I think Widmore is looking for the pockets of electro-magnetic energy in order to sink the island, trapping MIB forever. Therefore the sunken island we saw in LA X could've been a flash forward.

Damon/Carlton said to not call them 'alternate' as that makes them seem 'less real' and if it is really just a 'what if' situation then it wouldnt be real.

There is def gonna be some big revelation at some point but I dont think its simply a what-if scenario.
