Knowing everything we know now, can anyone tell me why Ben said this? It seems the whispers and the MIB are completely separate things and the whispers don't seem to be bad (or have any motives at all) really.

I mean Im willing to accept that they didnt have it all planned out from the beginning but this was just last season.

I can come up with two plausible reasons.

1.Ben as the unreliable narrarator, which many of our characters turned out to be.

2.Bad things did seem to happen through the years when the whispers showed up. I imagine the whispers got quite bored and so when drama broke or was about to, they would show up to watch.

Both very valid possibilities. I'm sold! Especially on the latter...even ties in with what the whispers transcripts supposedly heard: that the ghosts were often watching and commenting quite casually on the events before them.

Instead of the way the whispers were explained (lame expedition by Michael) wouldn't it be nice if Hurley just wandered into new otherton, or by a group of others, and witnessed all of the dead dharma folk following the others around and whispering. This would have given a clearer explanation of the whispers, maintained the continuity of all scenes involving the whispers (including the one mentioned), and avoided clunky exposition. I found the explanation they gave satisfactory, but the execution quite poor.
