Everything on these Topics seems to need an acronym so the one I came up with tied to LOST is:

G>L>O>W>

The Great LOST of Weight, Support Group!

I thought it only right that we the most faithful fans of LOST, the Lostkteers ( per Fury I think )
should take the opportunity to support our LOST islanders and lose weight along with them! So, I purpose that we start our
own beginning of the LOST year weight loss program. Of course, anyone can join in at anytime!

How you chose to lose the weight is up to you. I personally recommend aerobic (with oxygen) exercise (walking, running, swimming, cycling, etc.) along with healthy balanced nutrition.
Before you begin ANY weight loss program*consult your Doctor or Health-care Professional!

We will begin on Wednesday, LOST DAY 1, January 5, 2005:

REMEMBER: It's not all about losing weight! It's about losing fat. It's about changing your body's chemistry and make-up!
You can lose FAT and gain MUSCLE without a TOTAL WEIGHT CHANGE! You WILL notice your measurements change!

These are some of the things you can do:

1. Weigh in using the same scales you will be able to access weekly.

2. Take full body front and side view pictures of yourself against a neutral colored*wall wearing shorts or a bathing suit.
No birthday suits please! This is a family board! An indoors photo always comes out easier. Some people like
to hold a newspaper or magazine with the date clearly showing out to their sides. You may like to post this photo with
additional ones as you progress toward your ultimate goal. Share these photos with us if you feel comfortable doing so.

3. Measure yourself at the neck, chest (nipple line), waist (belly button), mid-thigh and calf
( some of these will be more meaningful to some people than others)

Write all of this information down! Do not rely on your memory!
Make a simple chart on a legal pad or on your computer:

LOST DAY Date Weight Measurements ( Only Monthly at most ) / How do I feel?
1/5/04 245 lbs N18.5", C46", W40", MT24", C18" / Depressed about my weight!

Each LOST DAY (Wednesday) weigh yourself. Dietitians and Nutritionists will tell you not to expect to lose more
than 1 to 1 1/2 pounds per week The measurements are not absolutely necessary. As you lose weight you will naturally
notice changes in the way your clothes fit on you. You will likely gain muscle mass as you exercise and lose fat. So don't
only focus on total body weight!

IMPORTANT:
Never begin any weight loss program without first consulting your Doctor or Health-care Professional!

The following site has great information about a similar program! They also offer a lot of practical knowledge about how to go about
losing the weight in a safe way that suits your lifestyle. Check it out!

http://health.discovery.com/convergence/nationalbodychallenge2005/nationalbodychallenge2005.html

Every fourth week we will try to consistently post our measurements along with our weekly weight change and comments.

I think you should require contestants to eat only boar meat (okay, any type of pork) and bananas. That way they get the real Lost experience. :lol2:

Varda
12-11-2004, 05:58 PM
just in time for those new year resolutions..
i agree, the diets should be as Lost-like as possible. just don't forget they eat fish, too. o, and whenever a dieter has a craving, imagine you are eating whatever you crave, because Charlie spent the day searching to get it for you.

Tari Luinwe
12-12-2004, 12:14 PM
Oh I really like this idea. Definately sign me up. I'll get started on prepping for it. And Varda bringing in about Charlie looking for whatever I need. Definately will go along way with me lmao. Can't wait to start. So will we post our weight loss weekly on here? I personally would be embarassed to post my actual weight, but I would be willing to tell my weight loss for the week. :)

diablita

*walks in munching on imaginary chocolate that Charlie's found for me*

LOL... this is a great idea... I'm game... hee hee

Hiram
12-13-2004, 12:05 AM
We have a few weeks to perfect the idea. Obviously it will be all based on honesty.
But the pictures will show the evidence if you choose to post them. I guess we can
post a picture within a post. I don't know tech stuff. I know we can post links within posts.

If you do not wish to post your actual weight you can post percentage of total weight LOST.

Example: start weight 229, lost 12 pounds, On calculator enter 12 / 229 X 100 = 5.24 percent
of start weight..

That might be a good equalizer anyway for those people who need to loose 20 pounds vs.
those who wish to loose 100 pounds.

There is also a good health predicter caller Ideal Body Weight ( IBW ) I need to look up the formula
then I'll come back and post it.

this is GREAT! I'm in ! Was hoping to have lost some before the holidays, but now that they are here, it would be silly to start til after the New Year (and Jan.5 is a monumental day to begin with!)

Someone remind me...I'm sure I won't forget, but you never know...

