I have never laughed in disgust so loud before. That scene where Richard pops out of the jungle.

paraphrase:

Jack: Where have you been?
Richard: You wouldn't believe me if i told you.
Jack: Try me
Richard: You are not ready.

ROFL
Who would not believe anything at this point? After all this time, Jack is still not ready? Give me a break.

I'm afraid the exchange actually went like this.

JACK: Where did you come from?
RICHARD: You wouldn't believe me if I told you.
JACK: Try me.
RICHARD: Not yet. But if you wanna go to the Temple, it's this way.
[He walks away ... Hurley looks at Jack]
HURLEY: Dude, do you trust that guy?
JACK: At least he's not stallin'.
[They follow Richard]

All richard meant was that jack wouldn't believe he was tied up by the smoke monster in lockes form

I don't think Richard quite believed what he'd experienced...everything he believed in was destroyed and he just wanted to die, not answer Jack's questions.

He woudn't believe it? After time travelling to the 70's, surviving two plane "crashes", seeing black smoke kill people and suddenly having a new destiny kick he won't believe that Locke appears to be alive and roaming around the island?

That's the word paraphrasing ever.

Maybe he refers to another thing. I come from a parallel universe, I come from 1800...

Yeah, I thought this bit of dialog was completely ridiculous, but I've mentioned that a bunch of times already in other threads, so I'm not going to get into it again.

I'll quote Aphasia_1, who summarized my thoughts about this exchange pretty well:
I can't decide if the writers are being ironic (wink to the fans fed up with waiting), sarcastic (angry at the fans fed up waiting) or clueless to their own dialogue.

Nope...nope.

Richard was just AT THE TEMPLE. Of course they would have believed this, but Richard wanted to lead them to the Black Rock instead. So he used the go-to Others line for avoiding the answer to a question - "you wouldn't believe me if I told you." Any other meaning is irrelevant, he only said this to deceive Jack and Hurley.

I liked this ep....

But I'm at the point, now, where this kind of dialogue just makes me roll my eyes. What are you asking a question for? You won't get an answer, and you'll be perfectly satisfied not to get an answer. Jack, the other week, demanded an answer vehemently...Impressive!....of course he demanded the answer from a person who didn't have any answers to give. That made me laugh. Now they are asking each other questions, even though they all know the exact same info.

(I know that they all know the same info, because it is apparently acceptable for Hurley to all of a sudden know Richard, even though they have never met *because someone must have told him*)

Yeah, I'll agree that this was a pretty obvious stalling tactic on the part of the writers. I mean, they've been stalling the sharing of information between characters since the show began, but never through such transparent dialogue.

I think it was also a wink at the audience since they know we are waiting for Richard's back story, but still... it was weak.

Nope...nope.

Richard was just AT THE TEMPLE.

When was Richard at the temple? The last we saw of him, he had just walked away from the Locke monster....

We didn't see him at the Temple but he told Hurley and Jack that he just came from there.
"Dr. Linus"
RICHARD: Because everyone at the Temple is dead.
JACK: What do you mean they're all dead? What happened?
RICHARD: I'm not sure what happened. But I just came from there, and... there's no survivors.

Jack asked "Where did you come from?" not "Where were you?"

Richard comes from 1800, so it's likely he was referring to that.

Richard's date or period of origin has never been confirmed. While it now appears he may have something to do with the Black Rock, it is just as likely that he has been on the island for much longer.

I like that explanation. I didn't think about it like that. I guess I am just Frustrated and worried that there is so few epi's left.

Don't get me wrong, I still love this show.

I think it was a hint of how Richard can travel around and just appear out of no where.

What comes to mind for me is......

Richard is the Hurley Bird and can fly around

Which is why he knows about them being dead at the temple.
