View Full Version : Virtual reality

My current wild theory is that our lostaways are not on an island at all, but are in a virtual reality - maybe an experiment, but not sure about the experiment part. I thought of this after watching the finale with black puffs of smoke and mechanical-sounding monster. Once I started thinking about it, I liked the idea more and more. Thinking back to the beginning when the pilot was "taken", it kind of reminds me of a virtual reality like death. This wild theory also explains how all of our lostaways survived such a devastating crash - they didn't. This could explain all of the "unexplainable" things about the island - anything can happen in virtual world. OK, to take my wild theory further: Maybe Hurley is "bankrolling" the virtual reality experience - maybe a game. I suggest this because he has the resources & because he seems to be the only one on the island who is not traumatized by being there. Now, his whole "freak out" about the numbers seems to contradict this theory, but what if the numbers are embedded in the computer code of the virtual reality ":game" that he has set up -like a cheat code or something. Alrignt. I know this is a wild one, but I had to post it just in case I turn out to be right - I want bragging rights ;D

I did a search and did not find any reference to this type of theory, but I could be sadly mistaken & if so I apologize.

This as been denied by the writers already it is not a dream virtual reality or a hallucination. According to the writers that is...

i support your theory.. it also came to my mind that they are inside a game of virtual reality where they could choose to be the persons they are not in the real world. example is locke could walk, charlie would be drug free, sayid was the one being tortured instead of the torturer, jacks father is alive instead of being dead, etc

This has been my theory too. And if the writers have denied it, I'd like to see that quote too!

I think the plane crash wasn't real. Because the losties aren't even really on the island. They are all in some kind of rehab therapy virtual reality experiment somewhere. Their bodies/minds are connected to the "game" and they are just "playing out" all of this - like a virtual reality computer game. Similar to the movie "the 13th Floor." All in the same simulation. The plane crash was the opening scene in the simulation. They each are controlling their own "player" with their minds and emotions - thinking that it is real!

Example - Claire was "kidnapped" but can't remember what happened to her. Well...they took her out of the game so she could have the real baby. Then put her back in and she had the virtual Aaron.

As you said above, way too many odd things happen on the island that aren't realistic at all. The black smoke. The horse. Jack seeing his dad. The chicken. The polar bear. They don't make sense in the real world, but fit in a VR world just fine.

The flashbacks are the characters' real histories. Each of the losties that we've seen flashbacks for had serious issues in their lives. No one has just been on their way home from a vacation to Australia. They all have garbage from their past that they needed to work through. Their lives were out of control. They all needed a fresh start. They were lost before they even got to the island. This "therapy" is their chance to work all this out.

Not a popular theory, And I'm not suggesting it's what's really happening even. Just saying if I were writing the story, it would be my choice!

Wasn't "the chicken" in Hurley's dream and not part of any sort of reality?
