View Full Version : MIB name was spoken during the episode...
yoyoyo 05-12-2010, 06:42 PM by the Mom after being stabbed. As she lay on the floor dying she looked up at MIB and She said Jose or Yose
Jose is the English transliteration of the Hebrew and Aramaic name Yose, which is etymologically linked to Yosef or Joseph. The name was popular during the Mishnaic and Talmudic periods.
this more and more looks to be another reference to religion especially with the use of The Light as the heart of the island/world
Xevallah 05-12-2010, 07:09 PM I just rewatched that. I'm kind of terrible at this sort of thing, but I think you're right
Dublin Dilettante 05-12-2010, 07:11 PM She says "tha..." as in "thank you."

I think she said, "Esau." Esau was Jacob's twin. His name meant "hairy," and while the Biblical Esau was born first (in LOST, Jacob came first), you notice that Jacob's brother *did* have a full head of black hair. Esau and Jacob struggled together all their lives, with Esau being a wanderer and hunter, and Jacob kind of a shy, stay-at-home, more retiring person.
The_Peoples_Elbow 05-12-2010, 07:21 PM I thought the same thing last night. My GF is Puerto Rican and she said that it sounded a lot like Jose in Spanish.
I just went and rewatched that scene and I swear to God it sounds like she says Jose....
Chef Hurley 05-12-2010, 07:29 PM Kinda sounded like Esau to me, but I think she was trying to say thank you, and it came out "Tha..."
Watch this become another "OMG Keamy said Island" debate. lulz.
TheColonel 05-12-2010, 07:29 PM It sounded like she said hurley to me...that would be kinda odd because like the mib, hurley can also see dead people.
The_Peoples_Elbow 05-12-2010, 07:29 PM Then what does she say? I have the sound isolated in Audacity (Sound recording software) and I am telling you if it is not Jose then it is still phonetically
HOE- ZAY or HUH SAY
Futura 05-12-2010, 07:31 PM I just rewatched and she said, "Thank you." BUT, why was she thanking MIB for killing her? Was she tired of protecting the island? Or did she think she deserved to be killed in retribution for killing the real mother?
I'm going to look around for any transcripts so we can be certain.
The_Peoples_Elbow 05-12-2010, 07:34 PM It's before she says Thank You to MIB. The first words that come out of her mouth after she gets stabbed and hits the floor. Go watch it at ABC.com
AZRobbo 05-12-2010, 07:38 PM I bought the episode in iTunes, and the audio is very clear on my PC speakers. At 36:59 in the video when she first hits the ground, and rolls over onto her back and clearly says "Jose" (phonetically Hoe-Say). This is 20 seconds before she says 'thank you'.
It's not even close to Essau.
Lost_in_CA 05-12-2010, 07:38 PM Watched it twice - she said thank you quite clearly. No way did she say Esau.
She thanked Brother for putting her out of her misery. She was tired of being the protector of the magical mystery light.
The_Peoples_Elbow 05-12-2010, 07:52 PM Ok I just whipped up a quick video to youtube with the audio in a loop. You decide for yourself after you listen to it...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Os4ghsMVKas
I just went back to watch the scene. I think it's fairly obvious she says "nothing". Look at her mouth.

Outloud speak the word "Jose" and try not to move your jaw. It's quite easy..... Especially if you are speaking from your stomach because you just got stabbed through the diaphragm.
AZRobbo 05-12-2010, 07:58 PM Her mouth is partially open the entire time, even when she isn't speaking.
When the debated word is spoken you can see her tongue move with her mouth, so she is saying / mumbling / exhaling something.
steevo 05-12-2010, 08:04 PM She is just gasping.
Does someone have the closed caption??
Miguelito 05-12-2010, 08:20 PM Sounded like a gasp to me, like she's trying to catch her breath but can't.
AZRobbo 05-12-2010, 08:32 PM Closed Captioning says "(whispers indistinctly)"
(In case anyone is wondering - this isn't intended as a 'snarky' comment, its really what the closed captioning says)
Sam G 05-12-2010, 08:33 PM OK. Here's a warning.
Stop with the snarky answers.
You hear it or you don't
Facehead 05-12-2010, 08:38 PM She says "tha..." as in "thank you."
I just rewatched it and this was my impression too.
AZRobbo 05-12-2010, 08:48 PM Quote: She says "tha..." as in "thank you."
I've changed my mind, and now agree that this is what she was saying. I think she may have exhaled in the middle of the word and thus gave it a multi-sylable inflection.
It also makes sense if you consider that the closed caption indicated that it wasn't an important piece of dialog, and the fact that all interviews indicate that they intended him to remain un-named (at least for now).
You'd think if they wanted his name to be known that it would be clear, and at a minimum it would be included in the closed captioning.

