Is it possible he tricked him into turning the wheel which then sucked his actual 'human' type body out into the desert and left him on the island as an angry cloud of black smoke?

What other meaning could be taken from this statement. Say what you like about MiB at least he appears to tell it straight up.

I think you're pretty much spot on, except I don't think it was the Donkey Wheel that caused it. Otherwise, John and Ben would both be Smokies, right? Not sure how it happened, but I think we'll find out toward the end.

Hmmm could be that, but I was just thinking that maybe the way he is being 'treated' by Jacob (not being allowed to leave) is what he is referring to?
