The intro was red and all the phenomena flashing on the screen was different than the usual (blue) intro. I saw "First people" and "Mutations".

I thought it was a nice touch. Did anyone else like it?

Yeah, I did notice it, and wondered if it was the "other side" version, like we had the 80's version (which was AWESOME) earlier..

I thought the 80's intro was classic. I went back to look at it on YouTube after seeing this one. I'm betting that all the "over there" episodes will be redly introduced.

If this is the over there version, I wonder if the "First People" would be us over here. And the "Mutations" would be the Cortexiphan (sp?) kids (Sucks they had to die. I was looking forward to some superhero action.)

Yeah, I was fully in X-men-done-Fringe-style mode. I'm going to go back and see what else it listed. I'm truly curious about those references.

Great great touch. This show has really been doing everything right since the 80's episode (whose opening was BEYOND awesome). I noticed the red obviously and figured it was for the alternate universe, but didn't notice the different fringe sciences...

Okay, got them all. They were: Hypnosis, Pyrokinesis, Hive Mind, ESP, Neuroscience, Clairaudience, Cryonics, First People, Astral Projection, Protoscience, Mutation and Genetic Engineering.

What about the 80's version? And the "normal" intro?

Interesting - some of the fringe sciences from alternate reality have been real in our reality...specifically I'm thinking of pyrokinesis from this episode. Was anything on their list already a reality in our world? Also, what the hell does "First People" mean exactly...

Wow, I DIDN'T notice that when I watched. Thanks for pointing it out.

I actually said "X-Men!" when I was watching this episode. heh. (in the scene where they are practicing their skills.)

I'm starting to think that we're gonna be jumping back and forth betweens universes on a fairly regular basis in season 3, in light of the wealth of information we got on the lives of the alternate fringe division.
It seemed to me like they went to too much trouble fleshing out the alternate characters for this to be just a novelty episode. I think it would be pretty cool for them to present both sides of the alternate earth issue - while bringing the observers into a more prominent role.

You could be right, GT! That could be done really well, and I feel excited about that idea. But I also feel pretty attached to our original heroes. I already know from the Sideways versions of our Lost characters that I feel no connection to them, so I hope that we don't go TOO far down that route with Fringe that I also feel like "but I don't care about this version of these people!"

Agreed - the alternate earth has become a police state...but it's Walter's fault for being the 1st one to make a breach between universes. I see the alternate FD as just different (although misguided) versions of our people just trying to do their jobs and protect their world.Presenting both sides also is a huge opportunity for the actors to actually play two versions of the same characters.

This weekend I've been watching early episodes from my season 1 dvd, and in one of the 1st episodes, Walter said something that clued Peter into the revelation that Walter had experimented on him as a child...leading me to speculate that later on it will come out that Peter is also a Cortexifan child...or was experimented on by Walternate in the other universe.

At one point, Walter got angry with Peter and said something to the effect of "Why must you always be such a smart***! Your just like your mother - always questioning my judgement!"
Could that be what led to her suicide?

I remember the part where it seems like Peter was a cortexophan kid. (Although I'm not so sure anymore this is the case.) I totally don't remember the other part that you mention. Very interesting. I think we will definitely learn more about what lead to Peter's mother killing herself. It's really fascinating that the Alt mother lost Peter, doesn't kill herself. Main mother loses Peter, gets a new Peter, kills herself.

BTW, I'm considering a S1 and S2 rewatch this summer and started a thread about it in Fringe Talk. Sounds like you've already gotten started, GT, but are you interested? I haven't officially decided to buy the DVDs yet.

The quote I posted was almost word for word from "The Arrival" which introduced the Observer.
I'm gonna try a season 1 rewatch on weekends. I've managed about 6 or 7 episodes, and have barely scratched the surface - there's a lot of mythology to plow through!
(I did the same thing with season 1 of "Sons of Anarchy", and you'd be surprised how much you forget from the early shows.)

Here's the thing though...are they really misguided? Their entire world has been falling apart around them for 25 years - maybe they don't have a choice with what they're doing, unpleasant as it may be. I agree by the way that it seems they're setting up for a more permanent stay in the alternate universe. Unlike Lost though, I feel that Earth2 over here is a lot more "real" than I felt the Sideways is. Not really sure why...

They're misguided in blindly following the "secretary", not yet knowing his sinister intentions.

ronmossad

But that's the thing, are they sinister? From the perspective of his universe, maybe he's just putting an end to all the insanity that his counterpart has caused over there. Yeah it sucks for us but in his terms (and in the terms of the bizarro Fringers) he may just be righting a wrong from 25 years ago and stopping more of his people from getting killed...

That's a posibility, but I suspect his intention is to try to destroy our universe as a way of preventing anyone else from doing what Walter did. He may wind up destroying both universes in the process.

The '80s version immediately struck me as reminiscent of the old TV show "In Search Of..." Then, while searching for a clip, I remembered who it was narrated by!

In Search Of...
