I think Kate will be a key player in the way things play out in the end.
The one thing on my mind, is that she's # 51. An even scale sits at 50/50. Possibly being number 51 means that one of her actions will ultimately be the one that tips the scale, resulting in their reaching their fate/destiny.
Any thoughts? My apologies if this idea has been previously posted.

I haven't seen that before, but I like it!
I really like that idea. It would explain why she was on the wheel and not the cave. Perhaps the cave is where the candidates are listed and the lighthouse is where all the people who need to come to the island are listed. Even if they aren't candidates, their presence on the island is still important. Kate might not be a replacement, but she still needs to be there to tip the scales.

She was on the cave wall, we just didn't get shown it.
If you watch the first video on the following link (WARNING: there are spoilers in the video!) http://spoilerslost.blogspot.com/2010/03/lost-tv-interview-paley-fest-interviews.html then you'll see Carlton Cuse confirm this.
I like this idea. I never saw 51 as a random number. I think people have been so obsessed with the 6 numbers that they think every other number has no significance.
I like this theory. It makes sense especially she is one of those touched by Jacob which automatically means there is more to her story as far as the myth.
I find it the height of negligence that Kates name was allegedly on the wall but due to some editing faux pas, we did not get shown it. Does it mean Cuse and Lindelof dont get shown the final copy? Surely not!
What it has revealed however is that the revelation of the names on the cave, maybe does not have as much significance as some have given it. It probably served the purpose that the scene was for. For us to see those that MIB or Jacob had chosen as "replacements" and whether we saw Kates name on it was neither here nor there.
The reveal of her name on the Lighthouse wheel was also subtle. So maybe we are deliberately being led not to pay too much attention to Kates number only to have it be a great turning "tool" at some point down the line, then we are supposed to go "oh wow. Lost is great".

Hmm, good to know. Thanks.

Excellent theory!
Maybe the real reason she is 'born' to run...is that
SHE is The Candidate.