sorta kinda maybe
The "nickname" for Yoseph would be Yossi (pronounced YO SEE) and the name is plenty popular today (since thats what we call my son, Joseph).
Live2getherdiealone 05-12-2010, 10:02 PM Wow.... I'm amazed at the desperation to try to find answers when none are given.
I'm not even sure how but I was certain, WITHOUT A DOUBT that she said "thank you", I never even thought of anything different, what I mean is... it didn't "kind of sound" like thank you to me, it sounded like thank you. Period.
I think the good ol' times when they had us going crazy overanalyzing little details, trying to decipher what lies behind it all, are over.
itsagame 05-12-2010, 10:06 PM I hear....
Uh-Thay
to me, it is definatley a Th sound and not an Sss or ZZz
Uh is not as clear as Thay, Uh is more whispery
Briolette 05-12-2010, 11:33 PM I just heard (in the throes of death) a woman trying to say "thank-you", then she gained a little strength and said it again... I haven't seen the episode again though. If the writers/script gave the last death breath after she said, "thank-you", there would be a heck of a lot more to debate if you've never heard it before.

She says something before she says "Thank You". I don't think she was saying his name though.
johnnydoe 05-13-2010, 12:46 AM It does sound like "Jose" to me.
But, I want to believe that that's not what she said 'cause I want to believe that the writers of this show will straight out give us a name if they wanted to instead of giving us undecipherable sigh 'cause I want to believe they will not latch on to something this significant (imho) and make a meaningless mystery out of it 'cause I want to believe the writers of this show are _not_ idiots.
Why do I feel so empty when I watch this show? Maybe it's me and not them...
jethro jazz 05-13-2010, 05:14 AM she says the first part of thank you
Live2getherdiealone 05-13-2010, 07:32 AM I saw it again, and I know why I didn't doubt it, because it was way before that, she even says something in between. I see how you might think she whispered a name. But I also think it's something like "tha-.." as in trying to say thank you.
kittycraft 05-13-2010, 09:01 AM Maybe whichever of the candidates left that can figure out his name will take Jacob's spot?
E Lillyputian 05-13-2010, 09:44 AM Obviously, it's Rumpelstiltskin... but Mom didn't know how to say it in Latin.
LostFan21617 05-13-2010, 02:13 PM The recap at EW.com claims she said the word "Nothing."
rabidranger 05-13-2010, 02:20 PM This guy will remain the "Man With no Name." I blame that more on identifying Jacob then anything else. There's too many obvious (and distracting) parallels that would be drawn with giving the MIB a specific name (such as Esau, Cain, Seth, etc).
Piecar 05-13-2010, 02:31 PM Let me add my vote to her not saying a name. She says huuuhhhhTHA.... Which I took right away for her saying "thank you"....which she said later. The breathy part before that is her doing some "just got stabbed" acting. There's no name in there, and the poster who mentioned that is was the Keamy Island Moment all over again is spot on.