Ok all as a Christmas gift to myself I bought an Xbox. Now that has nothing to do with weight loss but I bought this "game" called Yourself Fitness. I will tell you I am in love with it. This "game" is a fitness program with its very own personal trainer. You do an overall fitness test to see where you are at, then it creates a program for you to follow to allow you to lose your maximum amount of weight. The cool thing is, it increases difficulity as time goes on. It also creates a meal plan for you, so you can eat right as well as lose weight. The personal trainer is really cool and it works at your level so you get the most out of it. I'm rambling I know but its such a cool thing I wanted to share with everyone. Heres a link so you can get a better idea about it.

Ok, guys and gals, tomorrow is the big weigh in day! Also, measure in , etc. as per instructions on the first post on the first page of this thread.

Go ahead and take the photos, even if you don't wish to put them up on the thread.

For those who do, I will be making a collage of them with progress photos every three months!

It will really look great, I know it!

Well, I hope you are as psyched as I am, cause I need the motivation and the help of my fellow Lostkateers, fuseleers

to keep me at it.

I read an articale recently where the Doctor stated that it takes 30 days for something to become a habit,

and 6 months for it to become a part of your routine! So, let's start together and help each other stick with it!

Let The G>L>O>W> Begin!

Nanse
01-04-2005, 02:53 PM
Okay, I've been mulling this over for a bit. I've been reluctant because I really need toning more than losing weight. Honestly, I'd be happy with 15 pounds (If I lost 25 or more I'd be starting to get into eat a cheeseburger for heavens sake range).

But I am trying to lose 15 pounds and train for running 5k races. So, after much thinking, I've decided to give this a go. I figure it doesn't matter how much you want to lose, or how much you eventually lose versus everyone else. It's the moral support we will all give each other, and given my workout history, I could use all the moral support I can get.

So count me in for the weigh/measure in tomorrow.

ok - so I don't own a scale...and the measurement thing was too much to do (LOL i know!)

but, I did start last week - eating better, cut down on snacking, exercised a bit...

and today, when i put on my boots that zip to the knee, they were LOOSE!!!!

so, obviously, something is going....

just hope i don't loose all the weight from JUST my calves!!!!

hopefully, i can get a scale one of these days...

tonight i made lemon-basil chicken on my foreman grill...and instant garlic mashed po-tay-toes (no added salt, no butter, and used skim milk)....mmmmm....sometimes healthy food DOES taste good!

OK, here is my LOST DAY 2 , Wednesday, 2005. - "Hearts and Minds" - G>L>O>W> Update

I've been sneaking the occasional chocolate, but the Karate has been knocking it off apparently!

I am down 2 pounds from 244#

down to 242# ! ! !*

2 pounds down!

Losing two pounds per week is about the maximum any Dietitian or Nutritionist will tell you is healthy weight loss.

Of course when you start as heavy as me, I think I stand to loose faster at the beginning I hope! :lol2:

Really, any more than 1 to 11/2 pounds* per week is too much and probably water.* We don't want to get dehydrated!

That would be a bad thing!

Okay, here's my report:

1/5/04 - Weight: 145
1/12/04 - Weight: 142.8

That's 2.2, but I'm thinking I'll probably pop up to about 143 or 143.5 since yesterday I had hardly eaten lunch as it didn't sit well with me, and I hadn't eaten dinner yet. I also had just worked out, so there is some dehydration at work too. I'm pretty happy.

Hiram
01-14-2005, 12:23 AM
Nanse you did great!

Never make excuses for your success!

Next week is another 7 days.* You can loose 3500 to 5250 calories safely and easily in a week.

Say the nutritionists. That's 1 to 11/2 pounds!

Officially, don't anyone expect more than that. It took a long time to put it on, it will take a while to get it off.

Now, this is just my personal opinion, so please just take it as that:

If before you ate horribly, never exercised (especially aerobically), and were a couch or computer potatoe,

than I believe you stand to be able to loose more per week if you make big lifestyle changes.

Eating a balanced diet low in saturated fats and trans fats.* Read food labels.* Eat less red meats.* More fruit and veggies.

Aerobic ( means with oxygen ) exercise: Simply things like walking, biking, running, swimming, any exercise that

uses the major muscle groups continuously for a minimum of* 12 minutes at a time without getting short of breath.

At least 3 and up to 6 days per week. Breathing should be your guide.* You can buy heart rate monitors an stuff,

but the easiest thing is just to watch your breathing.

I never saw how long the challenge is supposed to last, but I'm determined to lose 100 pounds this year, to get back to the weight I was when I graduated high school almost ten years ago. Yuck, I can't believe it's been 10 years!

But anyway, I came to this late, but I'm going to do it. So sign me up, starting today.

I am currently 230 pounds. Haven't done the measurements because I don't have a measuring tape. Maybe I'll go get one tomorrow and post my measurements tomorrow night.

First off, awesome idea! This is just the kind of support I like!(associate anything with Lost and I am game) Thankfully, I actually started excercising at the cusp of the New Year. Here goes nothing.

