If anyone watched the HBO series Carnivale the character Lodz (the blind guy) would drink absinthe.
He would put a cube of sugar in a strainer and pour the stuff over it then drink. It may have been partially responsible for his blindness. It has caused deaths, hence it being banned. I have seen the strainer thing
before but don't know what the deal is with the sugar.

Anyone?

Just guessing, but perhaps something in the absinthe would bind with the sugar
either making it more powerful, or less deadly. Just a total guess.

Personally, the current drink I love is one I discovered on a recent trip to Brazil.
It's called Guarana'. The "active" ingredient is an extract from the Guarana' plant.
It apparently has properties similar to Ma Huang. Regardless, it tastes great and
gives one a nice little pick-me-up!
