My conclusion on the series and the finale, and some speculation.
The mythology:
The island is a vital part of this planet, the light is the heart, not only of the island, but of the world. Thats why is so important to protect the island: "The greater good". (more on this later)
Jacob & the other protectors set rules.
Jacob makes a big mistake, creating the Smoke Monster, after that, he needs not only to protect the Island, but to deal with Smokie. He starts to bring people to the island, trying to defeat Smokie and find a candidate.
MiB thinks that all the people is corruptible, bad, Jacob thinks the opposite, and wants to prove MiB wrong.
A lot of people come to the island, between Jacob & MiBīs "game": Black Rock, Dharma,, and a lot before them.
Finally, Jacob brought to the island the correct people, people who will sacrifice themselves for the "greater good" (his friends, family, life...) These people are the Losties.

Lost story:
The series story, is, basically, the story and development/redemption of the characters (Jack,Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, etc) in this place.

Flash Sideway:
Some kind of "purgatory", in Lost, one person lives and passes to the next "level" with his "soul mates", not alone. In this "purgatory" thereīs no time. When all the soul mates are ready, the awakening begins. Some people we see in the FS are not real (Jackīs son, David, for example), they are part of the subconscious creation (like in our dreams)
Jack was wrong about "Live together, die alone".

More about the island (theory, speculation):
Island events are the source of all mythologies and religions in the world. The island always has existed. The Hindus, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, etc, have come to the island and have made their own interpretations.
Now we can make our own.

Jack was wrong about "Live together, die alone".

"if we cant live together, were gonna die alone".

I think he was exactly right. They needed eachother, if they didnt have one another they would have been alone in death.

i love this.
lately people have been going on about the smallest stuff.
at first i was dissapointed about the lack of island answers, but after "Across The Sea" i basically reconciled that there would be no island answers. Once I got over that I was able to enjoy the end of this show. I think the writers want us to share our theories and I mostly agree with your theory. Still it was unfair to bring up so many questions without giving answers. If the writers weren't going to answer, at least give us an indication of some of the mysteries to make more well rounded theories afterwards. I still don't get how they got the wheel to work, or what the smoke monster really was, etc. (there are so many). But i guess that is life, things happen and you never really know.

I think you gave a simple well rounded summary.

I believe Jack's son was real also. Christian even states at the end. "I'm real, your real, everything that's ever happened to you is real". That statement alone tells me his son was real. And if Jack's subconscious created him how did Juliet interact with him?

Unless we are to believe the FS was not real. But if that's the case, how could Desmond's conscious travel there from island time.

I thought the FS wan not real. Just a place they created while they waited for everyone to be ready. Am I messed up on this?

No Rocker I am with you. The F/S was kind of like purgatory...it wasn't real, it was just a place for them to wait and for each other to let go so they could move on together. Coming to the island linked them to each other for eternity.
As for the son, he obviously wasn't real, although I'm not sure how to exactly sum up his presence in the F/S.

"if we cant live together, were gonna die alone".

I think he was exactly right. They needed eachother, if they didnt have one another they would have been alone in death.

But except for Vincent, Jack did die alone.

You are right, if I rethink that quote, Jack was right.

And I consider Vincent a really good partner.

About David, well, I wrote in the original post what I think, I think he isn't real, obviously that Juliet can see him! David (and the other "not real people") are a creation for give "structure" to this "purgatory".

Thank you for this!! It makes me feel so much better about everything in the finale. I had similar thoughts myself after seeing those stained glass window panels in the Church scene, but I thought I was just being crazy and reaching.

Most people seem to have a very strict interpretation of the religious aspect (most say it's purely Catholic), but I really think yours is the most meaningful and true to the show.

It's like that age old question "what's the meaning of life?" LOST seems to throw that question back at you saying, "well, what does life mean to YOU?" That's pretty awe-inspiring.

Thanks! I really love this interpretation.
I was raised as a Catholic, Im a "Catholic", I went 14 years to a Catholic School, and for me, the "religious" aspect isn't purely Catholic at all.

That we were left to make our own conclusions about the nature of the island and find our own solutions to the hundreds of mysteries is a crying shame. More than a month has passed since the finale and people are still trying to figure out what the h#*l happened.

Hundreds of mysteries unexplained? Really? Can you tell me just 30 mysteries that have gone unexplained?

If people are still trying to figure out what happened, then i'd have to say they weren't paying very close attention.

AMAZING!!!! Take a look at the unanswered questions thread. There's a couple hundred unanswered questions for you. Unfortunately I was paying too close attention. I should have been enjoying the growth and development of the characters.

(Here is my list)

Why was Oceanic flight numbered 815?
Why was Ajira flight numbered 316?
Why was Claire's hair blonde?
Why were the trees closer to the water on the second beach as opposed to the first?
Why was Locke going bald?
Why were there 6 seasons of Lost?
Why were there so many tarps on the plane?
Why was the computer in the hatch placed in the middle of the floor and not agains the wall?
Why did Boone agree to climb up and get in the plane when any reasonable person would know the likely-hood of it falling was great?
Why was Vincent originally played by a female dog?
Why.....

Hopefully you see where I'm going here. Most of the questions on that thread were not "mysteries" raised by TPTB. They were simply questions that different users had about a series that had 100+ episodes. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to have the answers to the mysteries that were raised but not answered, and hopefully some day we will get the answers straight from the 'horse's mouth'. But I'm not going to sit here and claim that the show was ruined because there were so many things that were left unanswered. That's just not true.
