Let the new theories come!
I think that the reason why the Light of the Island needed to be kept on at all costs is because it holds the entrance to Heaven. It fuels what allows people to cross over to this 'place'. That is the same light that started to shine beyond the Church's doors. It is also the same light that Near Death Experiences talk about. The Light at the End of the Tunnel
Without that Light on, on the island, dead people can't go to heaven and they are always stuck either on the island itself or in this purgatory-like collective reality.
That is why it was so important not to let the island sink. Perhaps nothing would have happened to the world as a whole, but without the Light shining, there wouldn't be a way for souls to go towards the Light. In other words, there wouldn't be a TUNNEL to reach Heaven.
The reason why Nameless became the Smoke Monster when he came into contact with it could be because you have to be dead first to touch the Light.
Nameless wasn't dead because Jacob couldn't kill him. So he was still alive when he approached the entrance to Heaven. So he was automatically rejected and ripped from his physical body, perhaps even punished by higher beings, becoming the Smoke Monster.
Desmond is a special case because, well, he was unique. He could resist the EM of the Light preventing him from reaching the same fate as Nameless.
The Island could also be the place where ALL souls go to after people die. Once there, and depending on the way they lived their lives, they are allowed to walk into the Light or
become stuck on the island as whisperers just like Michael.
Remember Richard's wife? She died off the island but she was still there.
Perhaps some ghosts are even 'allowed' to cross back into the Island through the Light to 'help' other people in certain special cases.