1/5/05 -* Weight:* 230
1/12/05 - Weight: 228
1/19/05 - Weight: 224

I have been running 2 miles a week (so I go to the gym once a week...its been the 2 weeks before finals) which is usually about 25 minutes. Then I do the ultra fun MUSCLE TONING!!! Ow. Now that the semester is over, its Alyx to the gym thrice a week!

Thanks Hiram for reminding me about this!

Ok, since I'm an idiot and am just now starting, I guess I'll give my info and all:

Weight-140
Height-64 inches

I'll edit later with my measurments...Lost is starting in 20 minutes, and I won't have time to dig out the tape measurer and do it before it comes on *:lol2:.

Anyway, my goal is 115, because that's the normal weight for a female my age and height. Yes, my doctor said it was fine that I started this thing...he actually said this might be exactly what I need to get back into shape. Background info: I used to be a pretty huge fitness buff. I took dancing from the time I was 4 until I was 14, and one day I just blew up and quit all of it. Kinda decided I didn't really care how I looked from then on out, and now I'm trying to pull myself out of my grunge state lol. So this should be cool. And I'm done rambling lol.

Well the good news is I didn't gain any weight!

01/26/2005:* 239

Hiram - that's cool... you don't always loose weight every week... so, keep up the good work... you can do it...* ;D *hugs* &* :-*

wish I could too, Hiram... but sadly I can't... but I'm gonna miss the LA party and your b-day... and that's a bummer... :(

Diablita, Take heart. You are not the only one who had an itty bitt step back.

1/5/05 - Weight: 145
1/12/05 - Weight: 142.8
1/19/05 - Weight 142.8
1/26/05 - Weight 143.5

I'm not too upset though. I was on a retreat this weekend. Not only did I not get to work out, but they served buffet style High Calories foods. Even when you don't fill you plate you are getting way more calories that you wanted. I did count it as a success that I managed to drink lots of water despite the availability of all sorts of temptin sodas, and I even managed to avoid pigging out on the readily available chocolate goodies.

Also, although I dion't have the measurements with me, I am happy to report that my waist, hips, and thighs are smaller by a smidge, and I managed to fit in a pair of capris that I had given up on in the fall. They were still a bit tight, but by golly, they didn't hurt! ;D

So little victories all around

Hiram

Way to go everybody!* We seem to be missing a few this week.

Next week will be the one month mark!* We can do the measurements thing then.
I don't expect a big change in one month unless we have been combining some
good aerobic (walking, cycling, swimming, Poloar Bear Clubing, whatever) exercise
with watching the food intake!

But we'll give it a look. If it doesn't show worthwhile can in one month than we'll do it
every two or three months!* The main thing is, you know if your cloths fit better, and
if you can climb those stairs easier!

Ummm lol totally not gonna put my weight on here. But I will tell ya I've lost about 10 pounds since starting the G.L.O.W. So yayy for me. And Yayyyy to all of you who are losing. Heck even YAYYYY's for all of those who are trying to lose. It takes a lot of commitment to go through a lifestyle change. ;D

02-02-2005, 12:14 PM
Yeah Tari and Dia!!!

I believe Hiram said this week was measurement check in for those keeping track, so I'm goin to add that too.

First off, the weight tracking:

1/5/05 - Weight: 145
1/12/05 - Weight: 142.8
1/19/05 - Weight 142.8
1/26/05 - Weight 143.5
2/2/05 - Weight 143

Doin good there so Yeah!

But now for the real ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D part. (I was literally jumping around last night.)

At the first "weigh in" (or "measure in" as the case may be) on 1/5/05, I measured the following:

Measurements:

Neck: 12 1/4"
Bust: 34"
Waist: 30"
Hips: 40" (I added this because this is my biggest problem area and wanted to track it)
Mid Thigh: 20 1/2"
Calf: 15"

The measurements for 2/2/05 are:

Neck: 12 1/4"
Bust: 34"
Waist: 28 3/4" ;D
Hips: 39" ;D
Mid Thigh: 19 1/2" ;D
Calf: 13 3/4" ;D

So, how am I feeling?

:jump:

Full On!, ditto, and what she said!, or something!

Here is my report for this Wednesday, LOST and Alias DAY Number 5, 2005 ( February 3, 2005 )

Initial Weight :
01/04/2005:* 244
01/11/2005:* 242* -2
01/19/2005:* 239* -3
01/26/2005:* 239
02/03/2005* *237* -2

Total weight change: - 7 pounds* -2 pounds this week!* WoOt!!!.

