Do we know for sure that Jack is a spinal surgeon?
Or did we assume this because that is the surgery that he described to Kate in this epi?

I had wondered before how he was able to treat so many different types of ailments on the island.
I'm starting to wonder if he was not an ER doctor.

His father was called in to operate on a woman that had been in a car accident, when Jack stepped in. Certainly, this would be an ER situation.

Thanks to a comment WaltisFuture made in another thread, I realized a foreshadowing and a LEG item

Jack puts a tourniquet on the leg of the guy who got trapped by the debris, then Boone asks about it and Jack says he took the tourniquet off and that the guy will be fine.

This could be a foreshadowing of Boone's death.

TOTALLY. Plus, the whole tracheotomy thing. Boone's death was forshadowed from the very beginning!

Someone had mentioned that this was a guide for the monster. (or something to that effect) Well the first time the monster appears in the pilot you see a bird swoop by. (and hear it too)

Creme - do you have all of the number references from the Pilot now, or did you notice new ones in the 10 minutes you have recorded ;) or in the latest posts?

I don't know if I have them all, since I can't rewatch the episode.

I'm sure between all the contributors on this thread and whatever has been garnerned by the NUMBERS group we'll have it covered.

Some other observations:

The first time we see Kate she is rubbing her wrists, later we find out it was because of the handcuffs.

I can't take credit for this one, Kate watching Jack and his palm leaf airplane by the fire is possible forshadowing of Tom's little plane.

Edit: I've mentioned this elsewhere, but Jack's wound that Kate stiches up is very close to the same spot as Locke's kidney operation scar.

creme - the shadowy figure to the left of jack and kate is charlie. However, other posts have discussed the hooded figure to the right (you have to look real hard). Some people wonder if this is Ethan, others just think its a crew person caught by the camera.

i dont think it is crew.....they (TPTB)are better than that....plus why would a crew person just stand there all suspicious(spelling) and stuff---i hope it was ethan that would be sweet....but then we would start going thru every ep , every frame to see what else they have hidden on us.. :)

BOOZE:
Jack's drinking on the plane is featured prominently. The waitress asks him about his drink and he says, "It's not a very strong drink." She sneaks him a couple more little bottles of vodka, asking him to keep it secret. He pours one into his screwdriver, which is already nearly empty, and quickly downs it. He puts the other in his pocket. He looks at this bottle when he wakes up in the jungle, puts it back in his pocket, and later uses it to disinfect Kate's hand and his wound before she sews him up.

The conversation and actions between Jack and the flight attendant are striking because secrecy and hiding liquor are hallmarks of alcholism and/or behavior in an alcoholic family. Not necessarily an indicator that Jack, himself, is an alcoholic, but certainly a marker indicating that alcohol is an issue in his life.

Note also that we learn in EX1 that he was drinking at the airport, so he had at least 3-4 drinks before the plane went down. According to DSM-IV and other measurement instruments for alcoholism / alcohol abuse, 4 drinks for a man is classified as binge drinking and is one of the strongers indicators of an alcohol problem.

Wasn't he planning to have a drink with Ana-Lucia on the plane? He looks back toward the rear of the plane in the last Ex2 flashback, before he makes eye contact with Locke. Of course her drink of choice was Tequilla, not Vodka.

this i am unaware of, but would be a terrific thing if true. screen cap? i never saw it, i dont think there was a single bird until EX2

I think the 4 drinks would have to be in a smaller time period. *The drinks he had before the flight were probably at least 8 hours prior to the drinks that we see him have on the plane.

There is the comment, however, made by Kate to Sawyer when they're playing "I Never". *He says something to the effect that he found the drinks cart, and Kate says "Jack was looking for that!". *Was his intent to obtain alcohol for medical reasons or for leisure/entertainment?

