ok, it's no secret, I love me some Sawyer, especially when he gets all snarky and southern and name calling... normally I just giggle and move on, in fact I did in this case, BUT I was over on anOther thread responding to a thought when this just CAME to me like a bolt of Southern Baptist Preacher's Daughter lightening!!!

If I have heard it once, I have heard it a million times (southern exaggeration, ha), with passionate flare and in a distinct southern evangelist accent -- "all Satan can do is tell you about your past, he'll twist the truth till all you see are lies about Whose you are and who you are meant to be... but when Satan tries to remind you of your past, you just remind him of his future!!!" haha, anyway, it means he can't see the future (even though he knows his own fate) or read people minds or intentions, all he can do is remind us of our past to keep us feeling guilty and full of shame and ineffective - The Great Accuser

Kind'a sounds like the Ghost of Christmas Past/Flock/Smokey... no?

the poster on the other thread was saying that Smokey can read people's thoughts, and I said...

hmmm... do we know this to be fact? I thought he can only see images from one's past... correct me if I am wrong, but I think maybe he can only show us the past

so A) is that true? the facts we have to date about Smokey - has he done more than shown people their pasts? Eko's story specifically comes to mind

and B) thoughts? especially in relation to Flocke's symbolic archetype and "future"?

C) Snarky Sawyer>Mopey Sawyer.

Hmmm...interesting. I like the idea of Smokey/Flocke/MIB not knowing the future and the whole trickery aspect. The question for me is what does Sawyer think? Is he a believer (I don't think so), is he going to try to con Flocke, or is he just skeptical and playing along at this point?

i was just thinking, that if true, it serves as further proof that Flocke IS the bad guy, since some people are still uncertain

Not necessarily. The OP's connection to the devil has nothing to do with the statements he made about the limitations of Flocke's abilities. The quote he uses made him think of the idea, but other than that, it has no bearing on his being good or evil.

oh, actually, I am the OP, and I'm a she :)

and I guess I should have connected those dots more clearly, guess I assumed that conclusion would be made... cause that was the point I was making -- Smokey's limitations serve as more character proof that he the ultimate Bad Guy

Intriguing.

Could we take the analagy a little further back in time?

Smokey is Epithemeus (afterthought)
Jacob is Prometheus (forethought)

not gonna lie, had to look this up (embarrassed) but yeah, I mean they would definitely fit into those characters too... for others, like me, who didn't know:

In Greek mythology, Epimetheus (Greek: Ἐπιμηθεύς) ("hindsight", literally "afterthought," but in the manner of a fool looking behind, while running forward) was the brother of Prometheus ("foresight", literally "fore-thought"), a pair of Titans who "acted as representatives of mankind" (Kerenyi 1951, p 207). They were the inseparable sons of Lapetus, who in other contexts was the father of Atlas. While Prometheus is characterized as ingenious and clever, Epimetheus is depicted as foolish. - Wikipedia

but what REALLY jumps out at me here is their dad's name Lapetus!!! As in Pilot FRANK Lapidus!?!?!

I was just rewatching while reading posts and I was here when James say's the line I think started the long con. the last scene when MiB asks him if he wants to go with him and James says H*ll yes. He's made up his mind that he's being fed the same line he used to give people. It takes a con to know a con. He's right now the recon man..
