ok, Jacob is a ghost that can only be seen by Hugo
the Jacob blonde kid is not a ghost, he could be seen by both MiB and Sawyer
blonde kid steals ashes from Hugo and then adult Jacob can be seen by everybody ... (as long as the ashes are burning ...)
i don't get it

If anybody around here gets it, it's news to me Ursul. Brother's actions when he first chases the kid further confounds the issue. It seems we'll have to let that one go..>As the fire's burnt out.

Just another thing sold as a mystery this season which will never be explained. Maybe he is Jacob's "mini me"?

nice one :D
i guess what the writers were thinking was some way of keeping MiB somewhat scared. otherwise he could do whatever he wanted and there would be no suspense. whenever the kid showed up, MiB seemed worried.
the ideea was, i guess, that the kid is a physical manifestation of jacob. some way he could still interact with the island, not just in spirit form. when the ashes burn, then the physical form becomes adult as the ashes are animated by the fire. the island is a place where rebirth can (partially) occur, so there really shouldn't be any surprise here.

The younger version of Jacob might be symbolic of Jacob being reborn; there's a theory floating around that MIB will try to reincarnate, if you will, through Aaron's birth in the alt. Perhaps Jacob has that option open to him as well?
Because otherwise, the use of the kid would just be limited to a "mysterious" and pointless tension building gag. And Lost would never do that to us. Right?

Hopefully they'll address this as well as what makes the other kids so special (Aaron, Walt, etc.) in the bonus features of the season 6 dvd/box set. It rritates me that Walt's been forgotten about.