Note also that we learn in EX1 that he was drinking at the airport, so he had at least 3-4 drinks before the plane went down. According to DSM-IV and other measurement instruments for alcoholism / alcohol abuse, 4 drinks for a man is classified as binge drinking and is one of the strongers indicators of an alcohol problem.
It could also be an indication of a man who doesn't normally drink, but is turning to drink because he does NOT want to deal with his father's funeral and the fallout, knowing he will be scapegoated by his family. I'm not a drinker by any stretch (you're lucky if I have a glass of wine every couple of months), but there have also been times where I just felt like having a bottle of scotch all to myself too. Maybe this was just one of those times for Jack.


I think the 4 drinks would have to be in a smaller time period.* The drinks he had before the flight were probably at least 8 hours prior to the drinks that we see him have on the plane.

The pilot says they were seven hours into the flight when the radio went out, and then they flew another 1000 miles off course, which at airplane speeds is what, another hour and a half to 2 hours? So, Jack had his "screwdriver" about 9 hours into the flight. Since it seems he arrived pretty early in the day (he was in line before Jin, and he was at the airport with enough time to sit around and read the paper), and the flight was at what... 2, I'd say at least 10-12 hours elapse between Ana Lucia and the screwdriver.

EDIT: Wikipedia list's the Boeing 777's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_777#General_characteristics) cruising speed at 550 mph, so the 1000 miles they'd flown off course would have taken about 110 minutes.


There is the comment, however, made by Kate to Sawyer when they're playing "I Never".* He says something to the effect that he found the drinks cart, and Kate says "Jack was looking for that!".* Was his intent to obtain alcohol for medical reasons or for leisure/entertainment?

Given that Jack has always gone above and beyond the call of duty for his patients, even to the point that he ended his father's career doing the right thing, I'd find it very out of character for Jack to be looking for the cart for anything but medical purposes.

Both of you are right, and I'd appreciate if you put those comments on the Jack/ Booze thread for consideration.

I was looking for a screen capture of the bird scene.

I can't seem to find one. I think it happens when all of them are on the beach. (Didn't the monster come during daylight?) I know that you hear the bird. Do you hear it in the other episodes leading up to Exodus? I think you don't hear birds at all in any of the other episodes.

I haven't followed the bird theories and sightings, but I know they are out there. I'll be paying more attention because the bird was very obvious in EX1.

A lot of people speculated that the hallucinatory "monster" that got Shannon was a bird like creature.

Logical explanation for "the Black Figure" - which will be added to Goofs:

Jack comes around the edge of the fuselage yelling for Hurley to move Claire. Next scene is shot of Hurley, Claire and Black Figure running away. If it is an extra or cast member then it was intended to be digitally edited out. If so it was done really poorly and the editor should be fired. No way is it intended to be someone from the plane trying to help and running away and they are blurry. Watch the scenes of Hurley and Claire prior to Jack's arrival and you will see that there is no one there with Claire and Hurley.

In HORS, Kate asks Jack about his tattoos because she says he doesn't seem like the type. He declines to speak about why, saying that it's personal and he has his reasons but does not wish to share them. (Thanks to DaisyJSD at the fuselage).

It wouldn't hurt to ask for a confirmation. I usually like to do that with translations, especially of Asian Characters since they can mean more than one thing.

It's his left hand, and since Sawyer/Josh Holloway is left-handed, it makes sense that he got it from punching something (or someone), and it's before he and Sayid had their fight.* So, I do believe this was from the barfight that got him deported.* ^_^

Boone is the only one I noticed that had a bruise before and after the flight, on his left cheek from his fight with Bryan. I think they've been pretty consistent with that one.

FWIW, I do think that people really believe in the miracle sightings around the world, and I do believe that miracles can happen around them. I don't understand why - that's one of the great mysteries.

I don't really believe that holy images have been subliminally planted anywhere in Lost, but it doesn't surprise me that people see them anyway. As pointed out, we humans have a tendency to anthropomorphize many images, and those who believe in mysticism may be more sensitive to sighting human (face-like) forms in unexepected place.