let's not forget (never forget!) the great 2007 debate of whether or not Jack said "either" or "neither" at the end of Season 3.
my vote is that she just said "thank you" and nothing more. The writers CLEARLY (and AWKWARDLY) avoided saying his name the full 42 min of the episode..... if they were going to do a "big reveal" of his name at the end, it would have been much more distinct then the dying breaths of a very old woman.
mikebinos 05-13-2010, 04:12 PM People always look for hidden answers in things like this. But has this show really ever had such a huge thing said in a way like this, or hidden something so well that only a few people saw/heard it? Most of the time it's people hoping this is the case, but from what I've watched, this show says things clearly when they are meant to be heard
locklove 05-13-2010, 04:50 PM the only problem with not giving him a name is that it makes no sense in a story to expect the audience to believe that one twin gets a name but there's just not enough energy to name the other, and that you could actually raise two children with only one having a name........Nah, ridiculous.
UnderAlienControl 05-13-2010, 10:35 PM I think what she was going to say was Oh Tha(nk God/whoever or whatever she prays to/believes in). It was the way she said it before she stopped. Oh tha/nk God-the cadence seemed right to me. Hence, "Oh-Tha__ ___" becomes "Jo-se". Oh-Tha becomes Jo-se...Get it? Since it was English by then, it may have literally been "God". Or Crom, who knows...
Hence, that's my 2 cents, so don't get intense, go light some incense, for golden is silence, it all comes out in the rinse. For people on the fence, it's hard to convince, the audio's dense, so words we shall mince, to make audible sense, of this scene of violence...And if I may, I must say, way back in the day, Buckwheat said "Oh-tay", and it was Ok......:alien:
girlyfied 05-13-2010, 11:12 PM I thought I heard her say, Jose, too. I wasn't sure if I was imagining it or my hearing is getting bad. Thanks for posting this because I really thought it was just me.
Futura 05-13-2010, 11:48 PM Obviously, it's Rumpelstiltskin... but Mom didn't know how to say it in Latin.

Yep. I heard it too. I rewatched it about 10 times as well. Nothing in the closed caption. But she is saying the TH sound....Yoooo Thay....or "Uthe"...or was she just starting to say "thank you"? I've been looking up Uthi, Uti and any name that might match what I thought I heard her say. Had to be something in Latin though, right?
My friends think it was just a breathy attempt at saying Thank you but I'm reaching here!!
Oooo Thay???
deeannek 05-14-2010, 01:39 AM I was watching w/captioning and it said that she said Thank you. But then captioning is not always right, especially if there is a last minute script change. If you did hear Jose could it be that something was changed between EST and PST?
amidala64 05-14-2010, 07:53 PM In Doc Jensen's recap on EW.com he claims she says the word "Nothing".
Close captioning does not confirm this but it makes sense.
Live2getherdiealone 05-14-2010, 09:56 PM LOL this reminds me of the Simpsons movie when Marge asked the Comic Book Store guy what might EPA mean, and he says "I believe it's the sound the green lantern made when Sinestro threw him into a vat of acid. Eeepaa!":biggrin::biggrin:
Sayid Jarrah 05-14-2010, 10:34 PM His name is and always has be Aaron. Claire didn't come up with that name on her own. She got it from the Island.
I have a feeling that in the "sideways" Clair will give birth to twins. This time the first being born's name will be Aaron. Then just like Claudia in the cave she will begin giving birth to a second baby who's name will be...
...
...
...Jacob. :D
middlenamewayne 05-15-2010, 01:37 AM I was watching w/captioning and it said that she said Thank you.
I think there are two different moments people are getting confused. When we watched the show, we had CC on as always (because of our loudly squawking feathered friends who we share the TV room with), and the moment that had me wondering was captioned with the "indecipherable whisper" or the similar thing that a previous poster pointed out.
As far as Jacob' s brother never being named, how about this: Fakemom would have a lot of 'splaining to do but nevertheless perhaps not naming him was her way of trying to make up for killing realmom -- by honoring the names (and not-names) that she gave to the boys before she was murdered!
Also, the day after the ep aired there was a convenient doc that ran on another channel about the Bible's Jacob and Esau. In it -- though they were speaking of God and not the brothers -- they mentioned that to know someone's name is to know their essence (and noone can know the essence of God is what they were getting at).
Think about it, though -- what did Jacob's brother become when he was dumped into the light? PURE ESSENCE! And what is one of the greatest powers that "Smokey" possesses? The ability to read the PURE ESSENCE of others!!!
So whaddaya think???
