Remember the Swan? Good times, dude, good times. Remember the countdown timer? It displayed Ancient Egyptian for "underworld" when the timer got too low. Remember "Cerberus?" Lots of underworld references across the series so far, especially related to the smoke monster.
Remember Cerberus Vents? How we all used to think that maybe the smoke monster travels along underground? And remember all the hubub about burying bodies far enough underground as part of the fulfillment of an "treaty" (or "agreement" or something, I can't remember the word they used).
Clearly, there's something about smokey and the underworld. What if this is a more literal statement than we think?
In Dr. Linus, we saw MIB use a Jedi mind trick to free Ben of his shackles. We've never seen anything like that. Well, did you notice that Ben's foot was significantly far underground when MIB magically unlocked the chains?
Maybe MIB has a supernatural sort of dominion over the underworld (literally). Granted, he seemed to shake things around in "Jacob's" Cabin back in Season 3, but that seemed feeble, like he was stretched beyond his limits, whereas he opened Ben's shackle with ease and - I might add - style. I think that's because Ben's foot and the shackle were underground, and MIB can manipulate things underground as he pleases.
The Templars (have we coined a term for the Temple-living Others yet?) seemed to know who MIB was immediately and many switched to his side without a second thought once they learned Jacob was dead. I think, then, that it's not a large leap of logic to say that the whole "burying bodies to fulfil our contract" thing was an agreement between Jacob's people (the Others) and Smokey. The agreement was to bury bodies far enough underground for Smokey to have dominion over them, because he's been searching for an adequate body all this time.
Agree? Disagree? Why?
