Was the rock in the Cave of Light preventing the volcano from erupting leading to a very nasty end of the world scenario?

Right after Desmond removed the island's tampon, it seems that lava was gonna start to come out of that hole any time.....

I could quite buy that, but then again what about the light itself?

I think that the most logic idea would be that millions of years ago, an asteroid carrying exotic matter impacted the island and created a 'volcano' or that the asteroid itself impacted inside a regular volcano that was already on the island....

Anyways, so many questions.....

SO MANY!!!!

Yeah, since it wasn't addressed, I'm sticking to Chef Hurley's call on the meteor as well, but I like your addition of it being an already existing island. I think that's the only way that it would have an existing volcano. And to verge into the geek territory, that initial impact was probably what started the island moving, and the exotic matter just kept accelerating it, possibly to just shy of light speed. We do see the probability co-ordinates flipping constantly in the lamp post.

Yup, my favorite theory right now too. I'm curious to see how they handle Lost 'post TV' and whether it will make we wish they just left certain things unknown. But I did like how this episode manged to bring up semi questions/answers--confirmation of the volcano? who put that giant rock/stalagmite in the hole? Oh, the possibilities.

I think there were symbols on it. I don't know if they were egyptians, though...

It would be kind of cool if they were 'unknown' to history....;)

I'm bumping this thread because I can't believe this and one other very short thread are the only places the volcano has been mentioned here. When the light went red, it was the first thing I thought of.

Perhaps this is supported via the meteor which struck Mr Cluck's. One instance doesn't count for much...but anything could have accomplished such destruction (though the meteor really confirmed Hurley's curse at the time.)

Anyway, we were at least introduced to a meteor.
