It looked like the letter had money in it and told Kate of her mother being in the hospital. Who sent it?

I assume that it was Tom.

I was wondering who sent that letter also. It wasn't Tom because he was very surprised to see Kate. And when Kate mentioned about her mom being in the hospital Tom said, "I heard."

Tom also said to Kate that it was unfair for her to come back here...home. That would be an odd thing for him to say if he had sent her that letter.

In responding to a post, my mind started to think off the track, but since it involved a 'theory'... I put the bulk of my thinking in a post there.
http://www.thefuselage.com/threaded/index.php?topic=16324.0 (post posits a theory but contains no spoilers)

But, this line of thinking could explain who sent the letter. Maybe it was 'Diana'... when the theory is Diana was not the mother.

I thought t was Tom as well.

I just don't think he expected Kate to show up.

So that would mean Tom sent her the money too?

The letter has a flowered border

It's possible to read some of it, if anyone wants to give it a try.

I wish I were a handwriting expert, but the handwriting looks as if a middle aged female hand wrote it.* Near Kates wrist it is signed "Love"

IMO, the letter was written by an aunt or cousin.

Either way it is obvious someone is helping Kate. How would she have known otherwise to go looking for a plane in a safety deposit box in NM. Someone would have had to keep her up to date on where Tom's widow moved to after Tom's death.

It appears as if the $20 that is on top is one of the newer ones.

It could have been her friend, Beth.

Very true - I forgot about Beth. Thanks!

All I could make out from the screen cap was a mention of chemo, of failing fast, and something about staying at the hospital and "since you left."

Crazy random thought: Tom's wife sent the letter, she is Kate's best buddy! lol Knife in back! Knife in back!

(not put in theory section cuz it's simply goofy)

I don't think Diane wrote the letter, the letter talks about Dianne in the 3rd person, therefore Dianne wouldn't have written it. I also agree with the fact that Tom didn't write it either. He was obviously surprised to see her in his car and he made no mention of, 'so I see you got my letter'.

It is someone who knows that she is on the run, obviously if they know all about Dianne's condition and know Kate, they would know her at Katie or Catherine. However they addressed the letter to Joan Hart. So we need to find out who this person is. In my opinion I believe it is a woman because of the paper, handwriting and length of the letter.

The letter writer is a big fan of Clarissa Explains it All and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch...hehehe aka Melissa *Joan Hart*

Or maybe Kate's just a big fan!

*apologies*

That was all I could THINK of during the epi last night!!! CLARISSA!

I thought it was her Father, first off, then her Mother but that didnt pan out ..........Does Kate have a sister???
Its somebody close.Somebody she aprises of her aliases & traveling plans.

I vote for friend Beth OR a (unknown) relative.

Im still kinda pissed we dont have any answers to Kate's backstory.Fine we know about the plane but we still dont know the crime(s) which had Katherine on the run and Id hoped when the plane story was revealed wed get the other answers (LIKE how did Kate know the plane was in the deposit box? How did she get the key?)

I studied the letter - brought it into a photo editor and played with the colors. This is what I could make out of the handwriting...

since my
the chemo and the doctors
else they can do. She's still as
and refuses to stay at the hospital.
she's growing weaker and fear that
no other choice
how hard all of this may be
than anything that things
different ... know when this
I am hoping it's soon
because she ... much home left.
You will be
and prayers. Lov

Good job Mama. I think we can assume it's someone close to both Diana and Kate who is "helping" her run. this would also explain how this person would know where to reach her at the motel.

How did Kate know the letter would be there and that it would be addressed to "Joan Hart"? It may have been sitting there for some time. How long has Diane been in the hospital?

Possibly because she had a conversation with a friend who had been helping her. If she told the friend that she was staying at that motel under the name Joan Hart.