Beginning Measurements:
01/04/2005:* *5' 10",* 244 pounds,* 47" chest,* 49"* * BB waist,*435/8* waist at belt line,*18 3/4 neck,*241/2 mid thigh,*17" mid calf
02/03/2005:* *5'10",* *237 pounds,* 47" chest,* 463/4 BB Waist, 431/4 waist at belt line,* 183/4 neck, 241/4 mid thigh, 163/4 mid calf

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * -7 pounds,* * * ** * * * * * * -21/4 inches,* * -3/8 inches,* * * ** * * * * * * * * ** * ** ** * - 1/4 inch * ** * *- 1/4 inch
How do I feel?
Happy, and successful considering that I have only changed half of the habits I need to in order to make my goals a quick and long term reality.* I am exercising though not enough days per week.* And my eating self-control is still out of control.* I got hit by the Charity Kryspy Kreme Donut people this week and of course I had to buy a dozen.* My freezer went on the blink so I was forced to cook all the Charity bought Cookie Dough Chocolate Chunk cookies at one time in order to "save them."* Of course they were gone in about three days!

So, I'm happy that I have LOST 7 pounds in this last month, but, I realize I have room for much improvement!
I'd still like to lose 25 pounds by:

"The Destination L.A. 'My Birthday' ,I Wish you could take me to Italy instead, dia, Party!"

Wowee! I think it has been two weeks since I was last able to track me progress.

1/5/05 - Weight: 145
1/12/05 - Weight: 142.8
1/19/05 - Weight 142.8
1/26/05 - Weight 143.5
2/2/05 - Weight 143
2/9/05 - Weight 141.5
3/2/05 - Weight 142

Nornally, I'd be somewhat disconcerted, but considering that illness and an out of town memorial service reduced my workouts to almost nil in the last two weeks staying steady isn't bad. Besides despite the weight remaining steady, I now need a belt for a couple pairs of pants, and I got a "YOWZA, your looking fantastic" from my hubby. Oh, and I can now jog 2.5 miles without having to stop.

So, not doing so bad really.

Congrats Hiram! You are doing amazingly well.

welshmuse
03-02-2005, 02:25 PM
Sorry I missed last week--I was out of town for a few days and forgot to post when I got back.

Anyway, here is my update:

2/9/05: 152.5
2/16/05: 151.1 (-1.4)
3/02/05: 149.3 (-1.8 lbs)
Total lost: 3.2 lbs (plus whatever I lost the two weeks that I dieted before weighing myself!)
Goal: 130

I'm pretty psyched to be below 150!

Oh, and I can now jog 2.5 miles without having to stop.

I saw that our little group dropped to the third page, and figured that we all must be getting very busy, and possibly a bit discouraged and/or frustrated. Sorry I'm so late with this. Couldn't get to a scale until last night.

First off......
CONGRATS TO HIRAM!!
You are doing Awesome!

Now to my check in

1/5/05 - Weight: 145
1/12/05 - Weight: 142.8
1/19/05 - Weight 142.8
1/26/05 - Weight 143.5
2/2/05 - Weight 143
2/9/05 - Weight 141.5
3/2/05 - Weight 142
3/9/05 - Weight 142

Staying relatively steady. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! I know I much focus on the fact that I'm steady. I also must focus on the fact that while the weight is staying maddeningly in the same place, the inches are shrinking. My waist is slimmer (I'm beginning to notice it in my pants), my hips and thighs are more toned, and I will probably be able to do a slow 5K race by April.

Still Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hiram
03-11-2005, 07:12 PM
Nance that's great!* You'are absolutely right. It isn't all about the weight. That is just one reference number.
Things like the measurements tell the tail.* Like how different you look.* You are obviously exchanging
muscle mass, which is twice as dense as fat, for fat.* If you imagine a half gallon carton of milk and a gallon
of milk.* The half gallon is muscle and the gallon is fat.* Then, imagine they weigh the same! That is why your
clothes are fitting better.* Not because your weight is down, but because your body is changing!

You go girl!!!

3/2/05 - Weight 142
3/9/05 - Weight 142

welshmuse
03-16-2005, 04:32 PM
That's great Nanse! At this point I can't even imagine running that far!

I think the reason I've been losing at a fairly steady rate so far is that I have a lot of fat to lose, and I haven't worked out in a long time so I don't have a lot of muscle tone. Building muscle makes a huge difference in the numbers--you can have two people who are the same height and weigh the same but look completely different--it's all about body fat %.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say (not very articulately) is don't stress about the numbers--you're obviously getting into great shape, and that's what counts! :)

Thanks! That is what I keep telling myself. Sometimes the number get you down though. I'm looking forward to the measure in coming up. I have to say that watching the measurements shrik certainly makes up for the weight disappointments.

