They probably fled Hydra because Smokey was sure to kill every person left there. They also knew that Desmond was on the main island and they needed him for the plan. I'm guessing that since Widmore knew about the barracks he went there first hoping that others would be there.

Of course, the absurdity of them ending up in Ben's cabin at the same time the C4 Trio arrived was pure 6th season Lost. "Whatever needs to happen, happens" as someone here once posted. So to answer your question, they were there in order to get betrayed by Ben in order to set up the whole "Ben is still evil" plotline.

As Locke said in season 4, the barracks are one of few places on the island with any form of protection. Too bad widmore forgot to turn on the pylons...

They brought over some equipment but didn't bring it with them when they came up to the barracks. I can't tell whether it was just a way to obscure her for the big Zoe reveal in the kitchen or whether she was after something there, but it looks to me like they were trying to find something and then were going elsewhere before they ran into the trio.

You're right the meeting was contrived. They are talking and not being quiet in a room that is just steps away from the kitchen, and they couldn't have been in there more than two minutes, and Zoe is already hunkered down under the sink. Highly highly unlikely

Too bad widmore forgot to turn on the pylons...

This is hilarious. Widmore, knowing that Smokey was out there and that the sonic fences apparently kept it out, didn't bother turning the system on. Ben didn't consider it either. How sloppy (and I'm not talking about the characters).

Widmore would have no idea what the code for the fence is because he's been away from the Island for almost twenty years

The code in the DI days was changed every day and I'm sure the Others changed it regularly maybe not everyday but they probably wouldn't have kept the same one all of the time. It's been three years since the fence was turned off who do you think knows or would remember the code.

If Ben or Richard had turned on the fence I'm sure someone would be complaining about the fact that it is ridiculous to think that after three years they would know or even remember what the code is.

They WERE going to get a little 'us' time, but you meddling kids had to crash the party.

I find the names Ben and Richard ridiculous.

The last time we saw Charles, in 'The Candidate', the Losties were escaping from his prison on Mini Craphole and subsequently, with the help of Locke, killed quite a few of his men and sank his sub. I suspect he was looking for his ex-detainees, and perhaps his failsafe.

I find the names Ben and Richard ridiculous. :24:

Yes... Zoe was routing through Ben's kitchen, hoping to find Desmond in a cupboard. It all makes sense now

Widmore does not poop in the woods!
And if he's gotta go, might as well leave one in Ben's toilet and "forget" to flush.

If I were Widmore, I'd look for them in the most obvious place first - a place where quite a few of them had lived over the last 30-or-so years. Zoe was probably trying to find a nourishing meal. Little did she know she wouldn't have a throat left to swallow it with 30 minutes later.

you know what's even funnier? where the barracks are, there is no body of water. think of when they first showed it then zoomed wayy out...to take a whole overhead view of where they were. it was completely land locked.

when locke blew up the sub it didn't make sense. But at least they were a ways away from the barracks and had to walk it. now they are able to look outside their window and see smokey docking a sub? lol...even earlier in this season when sawyer was hanging out there, it was land locked.

Zoe wasn't looking out a window.

"What They Died For"
[Their conversation is interrupted by Widmore's walkie-talkie giving off static. Zoe is trying to contact Widmore.]
ZOE: Charles?
WIDMORE: Yes.
[Switch to Zoe in the foliage and watching MIB/Locke approaching the island in an outrigger. She is on a ridge and using binoculars.]
ZOE: It's Locke. He's coming.
WIDMORE: Has he seen you?
ZOE: No, I don't think so.
[Switch to inside the cabin.]
ZOE: Our boat is still there. I didn't have time to...
WIDMORE: [interrupts] Run! Get back here as fast as you can.
