I've seen a lot of people complaining about Richard's apparent death, when we didn't really get even that strong a suggestion that he had died, let alone definitive proof.

The way in which Smokey hit him seemed reflective of his attitude towards Richard every time they've met. Dismissive and full of contempt, almost annoyed, rather than genuinely malevolent. It was a giant pimp slap. In fact, it was so quick and ridiculous I'm strongly inclined to believe he's not dead. Not yet, anyway. He may be gravely injured though. Injuries which a mortal man would probably die of. Though as we've seen, Jacob is passing the torch (He very nearly did anyway, maybe Jack will pull it out of the ground and fulfil the heavy handed metaphor/pun) and is apparently about to pass away himself. My guess is Richard dies when Jacob does. I envision Jacob's last act is to wander out into the jungle and find a mangled Richard lying in the brush. He says something sentimental, tinged with regret, touches him, and they both pass. And Richard is somehow reunited with Isabella.

Or it's Jack's first act. Ben contacts Miles on the talky and explains what happened. Miles finds Richard and naturally looks for Jack, being a doctor. As for how Miles finds them if he can't manage it on his own, i'm guessing they'll use dead people to tell him. Miles leads Jack back and he uses his new found gifts to release Richard.

Either method would be equally poignant. Jacob cursed him with immortality in the first place, and Jack was the one Richard confided in with his wish to die.

If they don't use either of those methods to send him off and he's already dead, i'm going to be sorely pissed. It took me all of 5 mins to think that up.

Wherever he goes the people all complain.