There you go Nanse! Total weight is too often the only thing people look at to determine their success or failure.
I watched a show on the Discovery channel last night called something like "Celebrity Weight Loss Challenge."
One of the tests the consulting Doctor did was a simple electric impedence test. This calculates the pounds of
fat lost and pounds of muscle gained.

Thanks again Hriam for the invite.

since I really got "serious" about my weight last April I have lost 45 pounds. My issue is cravings and energy to exercise everyday. Starting tomorrow I start my full slim fast, fruits, vegetables, and yogurt diet and see if I can loose some weight. I have to make for two months worth. EEK!! I too was naughty over Easter. Stinking Holiday's. hehe!!

Good Luck to everyone!! ;)

I'm thrilled! I held steady even after the great Chocolate Feast of Easter 2005. Yippee. Not to mention I'm at a total of a 5 pound loss, and yesterday I realized that I desperately needed a belt for my new capri pants.

Great Job Hiram! Holding steady after a holiday (A Holiday where chocolate is everywhere in some of its' most tantalizing forms) is absolutely awesome!

Measurement week, Right? Let's start with the basics first, though. For my weight this week it's the same old same old. The pounds are coming off at an agonizingly slow pace, but they are coming off I'm down 5 pounds total:

1/5/05 - Weight: 145
1/12/05 - Weight: 142.8
1/19/05 - Weight 142.8
1/26/05 - Weight 143.5
2/2/05 - Weight 143
2/9/05 - Weight 141.5
3/2/05 - Weight 142
3/9/05 - Weight 142
3/16/05 - Weight 142
3/23/05 - Weight 140
3/30/05 - Weight 140
4/6/05 - Weight 140

But check this out. Apparently my muscle to fat ratio has been switching around wonderfully. This has got to be the the reason for me haveing the measurement success below, but not loosing the pounds I had hoped.

Measurements:

Original:
Neck: 12 1/4"
Bust: 34"
Waist: 30"
Hips: 40"
Mid Thigh: 20 1/2"
Calf: 15"

2/2/05:
Neck: 12 1/4"
Bust: 34"
Waist: 28 3/4"
Hips: 39"
Mid Thigh: 19 1/2"
Calf: 13 3/4"

4/6/05
Neck: 12 1/4"
Bust: 34"
Waist: 27 1/2"
Hips: 38 1/4"
Mid Thigh: 19"
Calf: 13 1/2"

I have to say, I'm liking measurement weeks. ;D

Just curious, is it too late to join in? I just discovered this thread and I've been wanting to lose some weight for a while now. How long are you guys going to continue with this? Because if you're winding down because of the finale approaching, then it would seem kinda silly for me to join in now, wouldn't it?

Welcome orangepolarbear to the G>L>O>W> !

No, people can join in at anytime. This is an on going Support Group.
If someone reaches their goal then they of course will still be an encourager to the rest of us,
and the new folks coming on board.

At the end of each Season we will have some kind of "Who LOST The Most Weight Winner" or
"Who LOST The Greatest Percentage of Their Goal Winner". Just for kind of a fun challenge.

Just check out the first post on this thread for what to Post and when.
Since it will be your First Post, go ahead and include your measurements.

We Post on each LOST Day, Wednesday. Some of us tend to procrastinate or forget to post on time
because we get all wrapped up in the episodes. But it is best to weigh in as soon as you get up in the morning anyway!

If you have any questions, just post them here and someone will help you.

Glenn

I actually have some good news to share--I start a new job tomorrow and went shopping this weekend for work clothes. I am happy to report that I am officially a size 8 for the first time since high school! (I graduated almost 8 years ago).

Welcome new GLOWers and way to go Hiram and welshmuse. Hiram, you are just doing marvelously, and welshmuse, isn't the clothes confirmation the best. The scale is one thing, but fitting into that smaller size is one of the best rewards

1/5/05 - Weight: 145
1/12/05 - Weight: 142.8
1/19/05 - Weight 142.8
1/26/05 - Weight 143.5
2/2/05 - Weight 143
2/9/05 - Weight 141.5
3/2/05 - Weight 142
3/9/05 - Weight 142
3/16/05 - Weight 142
3/23/05 - Weight 140
3/30/05 - Weight 140
4/6/05 - Weight 140
4/13/05 - Weight 140

Weight wise, I'm same old same old, but not really worrying about it. Although I did dip slightly below 140 for a joyous moment. Alas, it was not to last (of course it was only 139.6 so one decent healthy meal blasted that away).

Please wish me luck. I am running my first post GLOW 5k on Saturday. I did run a 5K back in Sept, thought I was going to die ;D. I fell off the workout wagon shortly thereafter, so this really feels like my first. I'm not looking to be particularly competetive (I'm still pretty slow), but would love any good vibes to help me beat my last best time of 31:38.

Thanks for encouragement guys!

