Does the announcement of a Lost Encyclopedia that will supposedly answer every question quell what fears you have about loose ends?

Personally, it does. I trust Darlton will put all necessary answers in this book. And I had this idea for a while, so I wasn't very surprised by its announcement.

I can't say yet until details emerge, however it does ease my mind slightly. While it does sound good that it's a full collaboration with ABC, maybe we will get some answers to things not revealed in the show. Too soon to tell.

Hmmm, Walt seems to be missing from the cover.

When was this announced?
I thought Darlton said they had no interest in visiting Lost again after the show ended? More of their tomfoolery?

I think something like this had to come out, but I have to wonder if it will address things we never got to see on the show, or if it will really only be like Lostpedia is, and just cover all the stuff we've seen in detail.

Can somebody post more info on it?

Nothing more than how long it is and what it's meant to cover. I'm just hoping that it covers all the mythology, not just what we've seen.

I think it'll just be a guide to characters, etc. I doubt it will reveal anything that isn't revealed in the show.

It says Darlton will write the foreward, but it doesn't indicate they will actually write the contents. If it's by the same people who put together those recap shows, no thanks. This just seems like another way to make money. If they wanted to put in more answers, add a few more episodes in the last season and film us the answers. :ohwell:

Sounds like something similar to the Star Trek Enycylopedia that came out years ago with character bios and entries of tech, organizations etc. It looks like it's coming from the writers of Lost Magazine.

I voted "Let me read it first" before drawing any conclusions.

I'm actually a little disappointed that it might be necessary to purchase an "encyclopedia" in order to fully understand the show. Shouldn't resolving all the unanswered questions be the top priority with the show's producers, and be done in the show itself, and not some optional "encyclopedia"?

This will be cool as a coffee table book, but I don't think it's going to have neccessary information or anything.

Hmmm, Walt seems to be missing from the cover.

But it is released on his birthday, so...

How do you figure? Real Walt's birthday? Or the actor?

I always thought that there would be various commentary type books written after the show was done, and various people will "explain" things or give their own interpretation of things. We're likely to get multiple explanations for things with the audience left to ponder which explanation is "correct" or at least "more likely."

But a book with lots of tidbits about details would actually be kinda fun to read and then go back and watch the episodes related to those tidbits. I'm game. I'll have to go to the link and read about the book and watch for it.

How do you figure? Real Walt's birthday? Or the actor? The character Walt. Remember the scene when Walt asks Michael "When's my birthday?" trying to make a point about Michael not knowing anything about him.

Michael answers "August 24th. When's mine?" Walt is silent

After reading the description, I think the book will be a "must have" for any loyal Lost fan. I pre-ordered ours this morning

@WingedOne - Thanks for the tip :)

I am fully just following the crowd and would have to wait and see before making an opinion, if its made by ABC then no way, if the LOST creative team make it then possibly, if a disgruntled staff member makes it then absolutely.

The authors of the LOST Encyclopedia are Tara Bennett (aka Tara DiLullo) and Paul Terry, both of whom write for the official LOST Magazine and work for Titan. They probably had access to just about everyone within the LOST family, including our dear Greggory, to make sure the book is complete and accurate.

Because there is one thing we ALL know about LOST fans - we're EXTREMELY anal retentivedetail-oriented, and will be picking this book apart looking for every tiny discrepancy. I for one can't wait to get my hands on it... red pen at the ready, eh Gregg? ;)

I'm with you...I would love to read something from the original LOST crew regarding what the explanations for some of the Season 1 stuff was back in Season 1...not what the current team has decided it will be.

I'm pretty sure the main creators are the same.

What I really want is the Show production bible that shows the general concept that they've had from the beginning. Maybe see if there ever was a list of "The Rules".

I remember them saying that Adam & Eve would be something that would show they had planned the ending form the way beginning.

In a poll on Dark UFO where one of the options is touted to be correct, (I' don't want to know until they show it but I looked at the like 14 options.)

4 possibilities: (spoiler fonted even though they are only 2 of 14 options, not at all confirmed)

Jacob's mother & father.
MiB and His Mother
Character's we haven't met yet
Jacob and his mother, (though this would involve/ another alternate timeline)
Would indicate that what we're seeing now has been planned all along.

of course if Jate, Pesmond, Rosard, or Sin time travel again and die in the cave it would
also indicate an early plan. Though now that Hugo suggested it already, I'm thinking probably it won't be the case.

Are you talking about the one that included pull out blue prints of the Enterprise? My brother has that!

I voted that I'll reserve judgment until I read it. I'm really hoping it deals with all the mythology and questions left unanswered when the series ends.

eta...would be cool if it included blueprints to the island and the stations, etc!

I'd really enjoy reading something like this coming from Lost writers, since the show emanated from the collaboration of all their creative minds. But knowing that I could buy and browse through it at the end of the season doesn't quell my fears that a great many loose ends will be left dangling in the production. It's kind of like reading a classic in the author's own words, and then reading the Cliff's notes. Cliff's notes can be very interesting, be a compliment to the original, perhaps help one understand components of the original creation, but there's no richness, no savor to them. It's the creative work that speaks to us, the evolution of the mysteries, the characters, their interplay and the emotions they feel and we are made to feel that enrich us in our relationship with this creation. No list of answers, or anecdotes about production decisions can replicate that. It'll be interesting to read, but it ain't no substitute.:33:

This both allays me, doesn't allay me and also doesn't allay me. Let me explain.

On the one hand, inevitably, fans of a popular work of fiction will have more questions than are relevant to the course of the story. Having the decency to at least acknowledge the fans and give them the answers they want seems...decent.

On the other hand, the Lost Encyclopedia that "answers all the questions" proves, in no uncertain terms, that we're not going to get all the answers in the show. The mere potential existence of such an encyclopedia gives the writers free reign to ignore the major mysteries of Lost for the remainder of the final season in order to focus on this new, contrived split timelines thing.

On the...third hand, I sincerely doubt that even the Lost Encyclopedia will really have any answers whatsoever. I mean, have we all been watching the same series for the past six years? They'll likely beat around the bush like they always do. I can see it now, "Encyclopedia Entry: Pregnancy:: blah blah blah pregnant women die on the Island blah blah blah in the Season 3 episode Maternity Leave blah blah blah the end." And it won't answer the most relevent question, "Why the frack do pregnant women die on the Island?! Seriously, come on! You don't even have an answer, do you? You just threw it in to make the Island seem more mysterious."

Who's writing this encyclopedia by the way? If it's the same people who write the captions for the "Enhanced" episodes, I won't touch it with a 4, 8 or 16 foot pole.

I never had any concerns
Nor did I. I expect them to answer everything necessary to complete the story on the show. Anything else..I might be curious about their answer to things, but I'd really prefer that some things remain a mystery. The answers are never as good as the questions. So if it's not vital to the show, I say leave it be.
