View Full Version : Literary References in this Episode
nash-villain 03-10-2010, 12:53 AM Lostpedia references the book "The Chosen" seen in Sawyers tent but no reference is made to the other book in Ben's hand while he's holding the porn in the tent just before that. The cover includes the name Benjamin Disraeli and his famous quote "Justice is truth in action."
Anybody know anything about this book? Wanna make inferences from it's inclusion?

"The Chosen is the bestselling book by Chaim Potok published in 1967. It is about two teenage Jewish boys who form a friendship, though they come from different worlds...Literary themes within the book include widespread references to senses (especially sight), the pursuit of truth in a gray world, the strength of friendship, and the importance of father-son relationships. Many themes common to Potok's works prevail such as weak women and children, strong father figures, intellectual characters, and the strength and validity of faith in a modern secular world.
(Italics mine)
Seems to be many Lost themes here.

I remember the movie with Robby Benson in it...

Haven't figured out the mag, but I'm thinking it might be a clue. That's alot of B's man. Left side print under arm: Going There/ Getting To The Bottom Of It/ Rear View Mirrors. I keep looking at the string knot in the bikini like I'm trying to find the bunny Playboy hides in their cover shots..geez...:insane:
The book says: Justice And Truth In Action Benjamin Disraeli
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Disraeli
FROM WIKI: Although born of Jewish parents, Disraeli was baptised in the Christian faith at the age of thirteen, and remained an observant Anglican for the rest of his life. In response to an anti-Semitic comment in the British parliament, Disraeli memorably defended his Jewishness with the statement, "Yes, I am a Jew, and when the ancestors of the Right Honourable Gentleman were brutal savages in an unknown island, mine were priests in the Temple of Solomon."
Interesting comment, and he's known for his quotes, but I like this one in regards to the island--brutal savages in an unknown island and priests in the temples...In accordance with the prophecy of course...Obviously, the books convey Jewish overtones...
beema 03-10-2010, 01:40 AM dang, you beat me to Benjamin Disraeli with your edit!

The book says: "Justice And Truth In Action" --Benjamin Disraeli
What Benjamin Disraeli actually said was:
"Sir, I say that justice is truth in action"

I know-like I said he's known for his quotes. Maybe I confused you with the quotes around the title of the book. My B. I removed them in the post above. But that's what the book title says. And I can't find this book in his bibliography, nor as a biography...(<>..<>)

Perhaps it is a biography written about Benjamin Disraeli, with that as the title, and not a Disraeli book.
Or maybe it's a missprint.

Well, I've looked through my copy of Booty Babes and can't find any clues. Just plenty of Booty.
nash-villain 03-10-2010, 11:33 AM From what I can tell the Benjamin Disraeli book doesn't actually exist. Even the title is a slight misquote. The title in the screen cap is "Justice AND Truth in Action" and his quote is "Justice IS truth in action." I suppose the "justice and truth" title is just another reference to the balancing scales of justice. "The Chosen" reflects this same theory of justice and balance from a Jewish perspective.
Interesting other tidbit - Benjamin Disraeli would have been Prime Minister of England when the Black Rock got to the Island.

I know, right-nothing like a copy of Booty Babes along with a tall cold can of BOOTY SWEATTM...Now that's livin'... ;)

deeannek 03-10-2010, 03:28 PM What about the "B" spot? My first thought was , how crude but could that be some kind of clue?
Pink Human 03-10-2010, 05:43 PM Perhaps a little Jacob/Ben parallel???

Reuven again finds himself a buffer between father and son when, in the novel's climax, the two friends learn Reb Saunders's purpose for raising his son in silence: Reb Saunders had discovered early on that his son's dawning intelligence was far outstripping his sense of compassion for others. He wanted his son to understand the meaning of pain and want, so he shut him out emotionally. Finding the grown-up Danny indeed had a heart, and cared deeply about other people, Reb Saunders was willing to give his blessing ….
Emphasis mine.
beema 03-10-2010, 06:14 PM Should listen to the new Geronimo Jack's Beard podcast. Seems Michael Emmerson has actually read The Chosen.
Briolette 03-10-2010, 06:41 PM The Disraeli book has what appears to be a plastic/cellophane book jacket, which to me means that the copy is probably a library edition or a library specific cover not available on "store bought" editions. The purchased "protective cover" is usually completely different than the actual cover on the book.
eta: A book cover of paper, a "dust jacket" usually comes with a book in most "modern" book seller editions.
UnderAlienControl 03-10-2010, 07:48 PM Maybe that's what it is Bri-some research edition not mass published, because I can't find it anywhere. It probably doesn't even really exist, and we're just supposed to focus on the title which is slightly changed from his famous quote but works just fine as a clever book title for a bio on Disraeli. So I'll take it at it's word as a clue: Truth AND Justice In Action...:alien:

Could be.TPTB know we are going to examine the mag (just for the articles, of course ;) )