Here's my numbers for this week:

2/9/05: 152.5
2/16/05: 151.1 (-1.4)
3/02/05: 149.3 (-1.8 lbs)
3/09/05: 147.4 (-1.9 lbs)
3/16/05: 146.1 (-1.3 lbs)
3/23/05: 144.7 (-1.4 lbs)
3/30/05: 145.4 (+0.7 lbs)
4/06/05: 144.6 (-0.8 lbs)
4/13/05: 144.6
Total lost: 7.9 lbs (plus whatever I lost the two weeks that I dieted before weighing myself!)
Goal: 130

I seem to have hit a bit of a plateau--I guess it's time to kick-up the workouts.

Good luck on the 5K Nanse--that's a great accomplishment.

Oh well, even though I didn't lose any this week, I'm still thrilled about going down a size! Still have a long way to go toward my goal, though.

Hiram I'll post pics eventually--when I figure out how to do it. :) Congrats on making it past the plateau!!!

Well, timewise I was disappointed. I actually went alightly slower than before.

However, I ended strong. I didn't feel like I would keel over and die. Actually, I could have gone a bit longer. I was somewhere in the middle of the field, so although there were plenty ahead of me, there were a good number behind me as well. Also, once I settled into a pace, none of the people I passed passed me, so a couple minor victories there.

I'm now energized to improve my speed. I must break 30 minutes on my next race.

All in favor of adding rathrbLOSTwithDOM to the G>L>O>W> support group:

say 3500 calories = a pound!

All opposed, must tell what they ate for the last two days! All of it!

Fantastic Job Hiram!!! Down 3 in one week and a total of 14. Wow!!

I'll have my official check in tomorrow. I don't have access to a scale until tonight.

Oh, thank you! I shall get my measurements from Curves, since they took all that info down for me. And, thankfully I have a scale here at home to check myself, even if they do weigh and measure you weekly at Curves. Do we keep a daily journal of the foods we've eaten?

Nah, I was justa' joshin' about that, unless you want to of course.

Seriously, I understand that if you do keep a journal of what you eat for the first few weeks of your
change in eating habits, it will be a real eye opener.

Notice I didn't say diet. I try to avoid that word because it implies a temporary change in eating.
This has to be a life change.

Gosh, I sound like one of those TV Infomercial Gurus!

You should put that in your sig line! :lol2: Well, I know I have to get serious about this, cuz I gained too much weight after I quit smoking. I went from being 200 lbs and losing to gaining 70 lbs! I'm too short for all that weight! My knees have been killing me and I have absolutely no energy anymore. I am definitely not happy with myself! I've even stopped going out with my friends cuz I'm just SOOO uncomfortable with the way I am.
I'm glad this group is around. I'm gonna need all the support I can get.

I know exactly how you feel, really! Usually I hate it when someone says "I know exactly how you feel, but I really can relate!
When I turned 29 for the, ah, after a few times, I suddenly gained about forty pounds in one year.
I had run my fourth marathon just the year before! I had taken some time of from regular exercise
after that last marathon, and when I tried to get back into running, my knees literaly could not handle
the extra weight!

Then about eight months ago in a freak accident I tore a ligament in my left knee. After the orthrascopic
surgery it hasn't been the same. Untill I lose the weight I know I won't be able to do any load bearing exercise.
So, I do Karate which doesn't involve any real high impact on my legs. And I ride my bike.

Also, of course I have changed my eating habits. I started this group, because I know I do better when I have
partners to encourage me. So welcome, and I hope you will enjoy your experience!

I'm sure I will have a good experience here. I just love this entire board. The Fuselage really is a great environment.

I've managed to injure both of my knees over the years. First time in high school, when I literally landed on top of it while attempting an 'air split'. The second time was about 2 years ago, the opposite knee. I tripped over some junk on the floor at work, and because I was trying to protect the old injury, I landed on the other one and injured that one for good.

Double Ouch!

Oh, I just noticed you're not far from Premium Economy! Well, not very far.

Here are the levels you can achieve. Caveat: Posts in Games do not count towards your Total Post Count!

1. On the Tarmac ( 0 to 29 posts ) . . . . . . . . . 1 small Yellow Star . . . . .Look out for planes!
2. Baggage ( entered at 30 posts ). . . . . . . . . .2 small Yellow Stars . . . .You are now on the plane!

9. Co-Pilot ( entered at ???? ) . . . . . . No one has ever made it this far!

Some of us enjoy playing the Race to Pilot Game for lack of a better name. But with over 10,000 Topics
in the Threaded Board there is much for you to do without ever getting bored, or is that boared!
We don't really know what will happen to the first person who gets to the Pilot's seat. Well, that's not entirely
true. The Pilot of Oceanic Flight 815 ( Greg Gunberg ) got killed by the "Monster"! But, here maybe the winner
will get something, who knows!

