View Full Version : Whose Funeral Was Jack's Son Upset At?
Puddin Tame 03-08-2010, 05:31 PM JACK'S MOM: How's David holding up?
JACK: What?
JACK'S MOM: He was really upset at the funeral.
JACK: He was?
JACK'S MOM: He didn't tell you?
JACK: No...no, he didn't. Communication is not one of his strong suits.
I didn't understand this. This can't refer to Christian's funeral can it? It seems to refer to a funeral Jack didn't attend. If Jack attended, He would have noticed himself that David was upset. Notice how Jack's Mom asked, "He didn't tell you?" as opposed to "You didn't notice? He was sitting right next to you!" It wouldn't make sense for them to have a funeral for Jacks' dad while Jack was in Australia retrieving the body, though.Whose funeral was Jack's mom talking about?
Michaud 03-08-2010, 06:09 PM I have always been led to believe Christian had not been buried, and that Jack was returning the body to LA for the funeral.

Yes, Jack even told his mother on the phone that they couldn't have the funeral without him. Since per Jack there was only two hours between when he was calling her and when the funeral was supposed to be held, maybe his mother and David were already at the funeral home
NBC001 03-08-2010, 10:58 PM The plane landed on Wednesday and the conversation about David took place on Friday.
"LA X"
OCEANIC-MALE: It appears it was never put on the plane.
JACK: [visibly upset] The funeral is in two hours - when is it getting here?
OCEANIC-MALE: Mr. Shephard, I can't tell you how deeply sorry we are but we don't know when it will arrive, because we're not exactly sure where it is.
LOCKE: No I'm not talking about the coffin, I mean how could they know where he is. They didn't lose your father, they just lost his body.
[Jack, seeming to understand Locke, nods - Lock smiles]
I'd say they decided to have the funeral without Christians body and are planning on burying it later when it finally is found.
RULost 03-08-2010, 11:45 PM I assumed it was Christian's but great observation... I know Jack said the body was in Berlin so if they had the funeral it would have been without the body.

This would fit with the outcome of Jack's conversation with Locke in LA X, which appeared to be that Jack was more willing than before to let his father's body 'go'. I assume Jack was more comfortable with burying an empty casket than had he would have been had he not had that conversation. Taken a step further, that would fit with the sense that what is happening in the so-called sideways reality (it isn't) is the Losties helping each other in much the same way as they are have done on the island.

But why wouldn't Jack be present at the funeral, body or no body? Where was Jack if he was not at his father's funeral, where he would have observed his son being upset (as Jack's mom reported later)?

Maybe talking to someone else!

Maybe David told his grandmother that he was upset (perhaps about the body being missing?) when Jack wasn't right there. As NBC said, Jack may have been talking with someone else.
Have you never been so caught up in your own grief that you just don't notice what is going on around you? Jack lost his father and Oceanic lost his father's body -- being so distracted at the funeral that he didn't notice his son's behavior is something I can forgive (and since David and Jack didn't have a good relationship, I doubt David would have expressed his feelings to Jack).

Have you ever been to a funeral where someone was upset? It's hard not to notice, especially if youre sitting beside the person!

Was Jack sitting next to David?
"The Lighthouse"

JACK: What?

Margo didn't say "you didn't notice" so it doesn't seem like it was noticeable.
David talked to Margo but didn't talk to Jack, is that strange for teenage boys? When my ex comes over and he's walking in the front door my one son walks out the back door. So I don't think it's strange in the least that Jack didn't know that David was upset.

People grieve differently. Sometimes it's very obvious when they're in pain, and sometimes its not. The little we've seen of David suggests that he's like Jack -- he bottles up his feelings. I doubt he was bawling his eyes out at the funeral and he may not have been crying at all. Margo is David's grandmother, and, not to sound sexist, women tend to pick up on others' emotions better than men. I'm not really surprised that Margo noticed and Jack didn't.
Michaud 03-13-2010, 08:45 AM Perhaps he sat with his mother at the funeral.

So you think David sat there stoically and then latter announced "I was very upset at the funeral."? Perhaps grandma noticed he was playing with his PSP more aggressively than usual. :)
100%
Perhaps he sat with his mother at the funeral.
At the back of the church where no one would notice.
The fact that we have to speculate on any of this points to sloppy writing, yes?
