be resisting.

Thanks,

This is actually a hard survey for me to answer, as it's defined in the thread. I'm a"white" Christian [by dint of parents being Christian more than my own beliefs, which are more spiritual in nature] male but, I don't like limiting myself to color or religion. I have European ancestry (German, Irish and Welsh (Possibly English, Scottish and Spanish). However, aside from an intense interest in my family history, I don't really identify too much with that background. What I believe myself to be, more than anything, is a Southerner. I was born and raised in the Great State of Georgia and that has impacted my way of thinking about myself more than anything else.

Hey Hiram:

How about adding "scandinavian" in your list?

I am myself of both norwegian and briton origin.
My mother comes from the western region of France, which are known as "briton".
The britons descend from the celtic people. (ref: The story about Asterix and Obelix)
Since the celtics and the vikings had alot of contacts, I consider myself as a scandinavian primarly. I am going to live in Iceland in about five years from now.