Have fun, and we’ll see ya on the threads!

Sorry for the late post. I didn't get a scale until yesterday. But yes. I lost one pound. I know it's not much, but I am very proud of myself.

I know exactly how you feel, really! Usually I hate it when someone says "I know exactly how you feel, but I really can relate!

I kind of know how you feel. Last year, I was in the best shape I've ever been. I was down to 110 pounds, and my muscle to fat ratio was great. It's all because, I'd been training for a whole year for my Tae Kwon Do. We went to Korea to compete in the World Championships. (By us...I mean the team from USA.) That was great, I mean...we were celebrities there! But then I came home, and we took a break from training. And just like that I gained 15 pounds. We're going to Australia in 2007, but I don't want to rely on heavy training to get me back to what I was. I want to get myself into a notch, where I am excerisizing, and eating better. :)

That is way too cool!* I'm a karateka myself. I take Okinawan Seibukan Karate!* The Original Karate-Do!
I hope to make it to Okinawa this year!
My specialties are Karate Kata and Kobudo ( bo ) Kata.* We do sparing in my dojo but not for competition.

As you said the Martial Arts Practice alone will not drop the pounds quickly.
You've got to add aerobics and dietary changes, IMHO.

Sorry for the VERY late post. Senioritis and craziness at school and I completely forgot to weigh in until today!

4-13-05: 238
4-23-05: 235 -3

This confuzzles me, as I have no idea how I could lose 3 pounds in a little over a week. Granted, I'm eating less and trying to eat better, but that just seems like a lot. I'm wondering if I maybe read my scale wrong the first day.

Hiram
04-25-2005, 02:50 PM
orangepolarbear,

It isn't that unusual to lose two or three pounds in a week, especially in the first week of trying to lose.
The bad news is that some of it is proly water. But, again it is expected. One thing that changes as
people improve their eating habits is they tend to eat a lower sodium diet by default. Sodium causes
your body to hold on to fluid. So if you had a higher daily intake of it than now, your body will begin to
lose some of that excess fluid, which is a good thing. Excess fluid makes extra work on your bodies
systems.

Of course, I'm not a Doctor, just play one on the internet!

I just want to say that I am so proud of all of you for trying so hard! It is a very difficult thing to do, losing weight! Trust me...*gag*(I can't believe I am telling this :fear3:---It motivation) 2 years ago I weighed in at 160 lbs and only 5 feet tall. I was getting into size 13's and seriously getting sick of myself. Now I am about 118, still at 5 feet tall, and my jean size varies from 1-5's depending on the brand. I still have some SKIN to shed, but the fact that I have lost about 45 lbs and am smaller now than I was when I graduated high school is a big deal to me.

So keep it up and if you want more motivation, I will be back to congratulate you all!

Since Hiram reminded me.......

I don't have any of my really "fat" pics available (scanned, etc) due to the fact that I purposefully online use the ones where I look semi-nonfat....so, the Llama Llama Duck shirt pic is the "fattest" one I have right now to post....maybe more can be found and uploaded later...but, here's the pics:

http://photobucket.com/albums/y199/kaidysoft/

before pic on right....pic from DLA on right, and I was about 75% where I wanted to be for DLA...I have since lost a few more pounds, but I don't own a scale and I don't weigh myself....I go by how my clothes fit.* All the pants I bought around Christmas (cause my others were too small) are now so big that I must wear a belt with some , and others are too big to look nice and they have been put in a box for "pregnancy time" later (hopefully not fat pants again...lol)

I know I was up to a size 20 (misses, not womens) and now I am in a 14-16, depending on the clothes...still would like to be a 11-13 again....don't mind my curves, just the buldges!

I was doing quite well diet wise before LA and semi-well on the exercise...now, I have been exercising a bit more, but the diet? Well, I don't CRAVE things like I used to, but I have been more "bad" than I wanted to.* But I do notice my eating habits have changed alot, and for the good.

I have been watching yall's progression eventhough I haven't been posting...CONGRATS, GOOD JOB, and we are the HOTTEST FANDOM out there! I swear! lol

I need to post some before and after pics. When I find a scanner. hehe!! But I have relost the five pounds I gained back but I have been sick and haven't eaten much or worked out so I don't know if I have lost anymore. I also haven't weighed myself for a while.

Bri- I can't look at your pics or at kaidysoft's either at work. I will need to look at them at home but I bet you both, as well as everyone else, look great!!

Hi Hiram! I can't pull up myself! You posted the wrong link or something!

And I thought you knew what you were doing! ;)

Nanse
05-04-2005, 04:32 PM
I don't have any before pics that pould work (I don't think) Besides, I think most of my progress is better scene with the tradition bathing suit shot (Not much clothes to hinder the view), and I certainly don't have that.

But I do have measurements. This is the first week of May afterall. It is measurement day right?

So here we go:

Measurements:

Original:
Neck: 12 1/4", Bust: 34", Waist: 30", Hips: 40" , Mid Thigh: 20 1/2", Calf: 15"

2/2/05:
Neck: 12 1/4", Bust: 34", Waist: 28 3/4", Hips: 39", Mid Thigh: 19 1/2", Calf: 13 3/4"

4/6/05
Neck: 12 1/4", Bust: 34", Waist: 27 1/2", Hips: 38 1/4", Mid Thigh: 19", Calf: 13 1/2"

5/4/05
Neck: 12 1/4"
Bust: 34"
Waist: 27 1/8"
Hips: 38 1/4"
Mid Thigh: 19"
Calf: 13 1/2"

So, I crept down in the waist. Not to shabby.

My weight:

1/5/05 - Weight: 145
1/12/05 - Weight: 142.8
1/19/05 - Weight 142.8
1/26/05 - Weight 143.5
2/2/05 - Weight 143
2/9/05 - Weight 141.5
3/2/05 - Weight 142
3/9/05 - Weight 142
3/16/05 - Weight 142
3/23/05 - Weight 140
3/30/05 - Weight 140
4/6/05 - Weight 140
4/13/05 - Weight 140
4/20/05 - Weight 141.6
4/27/05 - Weight 139.8
5/4/05 - Weight 139.6 (only down .2, but I'll take whatever little bit I can, especially if it puts me under 140)

How am I feeling? Generally motivated, Happy that I'm getting results, but a little frustrated with the weight. I was hoping to see more progress there, but weight isn't everything.

While ideally, I'd like to reach my early college weight (127), I have slightly revised my expectations. I am actually well within the healthy range for my height already. I want to be more toned, and fit. The weight falls more into the realm of vanity pounds. Given that I am within the healthy range, I think it's harder for me to lose weight. So I'm still aiming for 127, but would be satisfied for 130-135. Here's hoping.

GREAT JOB EVERYONE AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Hiram
05-05-2005, 04:37 PM
Absolutely right Roni1 and rathrb,
* * *The dietitians and/or Nutritionists will tell you that loosing more than about 1 to 11/2 pounds per week, on average, is not
going to be fat loss!* You will be loosing muscle, carbohydrates and fluid.* That is what gives you that feeling of weakness so
often associated with these "diets"!* Your muscles heal, during rest and sleep, by using your protein intake.* Some carbohydrate
must be present for your daily energy needs.* But, your body can only store about 3 days worth of carbs.* Fluid is obviously
necessary to avoid dehydration.* It is difficult for your body to burn fat alone.* It needs a small amount of carbohydrate burning too!
* * *This is what a balanced diet is all about:* A good bit of carbs, about a palm size of protein ( 3-4 oz), less than 30 grams of
total fat, less than 10 grams of saturated fat (solid at room temperature), very little to no trans fat (margarine, read food labels),
and 8 x 8 oz glasses of non-caffeine drinks per day.

I am rambling again!

Total weight change: - 15 pounds! WoOT and a HoOT!* * LOST no total weight this week.

Well once again we didn't have much to talk about on LOST.* *
So* I kept at my daily exercise plan: aerobics, Karate(low impact), good nutrition.
Next week may be more of a challenge because we now have "The Greater Good"
eppy to pick apart!

Sorry, guys! I've gotten into this bad habit of forgetting to weigh in...school year winding down and all is driving me insane. This week's excuse: It's prom week...and on Wednesday I was getting so excited about the Lost party I was having I could barely think. And all week I've been training my girls for field commander auditions and they finally had those on Friday (Cristen got it, just like I knew she would). Okay, enough of my pitiful excuses.

4-23-05: 235 -3
5-7-05: 235

On the bright side, I didn't gain any more weight. I discovered the beauty of my school's baked potatos and Oriental Chicken Spring Salads (both surprisingly good, considering the rest of the crap that my school serves).

I never saw this on the board before. When it is over?

Actually, Tarrish you may join at anytime, and it is never over!

The fact is, this is more of a support group than a Contest per say!

See the very first post in this thread for details and instructions,
then come on back here and make your first weigh in. Usually the
first weigh in include measurements although they are by no means
a requirement! The "Rules" are more "Guidelines" than anything else.

LOST Days are weigh-in days!

Enjoy!

Well I haven't weighed in, since I joined, I have walked three miles every other day! And yesterday, I made three miles in 32 minutes!

No weight loss for me today. I'm still at 124. But I feel so much better. I feel stronger, and so much positive. That must count for something.
